What is FramedBlocks?

2 parts

FramedBlocks is a building mod. It adds blocks in lots of different shapes, and each one can be made to look like almost any other block in the game. This pack includes version 11.4.0.[1][2]

The shape list is huge. It covers cubes, slabs, panels, stairs and slopes, plus several kinds of corners. There are also functional blocks like doors, trapdoors, fences, pressure plates, buttons, levers, ladders, signs, torches and chests. If you build a lot, this gives you far more shapes to work with in whatever material you like.[1]

How you use it

  • Right click a framed block with almost any solid block to make it look like that block.[1]
  • Right click with a fluid container to make it look like the fluid inside. Right click with an empty fluid container to remove a fluid look.[1]
  • Right click with Glowstone Dust to make the block produce light.[1]
  • Right click with a Framed Hammer to remove the camo.[1]

Handy tools

  • The Framed Wrench rotates a framed block. On most blocks, the result depends on which face you click.[1]
  • The Framed Screwdriver cycles through different states of the camo block.[1]
  • The Framed Blueprint copies a framed block, including its camo and glowing state. It does not copy the block's rotation.[1]
  • The Framed Key locks certain framed blocks in their current shape so neighbor updates do not change it. That lets you place things like Framed Stairs in a corner shape without the usual neighbors.[1]
Tip: The Framed Collapsible Block lets you build custom slopes. Use the Framed Hammer on a corner of one face to move that corner inward, or sneak and click to move it outward.[1]

How do you get started with FramedBlocks?

3 parts

FramedBlocks gives you building blocks in lots of shapes that can be made to look like almost any other block in the game. So you don't need a different block for every material. You need the shapes, and then you pick the look.[1]

Start with the Framed Cube

The Framed Cube is the first shape in the mod's shape list. It's a good first craft, because you can see how a framed block behaves before you move on to fancier shapes. The recipe below is the exact one used in this pack.[1][3]

Branch out into other shapes

Once you're comfortable with the cube, the mod offers a long list of shapes. These include slopes (which can also be placed vertically), slabs, panels, stairs, doors, chests and rail slopes. Some shapes have a special placement trick. For example, the Framed Slope Slab is placed upside down by holding the sneak key.[1]

Good next crafts are the Framed Double Slab and the Framed Double Panel, both of which are in the shape list. For storage, try the Framed Chest.[1][3]

Tip: If a block won't work as a camo, the mod can tell you why. A client setting controls how chatty those messages are, with the options NONE, DEFAULT and DETAILED. Another client setting controls the opacity of the placement preview, from 30 (almost transparent) to 255 (fully opaque), and its tooltip lists a default of 170.[4]

How does FramedBlocks work?

5 parts

FramedBlocks adds blocks of many shapes that can be made to look like almost any other block in the game. The mechanics that matter are about how you apply, change and copy that look.[1]

Applying and removing camo

  • Right click a framed block with almost any solid block to make it look like that block.[1]
  • Right click it with a fluid container to make it look like the fluid inside (listed for Minecraft 1.19 and newer). Right click with an empty fluid container to remove a fluid camo.[1]
  • Right click it with Glowstone Dust to make it produce light.[1]
  • Right click it with a Framed Hammer to remove the camo.[1]

Not every block can be used as a camo. The camo message verbosity client option controls how much feedback you get when a block is refused. NONE shows nothing, DEFAULT warns when the block has a BlockEntity and isn't explicitly allowed or is explicitly disallowed, and DETAILED also warns about non-solid blocks that aren't explicitly allowed.[4]

Tools that change a placed block

  • The Framed Wrench, or any other item in the wrench tag, rotates a framed block. On most blocks the result depends on which face you clicked.[1]
  • The Framed Screwdriver cycles through different states of the camo block.[1]
  • Prism corners (Framed Prism, Inner Prism and Double Prism Corners) automatically pick a texture offset based on where you place them, so larger surfaces built from them fit together. If you don't want that, left click the block with the Framed Hammer to toggle the offset.[1]
  • Slope Slab and Double Slope Slab blocks are placed upside down by holding the sneak key.[1]

Copying builds with the blueprint

The Framed Blueprint copies a framed block including its camo and glowing state. The rotation of the block itself is not copied, so you will still need to rotate the result yourself.[1]

Glowing blocks

Glowstone Dust gives a framed block real light. The Framed Glowing Cube is a different thing: it glows in the dark without emitting light. A client option decides whether ambient occlusion is applied to blocks that glow from applied glowstone dust. If it is off, the vanilla behavior of disabling ambient occlusion for light-emitting blocks is used.[1][4]

Overlays and client options

Many framed blocks show an on-screen overlay while you look at them. These cover camo rotation, copycat style, item frame background, one-way window, prism offset, reinforcement, state lock, the slope face toggle, the waterlogging toggle, trapdoor texture rotation and the collapsible block split line. Each has its own display mode: HIDDEN, ICON, DETAILED_TOGGLE (detailed info while crouching) or DETAILED_ALWAYS. A separate maximum overlay mode caps the visibility of all of them.[4]

Other client options affect how placement and rendering behave. You can choose whether ghost blocks show while you hold a framed block, and how opaque that preview is. The mod's default opacity is 170, within a range of 30 to 255. Double blocks can also show an outline of the part you are targeting.[4]

The connected textures mode can be NONE, FULL_FACE, FULL_EDGE or DETAILED, and it sets how much connected-texture support framed blocks get. The solid frame mode (NEVER, DEFAULT or ALWAYS) decides when a framed block without a camo gets a solid model instead of the default frame texture.[4]

Tip: If the camo overlays clutter your screen, lower the maximum overlay mode instead of changing each overlay one by one.[4]

Unverified The values this pack actually uses for the client options above are set in the mod's config files, and the sources here do not show them. The numbers on this page, such as the 170 default opacity, come from the mod's own option descriptions.

How do you progress through FramedBlocks?

3 parts

FramedBlocks doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. Every FramedBlocks recipe I can see is an ordinary crafting recipe, either shaped or shapeless, so you don't unlock shapes by climbing through machines or stages. Here is how the recipes are organised.[3]

The basic block

Start with the Framed Cube, whose crafting recipe is shown below. Other shapes get their own crafting recipes too, and a few are shapeless, such as the Framed Button and the Framed Centered Slab.[3]

Tools and utility items

Besides the building shapes, the pack has the Camo Applicator, the Framed Blueprint and the Framed Axe, with their recipes shown below.[3]

What changed in FramedBlocks between versions?

4 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships FramedBlocks 11.4.0, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.1 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. Only the releases whose changelogs were available are covered, so there are gaps between them.[2]

11.4.0 (the version in this pack)

  • Copycat-style appearance was added to various blocks, and the Framed Blueprint now copies that property.[5]
  • The Framed Blueprint also copies the chain type of lanterns, and copies Framed Boards exactly when multiple faces are present.[5]
  • The Framing Saw has full JEI recipe transfer support.[5]
  • A double-block part indicator was added. It is off by default.[5]
  • Fixes: duplication when rotating a Framed Board in certain configurations, part hit detection on adjustable double blocks being off by one pixel, and edge cases in Collapsible Copycat Block rotation.[5]
  • The modifier buttons in the Camo Applicator screen were improved, and placement state cycling no longer sometimes copies invalid values from the current placement state.[5]

11.3.x

  • 11.3.3: fixed a crash when applying fluid camos with the Camo Applicator, and fixed fluid camos sometimes rendering incorrectly after changing resource packs. The AdditionalPlacements compat was re-activated, and you can now add a Framed Board to an existing one on the opposite side.[6]
  • 11.3.2: fixed a crash when opening a Framed Fence Gate with certain camos applied, and a crash with framed blocks in Building Gadgets 2 schematics.[7]
  • 11.3.0: added a manual placement state cycling system, JEI ghost ingredient quick-move support, and an option to display Framing Saw results with a dummy camo. The default crafting duration of the Powered Framing Saw was reduced.[8]
  • 11.3.0 also fixed Checkered Panel mirroring, rare occlusion issues on chunk boundaries, a worldgen crash in the plantability check, and a crash with camos whose model has inward facing quads. Fluid camo rotation order was improved too.[8]

11.2.0

  • Added the Framed Axe, which retains all camos on framed blocks broken with it.[9]
  • Added the Camo Applicator and the Framed Banner.[9]
  • Attempting to remove a modifier that isn't there (glowing, intangibility, reinforcement, emissivity) is now handled better, and wrench rotation was improved on various framed blocks.[9]
  • Fixed occlusion problems on the Inner Prism, Inner Sloped Prism, Trapdoor bottom face and vertical faces of Walls. Also fixed a crash when applying a connected textures block to Lanterns, an x-ray effect from placing with certain copy-paste tools, and the insert/extract guards on the Powered Framing Saw.[9]

11.1.2

  • Added the Paint Roller for applying block overlays.[10]
  • Improved the Framed Iron Door item texture and the handling of randomized models on bookshelves.[10]
  • Prevented unnecessary cache cleanup when joining singleplayer or multiplayer, or closing the game from the main menu.[10]
