Mahou Tsukai is a mod in All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta, where it is version 26.1.2-v1.36.36. A magic mod focused on special effects and spell uniqueness (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mahou Tsukai?

2 parts

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod that cares more about how spells look and feel than about how you create them. Instead of a long crafting chain for spellcasting, the focus is on special effects and making each spell unique. Many spells are inspired by Fate/Stay Night and other media, but you don't need to know any of it to enjoy the mod.[1]

This pack includes version 26.1.2-v1.36.36 of the mod.[2]

How the mod is designed

  • It avoids overlapping with vanilla or other mods, so there is no "magic bonemeal" or "magic flint and steel".[1]
  • Spells don't compete with each other. There are no tiers and no progression apart from mana, so even the most basic spells stay useful or fun.[1]
  • There is no worldgen apart from a custom dimension. Nothing in the mod is gated behind custom worldgen, which is why it is easy to add to existing worlds.[1]

Configuration

Almost everything in the mod is configurable: mana costs, mana regen, sound effect volume, rendering, spell sizes and effects, and how often certain spells tick. A single spell often has 5 configs. If a spell lags or does something you don't like, you can usually tone it down a lot through its config.[1]

How do you get started with Mahou Tsukai?

5 parts

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod about spell uniqueness and special effects. It has no tiers and no progression apart from mana, so no spell is just a stepping stone to a better one. Here is a sensible order for your first crafts.[1]

Step one: craft the Knowledge Compendium

Start with the Mahou Tsukai Knowledge Compendium. It has its own crafting recipe in this pack.[3]

Step two: make the grinding tools and powders

The mod has a Mortar, a Pestle and a combined Mortar and Pestle, each with its own recipe. There are powders for diamond, emerald, ender, eye, gold, iron and quartz, such as Powdered Iron and Powdered Diamond. Every powder has a second recipe (the ones ending in _2) that gives 2 powders at once.[3]

Step three: Spell Cloth and the Mahoujin Projector

Spell Cloth exists as a block, and its recipe makes 4 at a time. The Mahoujin Projector is a block with its own recipe.[3][4]

Step four: get a mana store

Mana is the one thing that grows in this mod, so storage matters. You can craft the Attuned Emerald, the Attuned Diamond, the Mana Circuit and the Magitech Mana Circuit.[1][3]

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_EMERALD_CAPACITY]]: an Attuned Emerald holds 1,000 mana in this pack (mod default 5,000).[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_DIAMOND_CAPACITY]]: an Attuned Diamond holds 2,000 mana (mod default 10,000).[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_CAPACITY]] and [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_MAGITECH_CAPACITY]]: both circuits hold 20,000 mana (mod default 100,000).[5]

How the pack changes your own mana

Watch out: The pack cuts mana hard compared with the mod defaults, and some spells cost more. Plan your mana before you rely on a circle or scroll.[5]
Tip: eyes.leylines.LEY_PUNISHMENT is set to 0 here. The mod default of -1 takes 1 mana from your regen when you are not near a leyline, so the pack removes that penalty.[5]

Unverified The sources here show no guidebook text and no quests for this mod, so how to draw and activate a circle, and what each circle needs, is not covered in this section.

How does Mahou Tsukai work?

11 parts

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod built around spell uniqueness and special effects rather than around how spells are crafted. It has no spell tiers and no progression except mana, and almost everything in it is configurable, so the numbers below are the ones this pack actually uses.[1]

Mana is your one progression

Everything runs on your personal mana pool. The pack caps it at 20,000 with mana.MAX_MANA_CAP, down from the mod default of 200,000. You regenerate 1 mana per tick with mana.MANA_REGEN_PER_TICK, which is the mod default.[5]

Your maximum grows as you spend mana. Each increase raises your max by 1 (mana.MANA_INCREASE). The pack sets mana.MANA_UP_COUNTER to 200, the amount of mana spent before an increase, where the mod default is 100.[5]

Sleeping gives back 0.4 of your max mana in this pack, down from the default 0.5 (mana.MANA_RECOVERY_SLEEP). Creative mode ignores mana costs (mana.CREATIVE_IGNORES_MANA_COSTS).[5]

Leylines

Ley lines affect your mana regen (eyes.leylines.LEY_AFFECTS_MANA is true), and ley points sit 300 apart (eyes.leylines.LEY_DISTANCE). The mod default is that you lose 1 mana of regen for not being near a leyline. The pack sets eyes.leylines.LEY_PUNISHMENT to 0 instead of -1, so the floor for leyline mana is 0.[5]

Storing mana

The pack shrinks every mana battery compared to the mod defaults. An Attuned Diamond holds 2,000 mana, down from 10,000 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_DIAMOND_CAPACITY]]). An Attuned Emerald holds 1,000, down from 5,000 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_EMERALD_CAPACITY]]).[5]

The Mana Circuit holds 20,000 instead of 100,000 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_CAPACITY]]), and the Magitech Mana Circuit holds the same 20,000 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_MAGITECH_CAPACITY]]). Things can be up to 10 blocks away from a Mana Circuit and still use it ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_RANGE]]).[5]

Mahoujin circles

Most of the mod's effects come from Mahoujin blocks, magic circles with names like Alarm Boundary, Ordered Displacement or Alchemical Exchange. Each circle works on a timer: its config sets how often it checks or acts, and many also set a mana cost. Boundaries have a radius, a cycle for doing their job, and a separate cycle for draining mana.[4][5]

Boundaries

The boundary settings below are all the mod's defaults. The pack does not change them.[5]

Displacement circles

Exchange circles

Exchange circles trade one resource for another. The pack changes several of them, and it mostly makes them less generous.[5]

Scroll spells and their numbers

Many spells are scrolls with a mana cost and a duration. Most of the Mystic Eyes numbers below are the mod defaults, and Death Collection is the one the pack changes.[4][5]

Familiars

The pack leaves the familiar settings at the mod defaults.[5]

  • Summon Familiar: the scroll costs 200 mana ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.SUMMON_FAMILIAR_MANA_COST]]). The familiar has 10 health ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_HEALTH]]) and chunk loads ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_CHUNKLOADS]] is true).[5]
  • Recall costs 20 mana ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.recall familiar.RECALL_FAMILIAR_MANA_COST]]), Familiar Exchange 40 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.swap familiar.SWAP_FAMILIAR_MANA_COST]]) and Shared Vision 200 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.shared vision.POSSESS_ENTITY_MANA_COST]]).[5]
  • Familiar's Garden: 200 mana ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.familiars garden.FAMILIARS_GARDEN_MANA_COST]]), a range of 7 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.familiars garden.FAMILIARS_GARDEN_RANGE]]) and a duration of 1,200 ticks ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.familiars garden.FAMILIARS_GARDEN_TIME]]).[5]
  • Butterfly Effect: 100 mana ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.butterfly effect.BUTTERFLY_EFFECT_MANA_COST]]), lasts 400 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.butterfly effect.BUTTERFLY_EFFECT_DURATION]]), and allows 40 butterflies per chunk ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.butterfly effect.BUTTERFLY_EFFECT_CHUNK_LIMIT]]).[5]

Projection and weapons

Projection is where the pack leans hardest on the config. The Projection scroll costs 8,000 mana, up from the default 1,000 (projection.projection.PROJECTION_MANA_COST). Proximity Projection costs 30, down from 160 (projection.proximity.PROXIMITY_PROJECTION_MANA_COST). Strengthening costs 200, up from 50 (projection.strengthening.STRENGTHENING_MANA_COST), and its cap is lowered to 15 from 50 (projection.strengthening.STRENGTHENING_CAP).[5]

The projected weapons are capped far below the mod defaults:[5]

Other gear

The Mystic Code - First Sorcery has 15 durability in this pack, down from the default 50 ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.FIRST_SORCERY_DURABILITY]]).[5]

The Boundary of Drain Life and Strengthening scrolls are on its blacklist ([[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.MYSTIC_CODE_FIRST_SORCERY_BLACKLIST]]).[5]

The Fog Projector has a max radius of 30 (fogprojector.FOG_PROJECTOR_MAX_RADIUS).[5]

Tip: With a ceiling of 20,000 mana (mana.MAX_MANA_CAP), the 8,000 mana Projection scroll (projection.projection.PROJECTION_MANA_COST) takes a big share of your pool, while Proximity Projection at 30 (projection.proximity.PROXIMITY_PROJECTION_MANA_COST) is cheap. Check a scroll's cost against your max mana before you rely on it.[5]

How do you progress through Mahou Tsukai?

4 parts

The sources I have for this mod cover its crafting recipes and a few block drops. They do not give a tier order, so I won't invent one. What follows is what the pack's recipes do show, grouped by how the items relate.[3]

Powders and the Mortar and Pestle

The mod has powdered versions of diamond, emerald, ender, eye, gold, iron and quartz. Each powder has two shapeless recipes in the pack: one that makes a single powder and a second that makes 2× the powder. The recipe blocks below show the exact ingredients for the Mortar and Pestle and for one of the powders.[3]

Which Mahou Tsukai config options matter?

7 parts

Mahou Tsukai is built to be tweaked: nearly everything is configurable, often with several options per spell. This pack uses config/mahoutsukai-server.toml and changes a lot of it. The pattern is lower caps and smaller pools, so here are the values you will actually notice.[1][5]

Mana pool and regen

Mana storage

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_DIAMOND_CAPACITY]] is currently 2,000 in this pack (mod default 10,000).[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_EMERALD_CAPACITY]] is currently 1,000 in this pack (mod default 5,000).[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_CAPACITY]] and [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_MAGITECH_CAPACITY]] are both currently 20,000 in this pack (mod default 100,000 for each).[5]
Watch out: projection.projection.PROJECTION_MANA_COST is currently 8,000 in this pack, up from the mod default of 1,000. Check it against your mana pool before you plan around projection scrolls.[5]

Scroll costs that moved

Weapon and damage caps

The pack currently squeezes the huge default damage ceilings down to small numbers.[5]

Mystic staff and buffs

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic.aoe explosion.MYSTIC_STAFF_AOE_FACTOR]] is currently 0.001 in this pack (mod default 0.004) and [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic.big explosion.MYSTIC_STAFF_BIG_FACTOR]] is currently 0.002 (mod default 0.012). Each is either a fraction of max mana (if scaling) or a flat damage value.[5]
  • The beam mode costs more: mystic.beam.MYSTIC_STAFF_BEAM_MANA_PER_TICK is currently 800 in this pack (mod default 500). Its damage ramps up more slowly, because mystic.beam.MYSTIC_STAFF_BEAM_DAMAGE_ACCELERATION is currently 1.02 (mod default 1.5).[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic.borrowed authority.AUTHORITY_SPEED_MULTIPLIER]] is currently 3.2 in this pack (mod default 1.8). It is the speed multiplier while the buff is active.[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic.cup of heaven.HEAVENS_CUP_DURATION]] is currently 600 in this pack (mod default 1,200). It is how long potions generated by the network last.[5]

Exchange, souls and the rest

  • exchange.damage.DAMAGE_EXCHANGE_MANA_GAIN is currently 5 in this pack (mod default 20). It is the mana you get back when injured.[5]
  • exchange.chronal.CHRONAL_EXCHANGE_MANA_GAIN_LOSS is currently 7 in this pack (mod default 10), and exchange.durability.DURABILITY_EXCHANGE_EFFICIENCY is currently 4 (mod default 1). That is how much durability is taken per mana point gained.[5]
  • Death Collection: [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#eyes.death collection.DEATH_COLLECTION_MAX]] is currently 5 in this pack (mod default 10,000,000), [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#eyes.death collection.DEATH_COLLECTION_DRAIN_PER_SOUL]] is currently 5 (mod default 1) and [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#eyes.death collection.DEATH_COLLECTION_SOUL_VALUE_MOB]] is currently 0.1 (mod default 0.25).[5]
  • secret.geas.MANA_REGEN_PER_GEAS is currently 2 in this pack (mod default 3).[5]
  • projection.treasury.TREASURY_PROJECTION_CHAINS_COOLDOWN is currently 20 in this pack (mod default 10). It is the delay between chains of the gauntlet in Chains mode.[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#projection.reality marble.MARBLE_DIMENSION_SPAWN_CHANCE]] is currently 0.5 in this pack (mod default 0.8). It is the probability of a sword spawning.[5]

Settings the pack leaves as they are

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#projection.power consolidation.CALIBURN_FUN_REQUIRED]] is currently false in this pack, so Caliburn is not gated behind the fun requirements.[5]
  • mana.CREATIVE_IGNORES_MANA_COSTS is currently true in this pack, so mana costs are ignored in creative mode.[5]
  • other.MAGIC_DAMAGES_PLAYER and other.ONE_LIFE are both currently false in this pack.[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic.big explosion.MYSTIC_STAFF_WORLD_DAMAGE]] is currently true in this pack, so the big explosion still damages the world.[5]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#boundary.drain life.DRAIN_LIFE_ENTITY_BLACKLIST]] currently lists dummmmmmy:target_dummy and trainingdummy:dummy in this pack, so the Drain Life boundary does not consider those dummies. That includes the Training Dummy dummy.[5]

What changed in Mahou Tsukai between versions?

Mahou Tsukai has been in All the Mods 11 since 0.8.0-beta or earlier, and 0.10.0-beta ships version 26.1.2-v1.36.36 of it.[2]

The only mod changelog entry the sources here show is for that same version, 26.1.2-v1.36.36: it fixes the projector armor instructions not displaying.[10]

The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there is nothing more to report on how it changed between pack releases.[2]
