What is Spider Overhaul?
3 parts
The project page describes Spider Overhaul as a mod that improves Minecraft's spiders. It says each new mob is themed around a biome and comes with additional content to give you an incentive to engage with them. It also says most of the added creatures are spiders with unique mechanics. Further spiders and other additions are only planned for future updates, and the page says there is no concrete roadmap.[1]
This pack ships Spider Overhaul 0.0.6 for NeoForge. The project page describes the mod's latest version, so some details below may not match 0.0.6 exactly.[1][2]
What you'll meet
The project page says the latest version adds 11 new creatures, with 6 part of survival and 5 yet to be fully implemented. As of right now, it says, 6 spiders are implemented, and they inhabit different overworld biomes.[1]
- Birch Spider: the project page says it nests inside fallen birch logs.[1]
- Desert Spider: the project page calls it prickly and says it shoots its spines out on death.[1]
- Swamp Spider: the project page says it mimics lilypads in swamps and is a great swimmer.[1]
- Cavern Spider: the project page says it carries precious gems on its back and webs its targets to immobilize them.[1]
- Jungle Spider: the project page calls it agile and poisonous, and says it spills spider pollen on death.[1]
- Ice Spider: the project page says it uses icy venom to hinder its prey's movement.[1]
Extras and effects
According to the project page, Jungle spider pollen can be bottled and used on bamboo to turn it into Giant Bamboo, a decorative block. It also says ice chunks from the Ice Spider can be used to craft an ice snowball.[1]
- Bogged: the project page says you temporarily lose the ability to swim and sink to the bottom.[1]
- Icy: the project page says your feet temporarily slip on any block.[1]
- Webbed: the project page says you get covered in web and can spam left click to get out of it early.[1]
Config
The mod has a config where you can change spider stats and switch between a Vanilla and an Alternative model style.[1]
How do you get started with Spider Overhaul?
4 parts
Spider Overhaul is mostly about meeting new spiders, not about crafting. The mod's page says it adds 11 new creatures, but only 6 are part of survival so far, and each one is themed around a biome. So your first steps here are about learning what is out there and what it drops.[1]
Learn the spiders you will meet
The six spiders in survival are the Birch, Desert, Swamp, Cavern, Jungle and Ice spiders, and they all live in the overworld. The Cavern spider webs its targets to immobilize them. If you get the Webbed effect, spam left click to break out early. The Ice spider uses icy venom to hinder your movement, and the Icy effect makes your feet slip on any block.[1]
Hunt an Ice spider and craft an Ice Snowball
The one crafting recipe for this mod that I can confirm in the pack is the Ice Snowball. The mod's page says you make it from the ice chunks an Ice spider drops. It is a fun novelty item rather than a progression item, so there is no need to rush it.[1][4]
This is the in-pack recipe for the Ice Snowball.
Try spider pollen on bamboo
Jungle spiders spill spider pollen when they die. The mod's page says the pollen can be bottled and used on bamboo to turn it into Giant Bamboo, a new decorative block. There is also an advancement for using spider pollen on bamboo.[1][3]
Adjust the config if you need to
The mod's config lets you multiply the damage, health, movement speed and spawn weight of all variant spiders. You can also have variant spiders replace vanilla spider and cave spider spawns in the biomes where the variants spawn. If spiders bother you, there is an option to hide their legs, and another switches the models to the vanilla style.[3]
How does Spider Overhaul work?
5 parts
Spider Overhaul is a creature mod. The sources describe spiders, the status effects they inflict and a few drops you can use, not machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. So this section covers how the spiders and their effects work.[1]
The spiders
As of the latest version, the mod page says the mod adds 11 new creatures, with only 6 being part of survival and 5 yet to be fully implemented. Each spider is themed around an overworld biome and behaves differently toward you.[1]
- Birch Spider (one of the 6 implemented as of right now): nests inside fallen birch logs.[1]
- Desert Spider (implemented as of right now): shoots its spines out when it dies.[1]
- Swamp Spider (implemented as of right now): mimics lilypads in swamps and is a great swimmer.[1]
- Cavern Spider (implemented as of right now): carries precious gems on its back and webs its targets to immobilize them.[1]
- Jungle Spider (implemented as of right now): agile and poisonous, and it spills spider pollen when it dies.[1]
- Ice Spider (implemented as of right now): uses icy venom to hinder its prey's movement.[1]
Status effects
The spiders bring their own effects. Bogged temporarily takes away your ability to swim, so you sink to the bottom. Icy temporarily makes your feet slip on any block. Webbed covers you in web.[1]
You can break out of Webbed early by spamming left click. The mod even has an advancement for breaking free before the effect wears off.[1][3]
Drops and what they do
Pollen from Jungle spiders can be bottled and used on bamboo to turn it into Giant Bamboo, a new decorative block. Using spider pollen on bamboo also has its own advancement.[1][3]
As of right now, the mod page says ice chunks from the Ice Spider can be used to craft the Ice Snowball. In this pack it is a shapeless crafting recipe.[1][4]
Desert Spider spines can be thrown, but the mod page marks that feature as still under development.[1]
Configurable behavior
The mod has a config for spider stats and model style. It can scale the damage, health and movement speed of all variant spiders with separate multipliers. A spawn weight multiplier controls how often they appear, and higher values mean more frequent spawns.[1][3]
Another option removes vanilla spider and cave spider spawns from biomes that have variant spider spawns. You can also switch the models to the vanilla style, or turn that off to use the custom overhauled models. If you have arachnophobia, there is an option to hide the legs on all spider models.[3]
Unverified The default values of these options, and whether the pack changes any of them, are set in the mod's config file. The sources here do not show that file, so those values are unconfirmed.
Compatibility
As of right now, the mod page mentions compatibility with Nyf's Spiders, where spiders crawl on walls and have improved AI. It also mentions the Dragon Spider Queen addon for Dragon Survival, where Spider Overhaul mobs are friendly to the player.[1]
How do you progress through Spider Overhaul?
The recipe dump for this pack shows one recipe that makes a Spider Overhaul item: the Ice Snowball. It is a shapeless crafting recipe, and the dump lists no item inputs for it.[4]
This is the only Spider Overhaul recipe in the pack's recipe dump, so there are no further tiers to step through.
Because the sources here show no other recipes for the mod, this section describes no gear ladder or unlock order for it. The recipe block above is the place to check the exact in-pack crafting recipe.[4]
