Auroral is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 26.1.2-1.5.9. Harness the power of the Aurora Borealis in wintery north. Collect Liquid Aura in Glacial Basins to craft Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor with unique abilities. Features Nether-free brewing, magical flora, and a tiny pet Snowlette companion. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Auroral?

4 parts

Auroral is a winter expansion that turns cold biomes from barren wastes into hubs of progression. This pack ships version 26.1.2-1.5.9. The idea: wait for an aurora, collect its magic, and use it to craft Shimmersteel tools, Shimmerweave armor and Nether-free potions.[1][2][3]

The aurora

Auroras have a 33% chance to begin each night in cold biomes, according to the mod's in-game guide. The listed cold biomes are Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga. While the lights are up, Glacial Basins exposed to the sky fill with Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel gear repairs itself, and Aurora Blooms appear on snow blocks.[3][4]

The basic loop

  1. Wait for an aurora in a cold biome.[3]
  2. Harvest Frozen Petals from Aurora Blooms that spawn naturally on snow. Auroral Nautiluses also drop them during auroras.[3][5]
  3. Craft a Glacial Basin, your main workstation, and place it outside during an aurora so it collects Liquid Aura.[3][5]
  4. Use the Liquid Aura to infuse iron into Shimmersteel, then craft the enhanced tools, weapons and armor.[3]

What else it adds

  • Shimmerweave armor: Goggles, Tunic, Leggings and Skates, each made by upgrading iron armor with Shimmerweave Fabric.[1][6]
  • A Cold Brewing Stand that uses snowballs instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals brew an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle just like Nether Wart, so you never need the Nether.[1][5]
  • Auroral Nautili, peaceful floating creatures that only appear during auroras. You can tame one by feeding it an Aurora Shard, which has a 33% chance to work each time.[7]
  • Food and drink such as Hot Cocoa, Frosted Cookies and the S'nore.[8]

Quest book

Unverified Whether this pack's quest book has a chapter or group for Auroral, and whether the ATM Star path uses the mod, is told in the pack's quest book. The sources here do not show it.

How do you get started with Auroral?

7 parts

Auroral is built around one loop: wait for an aurora in a cold biome, fill a basin with Liquid Aura, and turn that into Shimmersteel gear. Here is the order I would do it in.[1][3]

Step one: craft the guidebook

Start with The Auroral Guidebook. The mod's own text says you need GuideME installed to read it, so keep that in mind if the book will not open.[9]

Step two: craft a Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation. Place it outside under open sky in a cold biome, and during an aurora it fills with Liquid Aura.[1][5]

In this pack a basin holds up to 3 aura levels (basin.basin_max_aura) and gains aura every 100 ticks while an aurora is active (basin.basin_fill_rate). Both match the mod defaults.[11]

Step three: get an aurora to happen

Auroras happen in cold biomes such as Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga. Each night has a 33% chance in this pack (aurora.aurora_chance).[3][4][11]

An aurora lasts at least 6,000 ticks (aurora.aurora_min_duration) and at most 12,000 ticks (aurora.aurora_max_duration). Those are the mod defaults too.[11]

You can improve the odds with a Hearthwood Log. Right-click it with Flint and Steel to light it. A lit log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which is about 78% with the 33% base.[4][11][12]

Hearthwood Logs also grow naturally in cold biomes, but you can craft one too.

Step four: harvest Frozen Petals

While the aurora is up, Aurora Blooms appear on snow. Break a fully grown (stage 3) bloom to get Frozen Petals. Breaking an immature bloom gives nothing, and any blooms left when the aurora ends wilt at sunrise, so harvest them in time.[5][13]

Step five: make your first Shimmersteel

Craft Unrefined Shimmersteel, then right-click your basin with it once it has collected aura. That infusion is what gives you a Shimmersteel Ingot. If the basin is not full enough, it tells you how many aura levels the infusion needs.[1][9]

  • Iron Ingot
  • Coal

Step six: upgrade your iron gear

Shimmersteel tools are made at a Smithing Table by upgrading iron equipment. The Smithing Template applies to iron equipment and takes a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric as the addition.[1][9]

Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped during an aurora. This pack repairs 1 durability per second (aurora.aurora_repair_rate).[4][11]

    Bonus: brewing without the Nether

Once you have petals, the Cold Brewing Stand is worth a look. It uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder, and Frozen Petals brew an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle, just like Nether Wart.[5]

Tip: Snowballs are your brewing fuel, and this pack lets them stack to 64 instead of the vanilla 16 (items.snowball_max_stack_size). That is also the mod's own default.[14]

    How does Auroral work?

    9 parts

Auroral doesn't ask you to wire up power cables or pipes. Almost everything runs off one timed event, the aurora, plus a handful of blocks that react to it. Once you know how the aurora works, the rest falls into place.[3][4]

    How an aurora starts

Each night in a cold biome has a chance of an aurora, and the pack leaves that at the mod default of 0.33 (the 33% you see in the in-game guide). You can find it at aurora.aurora_chance. Cold biomes here means Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga.[3][4][11]

In this pack auroras can only happen in the Overworld, set by aurora.aurora_dimensions. Each one lasts between 6,000 and 12,000 ticks, controlled by aurora.aurora_min_duration and aurora.aurora_max_duration. Both are left at the mod defaults.[11]

While the lights are up, Glacial Basins collect Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel gear repairs itself, Auroral Nautiluses may spawn, and Aurora Blooms appear on snow. Any blooms still standing wilt at sunrise.[3][13]

    The Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation. It has to sit under open sky, and during an aurora it slowly fills with Liquid Aura, up to 3 levels. In the pack, basin.basin_fill_rate is 100 ticks between each fill and basin.basin_max_aura is 3. Both match the mod defaults.[11][15]

The in-pack recipe for the basin.

    1. Place the basin under open sky.[15]
    2. Wait for an aurora to begin.[15]
    3. Watch the basin fill with Liquid Aura, up to 3 levels.[15]
    4. Right-click the basin with the input item to transform it.[15]

The basin turns Unrefined Shimmersteel into a Shimmersteel Ingot, Woven Leather into Shimmerweave Fabric, Frozen Petals into an Aurora Shard, and Ice into Shimmering Ice. The ingot infusion needs the basin completely full and uses up all 3 levels at once. The other three infusions cost 1 level each.[1][13][15]

The basin also shows its state in text: whether it is waiting for an aurora or collecting aura, and its current aura level out of the maximum.[9]

Tip: Keep several basins out under the sky. Each one collects aura on its own, so more basins means more infusions per aurora. A basin without a clear view of the sky won't fill.[15]

    Gear that repairs itself

During an aurora, equipped gear from a fixed list repairs itself. The list covers the Shimmersteel Pickaxe, Shimmersteel Axe, Shimmersteel Shovel, Shimmersteel Sword, Shimmersteel Hoe, Shimmersteel Bow, Shimmer Spear, Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings and Shimmerweave Skates.[4][16]

The repair rate is aurora.aurora_repair_rate, which is 1 durability per second in the pack. That is the mod default, and the allowed range is 0 to 10.[11]

    Upgrading iron gear

Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear is made at a Smithing Table. The Smithing Template goes in with iron equipment, and the addition slot takes a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric. The mod page says tools and weapons use ingots and armor uses fabric.[1][9]

    Hearthwood Log

Light a Hearthwood Log by right-clicking it with Flint and Steel. A burnt-out log can be relit the same way. The pack burns it for 168,000 ticks (7 in-game days of chunk-loaded time) per hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_burn_time. The timer only counts down while the chunk is active.[11][12]

    • Frostbite Immunity: players currently within 16 blocks of a lit log are immune. The pack sets this with hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_frostbite_radius, left at 16.[11][12]
    • Phantom Ward: a Phantom that strays within 16 blocks of a lit log catches fire on contact, and Phantoms refuse to target players currently warmed by Frostbite Immunity.[12]
    • Aurora Catalyst: a lit log within 32 blocks of a player in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Three logs stack for +45%, about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing.[4][12]
    • Villagers: villagers near a lit log may offer better trades. The pack's discount setting is hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_villager_discount, at 0.2.[11][12]

    Cold Brewing Stand

The Cold Brewing Stand behaves exactly like the vanilla brewing stand, except that snowballs are the fuel instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals work like Nether Wart for making Awkward Potions, so you can brew without visiting the Nether.[17]

    1. Fill the stand with snowballs, up to 20.[17]
    2. Put Water Bottles in the bottom slots.[17]
    3. Add Frozen Petals to the ingredient slot.[17]
    4. Wait for the brew to finish and you have Awkward Potions. The rest of the potion tree uses standard ingredients.[17]

Snowballs stack to 64 in this pack, set by items.snowball_max_stack_size. Vanilla is 16, and 64 is also the mod default.[14]

    Shimmering Ice and Shimmer Soil

Infuse regular ice in a basin and you get Shimmering Ice (1 aura level). It never melts, glows at light level 8, and hydrates farmland within a 4-block radius, like water. Glow-Leeks can only be planted on it.[15][18]

Use a Shimmersteel Hoe on snow to till it into Shimmer Soil. Crops on Shimmer Soil grow 3x faster at night and 5x faster during an aurora. Together with Shimmering Ice you get a farm that needs no water channels.[9][18]

    Roasted Snowballs

The Roasted Snowball can be made in a furnace, and the recipe list also has a campfire recipe. The pack adds a toaster recipe through Cooking for Blockheads, shown below. Eating one stops wild Nautili from spawning near you during auroras. A Sugared Roasted Snowball makes peace again.[10][19][20]

      Nautilus timings

Wild Nautili despawn 600 ticks (30 seconds) after the aurora ends, set by nautilus.nautilus_despawn_delay. A tamed one that is ridden gets a speed boost of up to 3x when fully charged. The pack leaves nautilus.nautilus_boost_strength at 3, and the boost lasts 10 ticks per nautilus.nautilus_boost_duration.[7][11]

How do you progress through Auroral?

      7 parts

Auroral does not hand you a tier list. Its progression is a loop built around the aurora, and this section follows that loop step by step. The Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear at the end is the payoff.[4][10]

      Step 1: Read the guidebook

Start by crafting The Auroral Guidebook, the in-game guidebook that explains the mod's mechanics.[10]

      Crafting Shapeless

      • Book
      • Snowball

      Recipe id: auroral:auroral_guide

The guidebook recipe in this pack.

Step 2: Learn how auroras work

Everything hinges on auroras. Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance to start one. While it is active, the sky fills with green and pink ribbons and the mod's magical effects switch on.[4]

      • Liquid Aura slowly fills up, and it is the magical substance needed for Shimmersteel infusion.[4]
      • Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while you wear or hold them during an aurora.[4]
      • Aurora Blooms appear on snow blocks, ready to be harvested for Frozen Petals.[4][13]
      • Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players.[4]

Step 3: Tilt the odds with Hearthwood

You do not have to wait on luck. A lit Hearthwood Log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing.[4][12]

Light the log by right-clicking it with Flint and Steel. A lit log burns for 7 in-game days of chunk-loaded time (168,000 ticks). It also gives Frostbite Immunity within 16 blocks and sets Phantoms on fire if they stray within 16 blocks.[12]

The pack has a crafting recipe for the log, on top of finding it in cold biomes.

      Step 4: Harvest Aurora Blooms

A fully grown Aurora Bloom (age 3) drops Frozen Petals and the bloom itself, and Fortune can add extra petals. With Silk Touch you get the decorative bloom instead. The guidebook calls the blooms the gateway to most of the mod's content.[13][21]

Frozen Petals also preserve snow angels. Sneak and right-click on snow with both hands empty to make one, and it fades after 5 minutes unless you right-click it with a petal.[22]

      Step 5: Shimmersteel tools

Shimmersteel is the mod's tool tier. The pack has crafting recipes for Unrefined Shimmersteel and the Smithing Template.[10]

                    Last step: Shimmerweave armor

The armor set is also made through smithing recipes: Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings and Shimmerweave Skates. Like the tools, the armor repairs itself while equipped during an aurora.[4][10]

                      Pack changes and handy extras

The pack adds one recipe of its own for this mod: a Cooking for Blockheads toaster recipe for Roasted Snowball. The mod's own campfire and smelting recipes for it are still there.[10]

One more useful craft is the Aurora Lantern. It gives light level 15, and holding it in either hand makes you immune to the Darkness effect, which is handy in the Deep Dark or against the Warden.[10][24]

                        Which Auroral config options matter?

                        6 parts

Good news if you like knowing exactly where you stand: every option in the Auroral config files is set to the mod's default in this pack. The pack changes none of these values, so anything you read about default Auroral behaviour applies here. Here are the options you are most likely to care about.[11][14]

                        Aurora timing and repair

                        Glacial Basin

                        Combat and gear

                        Hearthwood Log

                        Nautilus

                        Snowball stack size

The startup file sets items.snowball_max_stack_size to 64, the mod default. Vanilla snowballs stack to 16, and the allowed range is 16 to 64, so snowballs stack four times higher here than in vanilla.[14]

Tip: Want more auroras? aurora.aurora_chance accepts anything from 0.0 to 1.0. Remember that raising it would be your own change, since the pack ships 0.33.[11]

What changed in Auroral between versions?

                        1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Auroral version 26.1.2-1.5.9. The mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a new addition in this release.[2]

                        Auroral 1.5.9

                        • Added a server config option called aurora_dimensions, which lets you choose which dimensions can have auroras.[25]
                        • By default only the Overworld can have auroras.[25]
                        • If you enable auroras in another dimension, they follow that dimension's own day and night cycle.[25]
Tip: If you want auroras outside the Overworld, aurora_dimensions is the server config option to look at. Remember that the default is the Overworld only.[25]

                        Where this guide comes from

Written from what FTB Evolution 2 itself ships: its files and recipes, the in-game guidebooks and the mods' own pages. Every statement links to the source it came from, and the numbers are checked against the pack before publishing.

Guide last verified Oct 16, 2026.
