What is Spider Overhaul?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

The project page describes Spider Overhaul as a mod that improves Minecraft's spiders. It says each new mob is themed around a biome and comes with additional content to give you an incentive to engage with them. It also says most of the added creatures are spiders with unique mechanics. Further spiders and other additions are only planned for future updates, and the page says there is no concrete roadmap.[1]

This pack ships Spider Overhaul 0.0.6 for NeoForge. The project page describes the mod's latest version, so some details below may not match 0.0.6 exactly.[1][2]

What you'll meet

The project page says the latest version adds 11 new creatures, with 6 part of survival and 5 yet to be fully implemented. As of right now, it says, 6 spiders are implemented, and they inhabit different overworld biomes.[1]

  • Birch Spider: the project page says it nests inside fallen birch logs.[1]
  • Desert Spider: the project page calls it prickly and says it shoots its spines out on death.[1]
  • Swamp Spider: the project page says it mimics lilypads in swamps and is a great swimmer.[1]
  • Cavern Spider: the project page says it carries precious gems on its back and webs its targets to immobilize them.[1]
  • Jungle Spider: the project page calls it agile and poisonous, and says it spills spider pollen on death.[1]
  • Ice Spider: the project page says it uses icy venom to hinder its prey's movement.[1]

Extras and effects

According to the project page, Jungle spider pollen can be bottled and used on bamboo to turn it into Giant Bamboo, a decorative block. It also says ice chunks from the Ice Spider can be used to craft an ice snowball.[1]

  • Bogged: the project page says you temporarily lose the ability to swim and sink to the bottom.[1]
  • Icy: the project page says your feet temporarily slip on any block.[1]
  • Webbed: the project page says you get covered in web and can spam left click to get out of it early.[1]

Config

The mod has a config where you can change spider stats and switch between a Vanilla and an Alternative model style.[1]

How do you get started with Spider Overhaul?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Spider Overhaul is mostly about meeting new spiders, not about crafting. The mod's page says it adds 11 new creatures, but only 6 are part of survival so far, and each one is themed around a biome. So your first steps here are about learning what is out there and what it drops.[1]

Learn the spiders you will meet

The six spiders in survival are the Birch, Desert, Swamp, Cavern, Jungle and Ice spiders, and they all live in the overworld. The Cavern spider webs its targets to immobilize them. If you get the Webbed effect, spam left click to break out early. The Ice spider uses icy venom to hinder your movement, and the Icy effect makes your feet slip on any block.[1]

Tip: The mod has its own advancements. The root one is "The spiders are out of the walls". After that there is one for killing any overhauled spider variant, one for killing every variant at least once, and one for breaking out of the webbed effect before it wears off. They make a handy to-do list.[3]

Hunt an Ice spider and craft an Ice Snowball

The one crafting recipe for this mod that I can confirm in the pack is the Ice Snowball. The mod's page says you make it from the ice chunks an Ice spider drops. It is a fun novelty item rather than a progression item, so there is no need to rush it.[1][4]

This is the in-pack recipe for the Ice Snowball.

Try spider pollen on bamboo

Jungle spiders spill spider pollen when they die. The mod's page says the pollen can be bottled and used on bamboo to turn it into Giant Bamboo, a new decorative block. There is also an advancement for using spider pollen on bamboo.[1][3]

Adjust the config if you need to

The mod's config lets you multiply the damage, health, movement speed and spawn weight of all variant spiders. You can also have variant spiders replace vanilla spider and cave spider spawns in the biomes where the variants spawn. If spiders bother you, there is an option to hide their legs, and another switches the models to the vanilla style.[3]

How does Spider Overhaul work?

6 parts

Spider Overhaul is a mob mod, so the sources here describe spawns, status effects and drops rather than machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. The mod page says each new mob is themed around a certain biome, with additional content to give you an incentive to engage with it. The page also lists more spiders and features as planned for later updates, and this section covers only what the sources here show.[1]

Where the spiders spawn

Spawns are added by biome modifiers in the monster spawn group. Each variant has its own weight and group size, and the biome lists below come from the mod's own biome tags.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

  • Birch Spider: weight 100, groups of 1 to 2, in birch forest biomes.[5][11]
  • Cavern Spider: weight 120, groups of 1 to 3, in any Overworld biome.[6]
  • Desert Spider: weight 100, groups of 1 to 3, in desert and badlands biomes.[7][12]
  • Ice Spider: weight 100, groups of 1 to 3, in snowy biomes.[8][13]
  • Jungle Spider: weight 100, groups of 1 to 3, in jungle biomes.[9][14]
  • Swamp Spider: weight 100, groups of 1 to 3, in swamp biomes.[10][15]

The mod also removes vanilla spider and cave spider spawns from the jungle, swamp, desert, ice and birch biome groups, so those biomes belong to the variants instead.[16][17]

Swamp: infested lily pads

The mod page says the Swamp Spider mimics lily pads in swamps.[1]

The mod adds an Infested Lily Pad block as a vegetal decoration feature in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes, placed with a rarity filter that has a chance value of 4. Break one and it drops a plain lily pad.[3][18][19][20]

Birch spider nests

Birch forests can generate a surface structure called the birch spider nest. Structures spawn with a spacing of 8 and a separation of 6, and each one is picked evenly from a small, medium or large layout. The Birch Spider Nest block itself has an empty loot table, so it drops nothing when broken.[21][22][23][24][25]

Status effects

The mod adds the effects Bog, Icy and Webbed. Bog and Icy also exist as potions, splash potions, lingering potions and tipped arrows.[3]

  • Bog: you temporarily lose the ability to swim and sink to the bottom.[1]
  • Icy: temporarily makes your feet slip on any block. The mod page says the Ice Spider uses icy venom to hinder its prey's movement.[1]
  • Webbed: you get covered in web. The mod page says the Cavern Spider webs its targets to immobilize them, and spamming left click gets you out of it early.[1]
  • There is an advancement for breaking out of the webbed effect before it wears off.[3]

Drops and what they are for

Drops come from each spider's entity loot table. Chances below are written the way the tables write them, where 1 would be every time, and most entries get a looting bonus.[26][27][28][29][30][31][32]

  • Birch Spider: 1 to 3 string, a spider eye with chance 0.66 and a birch log with chance 0.2.[26]
  • Cavern Spider: 0 to 2 string.[27]
  • Desert Spider: 0 to 2 string, plus a spider eye with chance 0.33, sand with chance 0.25 and a cactus spine with chance 0.4.[28]
  • Ice Spider: 0 to 2 string and an ice shard with chance 0.80.[29]
  • Jungle Spider: a spider eye with chance 0.4 and bamboo with chance 0.3.[30]
  • Ocean Spider: 1 to 3 crab legs.[31]
  • Savanna Spider: 0 to 2 string and a spider eye with chance 0.33.[32]

Jungle Spiders also spill spider pollen when they die. You can bottle it and use it on bamboo to grow Giant Bamboo, a decorative block. There is an advancement for doing this.[1][3]

Ice chunks from the Ice Spider can be crafted into an Ice Snowball.[1][3][33]

Ice SnowballMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: spider_overhaul:ice_snowball

The in-pack Ice Snowball recipe is shapeless.

Cavern spider types

The Cavern Spider comes in amethyst, diamond and emerald types.[3]

The mod page describes the Cavern Spider as carrying precious gems on its back.[1]

Unverified The mod has a config screen with multipliers for health, damage, speed and spawn weight, plus toggles for hiding spider legs, replacing vanilla spiders and using vanilla models. The sources here include no config file for this mod in the pack, so the values this pack uses are not shown.

How do you progress through Spider Overhaul?

3 parts

For Spider Overhaul, the sources I have cover what each spider drops and one crafting recipe. They do not show a tiered chain where one spider unlocks the next, so this section is a drop breakdown rather than a ladder.[26][27][28][29][31][33]

What each spider drops

  • Birch spider: 1 to 3 string, a 0.66 chance of a spider eye, and a 0.2 chance of a birch log. Looting can add up to 2 more string.[26]
  • Cavern spider: only string, 0 to 2 per kill, with Looting adding up to 1 more.[27]
  • Desert spider: 0 to 2 string, a 0.33 chance of a spider eye, a 0.25 chance of sand, and a 0.4 chance of Cactus Spine.[28]
  • Ice spider: 0 to 2 string and a 0.80 chance of Ice Shard.[29]
  • Ocean spider: 1 to 3 Crab Leg per kill, with Looting adding up to 1 more. Its loot table has no string drop.[31]

Crafting

The pack's list of recipes that make Spider Overhaul items holds a single entry, a shapeless crafting recipe for the Ice Snowball.[33]

Recipe id: spider_overhaul:ice_snowball

This is the only Spider Overhaul recipe in the pack's recipe dump.

Blocks and biomes

  • The birch nest block has an empty loot table, so it drops nothing when broken.[25]
  • The giant bamboo block drops itself.[34]
  • The spider lily pad drops a regular lily pad.[20]
  • The mod's ice biome tag is built from the shared snowy biome tag.[13]
