What is Simple Backups?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Simple Backups is a small utility mod that does exactly what the name says: it creates scheduled backups of your world. You tell it how many backups to keep and how much storage they're allowed to take up, and it handles the rest, deleting the oldest files once those limits are reached.[1]

The pack ships version 1.21-4.0.7, and it's been part of the pack for a long while now, included since 0.52 or earlier.[2]

This one is for anyone running a world they'd rather not lose. The mod is meant to be used on the server side, so it's aimed at server owners and at your own singleplayer world, which runs an internal server anyway.[1]

Where it fits in progression

Nowhere, and that's the point. Simple Backups adds no items, no blocks and no recipes, so there's nothing to craft and nothing to unlock. It sits in the background from your first night in a dirt hut all the way through to the endgame, quietly keeping copies of your world safe.[1]

The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in the pack involve it. Think of it as insurance rather than content: you won't interact with it while playing, but you'll be very glad it's there the day a chunk corrupts or an automation experiment eats your base.[1]

Tip: Because the number of backups and the maximum storage used are both configurable, it's worth checking those limits early if you're on a machine with limited disk space, since backups build up over a long playthrough.[1]

Unverified The pack's exact backup interval, retention count and storage cap could not be confirmed from the available sources. Check the mod's config file in your instance folder for the values this pack ships with.

How do you get started with Simple Backups?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Simple Backups is a set-it-and-forget-it mod. Its job is to create scheduled backups of your world, so there is no long crafting chain to get through before it's useful.[1]

What the mod does for you

  • It creates backups on a schedule, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself.[1]
  • You can define how many backups should be kept.[1]
  • You can also define the maximum amount of storage the backups may use. When limits are reached, the oldest backup files are deleted first.[1]
Tip: This mod can be used on a server only. If you run a dedicated server for your friends, that's where it does its work.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Install the mod on the server. It works server-side only, so players don't need to do anything on their end.[1]
  2. Decide how many backups you want to keep. More backups means more restore points to go back to.[1]
  3. Decide on a storage cap so backups never eat your whole disk. Because the oldest files are deleted first, you always keep the newest ones.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any craftable items, quests, in-game tooltips or config option names for this mod in this pack, so there are no recipes to show here. Check the mod's config file on your server to see the exact settings and defaults the pack uses for the schedule, backup count and storage limit.

How does Simple Backups work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

There are no machines, multiblocks or power systems here. Simple Backups runs quietly in the background and does one job: it creates scheduled backups of the world.[1]

Scheduled backups

The mod's whole purpose is to create backups on a schedule, so your world gets saved copies without you remembering to do it manually.[1]

Retention: count and storage limits

Backups are kept under two kinds of limits. You can define how many backups should be saved, and you can define how much storage may be used at most. When a limit is reached, the oldest backup files get deleted to make room.[1]

  • A maximum number of backups to keep.[1]
  • A maximum amount of storage the backups may use in total.[1]
  • Oldest-first deletion once either limit is hit.[1]

Unverified The pack ships no config file for this mod, so the exact backup interval, retention count and storage cap in use here could not be confirmed from the available sources. Check your server's generated config folder for the values actually running.

Server side only

This mod can be used on server only, so it is the server (or the integrated server behind your singleplayer world) doing the work. There is nothing to install or interact with on a client that joins a remote server.[1]

Tip: The mod is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, and the author explicitly allows it in any modpack, so you can carry the same backup setup over to your own server without worrying about permissions.[1]

Which Simple Backups config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Simple Backups is exactly what the name says: a mod that makes scheduled backups of your world. Its settings let you decide how many backup files are kept and how much total storage the backups are allowed to use, and once you pass those limits the oldest backup files get deleted automatically.[1]

One thing worth knowing up front: this mod is meant to run on the server side only, so it is the server owner (or you, if you're hosting the world yourself) who controls these settings rather than each individual player.[1]

Unverified The pack does not ship a config file for Simple Backups, so we can't confirm any specific backup interval, backup count or storage cap from the pack files. Whatever the mod's own defaults are, that's what you're running until you change it yourself on your server.

Tip: If your server's disk starts filling up, the storage limit is the option to reach for first, it caps total backup size and prunes the oldest files instead of letting them pile up forever.[1]

What changed in Simple Backups between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 11 0.1.2 ships Simple Backups 26.1.3. The mod has been in the pack since 0.0.1 or earlier, so you've had backups available from the start. These are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs for the two most recent versions.[3]

26.1.3

  • Fixed a bug where the noPlayerBackupCount option had no effect.[4]

26.1.2

  • Added sbk support.[5]
  • Added a preCopy config option, which copies the world before compressing it.[5]
  • Fixed the merge command for non-zip formats.[5]
  • Fixed backup chains not being recognized when the format is not zip.[5]
  • Fixed the log not being written when a backup fails.[5]

Since the pack includes 26.1.3, all of the changes above are part of the version you're running in 0.1.2.[3][4][5]
