What is FrostBear?

FrostBear is part of the pack, which ships version 2.0.0 of it. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources here include no guidebook or description for FrostBear, so what the mod adds is not shown in this section. I would rather leave it out than guess.

How do you get started with FrostBear?

4 parts

FrostBear is a small mod, so getting started is a short list. It adds the FrostBear mob, a status effect called Frostbite, and three things you can craft. Here they are in the order I'd make them.[2][3]

Step one: Warming Stew

Start with Warming Stew. It restores 3 hunger icons and you can eat it even at full hunger. Eating it also removes 2 Frostbite stacks, which makes it your emergency answer to the mod's Frostbite effect.[3]

Make a few before you go looking for a FrostBear.

Step two: Frostfang

Next is Frostfang, the mod's weapon. It is crafted from a Glacial Core, which the mod describes as a frozen remnant of the FrostBear. The same core is also used to repair the weapon.[3]

Every hit inflicts Frostbite, and Frostbitten targets take 20% more damage. Using it erupts ice spikes along the frost markers.[3]

Step three: Frozen Heart Trophy

Frozen Heart Trophy is a block, and its tooltip calls it a keepsake from the frozen north. Craft it once you have something worth commemorating.[3]

The Frozen Heart

The Frozen Heart is a separate item that you consume. It gives you Heart of Winter for 2 minutes and Regeneration II for 10 seconds. While the effect is active, a 5-block aura adds Frostbite to visible hostile mobs every 2s. It blocks freezing and ordinary Frostbite, but boss frost still pierces it.[3]

Tip: Heart of Winter does not stop boss frost, so keep some Warming Stew on you even with the buff running. Each stew removes 2 Frostbite stacks.[3]

How does FrostBear work?

7 parts

FrostBear doesn't add machines, multiblocks or power systems, so there's nothing to pipe or automate here. Its mechanics are all about one boss-style mob, the FrostBear, and the gear you get from it. This section covers where it spawns, what it drops, and how to use those drops.[3][4][5]

Finding the FrostBear

The FrostBear spawns in biomes tagged as snowy or icy. Its spawn entry has a weight of 3 and a group size of exactly 1, so you meet one bear at a time. The pack has no config file for this mod, so these numbers come straight from the mod's own data.[4]

The mod also has a tag of blocks the bear can break: anything mineable with a shovel, plus snow, ice and leaves. Don't count on terrain in those categories to keep you safe from it.[6]

The bear's sound subtitles hint at its moves: it scrapes the ground before a charge, and a "Glacial Cataclysm gathers" subtitle warns of a bigger attack. It also exhales frost. The sources here don't give damage numbers for any of these attacks.[3]

Frostbite and warmth

The mod adds the Frostbite effect, and Frostfang and the Frozen Heart both interact with it. Killing a player with the mod's frost damage uses the death message "was shattered".[3]

The mod also defines a block tag of warmth sources: campfires, fire, soul fire, lava and magma blocks. The sources here don't spell out what the mod does with that tag.[7]

What the FrostBear drops

The FrostBear's loot table has two pools with one roll each. One gives a Frozen Heart and the other gives a Glacial Core.[5]

Frozen Heart

Consume a Frozen Heart to gain the Heart of Winter effect for 2 minutes. It also grants Regeneration II for 10 seconds.[3]

  • While Heart of Winter is active, a 5-block aura adds Frostbite to visible hostile mobs every 2s.[3]
  • It blocks freezing and ordinary Frostbite, but boss frost still pierces it.[3]
  • Eating one shows the message "HEART OF WINTER AWAKENED".[3]

Glacial Core and Frostfang

The Glacial Core is described as a frozen remnant of the FrostBear. It is used to craft and repair Frostfang, and it is the only item in the tag of Frostfang repair materials.[3][8]

How do you progress through FrostBear?

4 parts

FrostBear is small, and the sources for this pack show no tier ladder for it. What they do show is a short path: find the Frost Bear, take what it drops, and craft the items the mod adds.[2][4][5]

First, find the Frost Bear

The mod adds the Frost Bear to biomes tagged as snowy or icy. Its spawn entry has a weight of 3 and a group size of exactly 1, so expect to meet it alone while you explore cold areas.[4]

Next, collect its drops

The Frost Bear's loot table has separate pools, each rolling 1 time: one gives Frozen Heart and the other gives Glacial Core. Neither pool has conditions, so each simply gives its item.[5]

The Glacial Core has a second use. The mod's repair tag for Frostfang lists only Glacial Core, so that is the repair material to keep for it.[8]

Then, craft the mod's items

These are the in-pack recipes that make FrostBear items.[2]

Frozen Heart Trophy is a shapeless crafting recipe.

When the Frozen Heart Trophy is placed and broken, its block loot table gives back the trophy item once, as long as the block survives an explosion.[9]

Cold and warmth

The mod also defines a warmth_sources block tag that groups campfires, fire, soul fire, lava and magma blocks. The sources here only show that list, not what the mod does with it.[7]

Unverified The sources here show no quest in the pack's quest book that involves FrostBear, so where it sits in the quest progression is not confirmed. Check the quest book in game for any placement.
