Graveless is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 1.4.3. Not just another grave mod... Your ghost waits at your death site under a beacon of light, holding every item for a one-click restore to its original slot. Spirit Compass tracking, a 3D grave browser, mob protection, and no physical grave block to lose. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Graveless?

3 parts

Graveless is a death-recovery mod with no grave block. When you die, your items are kept at the spot where you fell, and a ghost of your character waits there until you come back for them. Because there is nothing to place, break or lose, the mod's own description says a grave cannot fail to spawn, fall into the void, get overwritten by your next death, or be destroyed.[1]

This pack ships Graveless 1.4.0 for NeoForge. It was already in the pack by FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2.[2]

Finding your grave

  • Your ghost wears your player skin and is visible only to you, plus anyone you grant access.[1]
  • A pillar of light marks the site from up to 256 blocks away, and a glowing outline shows through terrain.[1]
  • You get a Spirit Compass in your hand when you respawn. It points at your grave and disappears once you have nothing left to recover.[1]
  • Entering claim range puts a message in chat and on the action bar with the distance and compass direction.[1]

Claiming your items

Walk up and click the ghost, left or right click both work. Items go back to the exact slots they were in: hotbar layout, armor, offhand and Curios accessory slots. Your XP comes back too. If your inventory is partly full, whatever does not fit stays in the grave for a second trip, and nothing is dropped on the ground.[1]

While you approach your own grave, a Spirit Ward makes you invisible, stops mobs from targeting you and grants night vision, for up to two minutes or until you claim. Leaving the area removes it.[1]

The grave browser

Right click the Spirit Compass or run /graveless to open a screen listing every grave you have. It shows when and where you died, what killed you, the full item list, stored XP and current distance, plus a rotatable 3D preview of the terrain around the ghost. From there you can attune the compass to an older grave and manage who may see and claim your graves.[1]

By default the mod keeps up to 30 graves per player, and the setting is configurable. It also respects the keepInventory gamerule, and you can opt out for yourself with /graveless disable if you prefer vanilla drops.[1]

Tip: On a server, operators get extra tools in the same screen, such as restoring a grave to its owner from anywhere. Every death is also written to a backup file that is never deleted, and it can be revived with /graveless restorebackup.[1]

How do you get started with Graveless?

5 parts

There is nothing to craft before you start with Graveless. It handles what happens when you die, so the first steps are about knowing what to do after your first death. There is no grave block to place, break or lose. Your items are kept safe where you fell, and a ghost of your character waits there until you come back.[1]

Step 1: Get your Spirit Compass

When you respawn, a Spirit Compass is placed in your hand. It points at your grave and disappears once you have nothing left to recover. Hold it and follow the needle.[1][3]

Step 2: Follow the light

A pillar of light marks the site, and a glowing outline shows through terrain. In this pack the visibility radius is 256 blocks, so ghosts are sent to you and stay visible from far away (general.visibility_radius). Within about 32 blocks, a silver thread reaches from the ghost toward you. Entering claim range also puts a message in chat and on the action bar with the distance and compass direction.[1][4]

Step 3: Claim your items

Walk up and click the ghost, left or right. Your items go back to the exact slots they were in, including hotbar layout, armor and offhand, and your XP comes back too. If your inventory is partly full, whatever does not fit stays in the grave for a second trip. Nothing is dropped on the ground.[1]

The pack keeps the claim range at 16 blocks (general.claim_range). Line of sight is not required, so you can claim through walls (general.require_line_of_sight).[1][4]

Tip: Sneak and click the ghost instead to open the grave and take back only what you want. In that screen, sneak + left click on an item takes it into your inventory.[3]

The Spirit Ward helps you get there

While you approach your own grave, the Spirit Ward gives you invisibility and night vision, and mobs ignore you. It is enabled in this pack (protection.protection_enabled) and is granted within 256 blocks of your grave (protection.protection_range). If you do not claim the grave, it lasts 120 seconds (protection.protection_duration). After you claim, it lingers for 1 second (protection.protection_linger).[1][3][4]

The grave browser

Right click the Spirit Compass or run /graveless to open a screen listing every grave you have. It shows when and where you died, what killed you, the item list, stored XP and current distance, plus a rotatable 3D preview of the terrain around the ghost. From there you can attune the compass to an older grave and manage who may see and claim your graves. If you prefer vanilla drops, you can turn the mod off for yourself with /graveless disable or from that screen.[1]

Graveless death handling is switched on in this pack (general.enabled), which is the master switch for the whole mod.[4]

Watch out: The pack keeps up to 30 death records per player, and the oldest are dropped first (general.max_records_per_player). Backup files on disk are kept, and the pack keeps every backup forever (general.max_backups_per_player is -1). So if you die a lot between trips, claim your newest grave first.[1][4]

How does Graveless work?

6 parts

Graveless is a death-handling mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks or power to set up. When you die, your items are kept at the place you fell and a ghost of your character waits there until you come back. There is no grave block: nothing to place, break or lose.[1]

What happens when you die

Death records are stored server-side in world data, so a grave cannot fail to spawn, fall into the void or be overwritten by your next death. Items from other mods are captured too. The mod respects the keepInventory gamerule, and each player can opt out with /graveless disable or from the in-game screen.[1]

The whole system sits behind one master switch, general.enabled, which is set to true in this pack.[3][4]

Finding your grave

  • Your ghost wears your player skin and is visible only to you, plus anyone you grant access.[1]
  • A pillar of light marks the site from up to 256 blocks away, and a glowing outline shows through terrain.[1]
  • Within about 32 blocks, a silver thread reaches from the ghost toward you.[1]
  • Entering claim range puts a message in chat and on the action bar with the distance and compass direction.[1]
  • You get a Spirit Compass in your hand when you respawn. It points at your grave and disappears once you have nothing left to recover.[1][3]

How far away ghosts are sent to nearby players and stay visible is general.visibility_radius. The pack sets it to 256 blocks, the same as the mod default.[3][4]

Claiming your items

Walk up and click the ghost, left or right. Items return to the exact slots they were in when you died: hotbar layout, armor, offhand and Curios accessory slots. Your XP comes back too. If your inventory is partly full, whatever does not fit stays in the grave for a second trip, and nothing is dropped on the ground.[1]

If you only want some of the items, sneak and click the ghost to open the grave. In that menu, sneak and left click an entry to take it into your inventory.[3]

general.claim_range is the maximum distance from which a ghost can be claimed. The pack uses 16 blocks, the mod default, and the claim aim passes through blocks. general.require_line_of_sight is false in this pack, so claiming through walls works. If that option is turned on, an unobstructed view of the ghost is required.[3][4]

Spirit Ward

While you approach your own grave, the Spirit Ward effect makes you invisible, gives you night vision and stops mobs from targeting you. Leaving the area removes it.[1][3][4]

The grave browser

Right click the Spirit Compass or run /graveless to open a screen listing every grave you have. It shows when and where you died, what killed you, the full item list, stored XP, current distance and a rotatable 3D preview of the terrain around the ghost, captured at the moment you died so it works across dimensions.[1]

From there you can attune the compass to an older grave, manage who may see and claim your graves, and turn the mod off for yourself if you prefer vanilla drops. Access you have granted can be revoked with a click.[1][3]

Records and backups

general.max_records_per_player caps the death records kept per player. The pack uses 30, the mod default, and the oldest records are dropped first while their backup files stay on disk.[1][3][4]

general.max_backups_per_player caps the archived backup files per player. It is -1 in this pack, the mod default, which keeps every backup forever. With a positive limit, the oldest files are deleted once a new death pushes a player over it.[3][4]

Operators get extra tools in the same screen: browse any player's graves, preview contents, restore a grave to its owner from anywhere, pull out a single item, teleport to the site or delete an entry. Any backup can be revived as a live grave from the UI or with /graveless restorebackup, even after the original was claimed.[1]

Tip: Follow the Spirit Compass back to your grave. If your inventory is too full to take everything, the leftovers stay in the grave, so you can clear space and make a second trip.[1]

Which Graveless config options matter?

3 parts

Graveless (Graveless) keeps all its settings in config/graveless-server.toml. Good news: every option here that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack, so nothing has been retuned. Here is what each option does and how the pack has it.[4]

Claiming and visibility

  • general.claim_range is 16 blocks, the same as the mod default. It is the maximum distance from which you can claim a ghost, and the claim aim passes through blocks. The allowed range is 2 to 128.[4]
  • general.require_line_of_sight is false in this pack. That means you do not need an unobstructed line of sight to the ghost. If you turned it on, claims would stop working through walls.[4]
  • general.visibility_radius is 256 blocks, the same as the mod default. It is the distance at which grave ghosts are sent to nearby players and stay visible. The allowed range is 16 to 512.[4]

Spirit Ward

Spirit Ward is the buff you get when you approach your own grave. It gives invisibility and night vision, and mobs ignore you. These options control it.[4]

Records, backups and the master switch

  • general.max_records_per_player is 30, the same as the mod default. It caps the death records kept per player, and the oldest records are dropped first. Backup files on disk are kept. The allowed range is 1 to 1,000.[4]
  • general.max_backups_per_player is -1, the same as the mod default, which keeps every archived grave backup forever. If you set a positive limit, the oldest files are deleted once a new death pushes a player over it. The allowed range is -1 to 10,000.[4]
  • general.enabled is true. It is the master switch for Graveless death handling.[4]
Tip: Backups are never deleted by default (-1). If you want old backup files cleaned up, set a limit in general.max_backups_per_player.[4]

What changed in Graveless between versions?

4 parts

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Graveless 1.4.0. The mod was first included in FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog, newest first.[2]

1.4.0 (the version in this pack)

  • Added Armor Cosmetic support. Cosmetic armor now goes into the grave and returns to its original cosmetic slots when you claim it. If a slot is already filled, that piece goes to your main inventory instead.[5]
  • Before this, NeoForge restored cosmetic armor to the main inventory, and Fabric left it on the ground at the death spot.[5]
  • NeoForge now requires 26.1.2.78 or newer.[5]

1.3.x: fixes for lost items

  • 1.3.4: Fixed a grave's items and xp being lost when it was claimed just as the player died, for example clicking the ghost the moment a mob landed the killing blow. Claims, extractions and xp reclaims from a dead player are now ignored and the grave stays put.[5]
  • 1.3.4: Admin restores and /graveless restore now refuse while the target player is dead.[5]
  • 1.3.3: Fixed a death losing every item when the drop event never arrived, such as a disconnect or crash between dying and the grave being written. Pending items are now saved on respawn or logout instead of discarded.[5]
  • 1.3.2: Fixed the Spirit Compass blocking full inventory recovery and displacing restored items from their original slots, and fixed restore failures discarding items still waiting in a grave.[5]
  • 1.3.2: Fixed trusted players being unable to view and extract grave contents in the browser, and fixed through-wall claiming when the line of sight requirement is disabled.[5]
  • 1.3.2: Fixed Spirit Ward ending before its configured linger expires and removing existing potion effects.[5]
  • 1.3.1: Fixed clicking a ghost doing nothing, caused by a bad cooldown check that blocked every claim, sneak-to-open and extraction.[5]

1.3.0: browser controls

  • Sneak and click a ghost to open that grave in the browser instead of claiming it.[5]
  • Sneak + left click a slot in the browser to take back a single stack. Owners and granted players need to be in claim range, operators do not.[5]
  • Added a button to reclaim a grave's stored xp without the items.[5]

1.2.x: claiming and backups

  • 1.2.1: Fixed grave claiming often taking several clicks. Clicks now register with a block behind the ghost, and right-click claiming works while you hold an item.[5]
  • 1.2.1: Added a show_beam client setting to turn off the light beam above graves.[5]
  • 1.2.0: Added max_backups_per_player to cap the per-death backup files. It defaults to -1, which keeps every file.[5]
  • 1.2.0: Added /graveless prune player <player> [keep] and /graveless prune all [keep] to trim an existing archive. They fall back to the configured limit and refuse to run while retention is unlimited.[5]
