What is Simple Backups?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
Simple Backups is a small utility mod that does exactly what the name says: it creates scheduled backups of your world. You tell it how many backups to keep and how much storage they're allowed to take up, and it handles the rest, deleting the oldest files once those limits are reached.[1]
The pack ships version 1.21-4.0.7, and it's been part of the pack for a long while now, included since 0.52 or earlier.[2]
This one is for anyone running a world they'd rather not lose. The mod is meant to be used on the server side, so it's aimed at server owners and at your own singleplayer world, which runs an internal server anyway.[1]
Where it fits in progression
Nowhere, and that's the point. Simple Backups adds no items, no blocks and no recipes, so there's nothing to craft and nothing to unlock. It sits in the background from your first night in a dirt hut all the way through to the endgame, quietly keeping copies of your world safe.[1]
The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in the pack involve it. Think of it as insurance rather than content: you won't interact with it while playing, but you'll be very glad it's there the day a chunk corrupts or an automation experiment eats your base.[1]
Unverified The pack's exact backup interval, retention count and storage cap could not be confirmed from the available sources. Check the mod's config file in your instance folder for the values this pack ships with.
How do you get started with Simple Backups?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: Simple Backups is a set-it-and-forget-it mod. Its job is to create scheduled backups of your world, so there is no long crafting chain to get through before it's useful.[1]
What the mod does for you
- It creates backups on a schedule, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself.[1]
- You can define how many backups should be kept.[1]
- You can also define the maximum amount of storage the backups may use. When limits are reached, the oldest backup files are deleted first.[1]
Your first steps
- Install the mod on the server. It works server-side only, so players don't need to do anything on their end.[1]
- Decide how many backups you want to keep. More backups means more restore points to go back to.[1]
- Decide on a storage cap so backups never eat your whole disk. Because the oldest files are deleted first, you always keep the newest ones.[1]
Unverified I couldn't confirm any craftable items, quests, in-game tooltips or config option names for this mod in this pack, so there are no recipes to show here. Check the mod's config file on your server to see the exact settings and defaults the pack uses for the schedule, backup count and storage limit.
How does Simple Backups work?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide
There are no machines, multiblocks or power systems here. Simple Backups runs quietly in the background and does one job: it creates scheduled backups of the world.[1]
Scheduled backups
The mod's whole purpose is to create backups on a schedule, so your world gets saved copies without you remembering to do it manually.[1]
Retention: count and storage limits
Backups are kept under two kinds of limits. You can define how many backups should be saved, and you can define how much storage may be used at most. When a limit is reached, the oldest backup files get deleted to make room.[1]
- A maximum number of backups to keep.[1]
- A maximum amount of storage the backups may use in total.[1]
- Oldest-first deletion once either limit is hit.[1]
Unverified The pack ships no config file for this mod, so the exact backup interval, retention count and storage cap in use here could not be confirmed from the available sources. Check your server's generated config folder for the values actually running.
Server side only
This mod can be used on server only, so it is the server (or the integrated server behind your singleplayer world) doing the work. There is nothing to install or interact with on a client that joins a remote server.[1]
Which Simple Backups config options matter?
4 parts
Simple Backups has two config files in this pack: common.toml holds nearly everything, and server.toml only controls who sees backup messages and whether commands need cheats. Only two values are marked as changed from the mod default.[3][4]
What the pack changed
- timer is set to 60, so a backup runs every hour. The mod default is 120. The value is in minutes.[3]
- backupChainsToKeep is set to 5. The mod default is 10. This is the maximum number of backup chains kept.[3]
Storage and format
- maxDiskSize is "25 GB". When the backup folder grows past this, old files are deleted. Write it as a number, a space and a unit (B, KB, MB, GB or TB).[3]
- backupFormat is "ZIP" and backupType is "FULL_BACKUPS", so every backup is a complete one.[3]
- compressionLevel is -1, the mod default, which balances speed and compression.[3]
- outputPath is "simplebackups", and createSubDirs is true. With sub-directories on, the keep-count and disk-size limits are calculated per world sub-directory.[3]
- preCopy is true, so the world is copied to a temporary directory before compressing. That needs some temporary disk space, roughly the size of your world during a backup.[3]
If you switch to ZSTD or SBK, you must put the zstd-jni jar in config/simplebackups/external-dependencies without extracting it. sbkAlgorithm is "ZSTD" here, but it only matters when the format is SBK. The setting fullBackupTimer (525,960 minutes, the mod's once-a-year default) is how often a full backup is made when only modified files are saved.[3]
When backups happen
- enabled is true, and saveAll is true so a save-all is forced before each backup.[3]
- noPlayerBackups is false, so no backups are made while nobody is online. If you enable it, noPlayerBackupTimer is 0, which means it uses the normal timer.[3]
- useTickCounter is false, so the timer follows real world time, not server ticks.[3]
Messages and errors
- sendMessages is true, and messagesForEveryone is true, so every player sees backup messages, not only those with permission level 2 or higher.[3][4]
- commandsCheatsDisabled is false.[4]
- error_handling.collectErrors is true. I/O errors are printed to chat and the mod tries to finish the backup with as many files as possible. error_handling.deleteUnfinishedBackup is also true, and it only applies if you turn collectErrors off.[3]
- mod_compat.mc2discord is true, but it needs mc2discord installed to do anything. mod_compat.onlyFavorites is false.[3]
- The ignore lists are empty, and to_ignore.ignore_temp_files is true, so NeoForge temp files are skipped.[3]
