What is Simple Backups?

2 parts

Simple Backups does one job: it creates backups of your world on a schedule, so you can roll back if a base gets wrecked, a farm goes wrong or a world gets corrupted.[1]

You control how many backups are kept, and you can also set a maximum amount of storage they may use. Once you hit those limits, the oldest backup files are deleted to make room, so the backup folder won't grow forever.[1]

Who it is for

This one is mainly for server owners and anyone hosting a world for friends. The mod can be used on the server only, so it's a server-side safety net rather than something you interact with while playing.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships Simple Backups version 1.21-4.0.6. It was already in the pack by version 0.32 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]

Unverified The sources I was given don't show any quests, items or progression steps tied to this mod, and don't place it on the ATM Star path. It looks like a background utility, but that is not confirmed by the sources.

How do you get started with Simple Backups?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Simple Backups is a set-it-and-forget-it mod. Its job is to create scheduled backups of your world, so there is no long crafting chain to get through before it's useful.[1]

What the mod does for you

  • It creates backups on a schedule, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself.[1]
  • You can define how many backups should be kept.[1]
  • You can also define the maximum amount of storage the backups may use. When limits are reached, the oldest backup files are deleted first.[1]
Tip: This mod can be used on a server only. If you run a dedicated server for your friends, that's where it does its work.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Install the mod on the server. It works server-side only, so players don't need to do anything on their end.[1]
  2. Decide how many backups you want to keep. More backups means more restore points to go back to.[1]
  3. Decide on a storage cap so backups never eat your whole disk. Because the oldest files are deleted first, you always keep the newest ones.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any craftable items, quests, in-game tooltips or config option names for this mod in this pack, so there are no recipes to show here. Check the mod's config file on your server to see the exact settings and defaults the pack uses for the schedule, backup count and storage limit.

How does Simple Backups work?

4 parts

Simple Backups is a mod for creating scheduled backups. You tell it how many backups to keep and how much storage they may use, and the oldest backup files are deleted to stay within those limits. It can be used on a server only, and in this pack you control it through config files.[1][3]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe any blocks, items, machines or automation hooks for this mod, so I can't say whether it adds any in-world content beyond its config.

When backups happen

The schedule is set by timer, which is the time between two backups in minutes. In this pack it is 120. enabled is true in this pack; set it to false and no backups are made at all.[3]

noPlayerBackups is false in this pack. That option controls whether backups are created even when nobody is online, so with it off the mod doesn't create backups while the server is empty.[3]

useTickCounter is false here, so the timer follows real world time. If you turn it on, the timer is converted to ticks instead. A lagging server then stretches the gap between backups; the config notes that an average of 10 FPS doubles the time between them.[3]

Backup types

backupType has three options. FULL_BACKUPS always creates a full backup, and that is what this pack uses. MODIFIED_SINCE_LAST saves only files changed since the last (partial) backup. MODIFIED_SINCE_FULL saves all files changed after the last full backup.[3]

fullBackupTimer only matters if you switch to one of the modified-only types. It sets how many minutes pass before a new full backup is made at the next backup. The pack's value is 525,960, which the config describes as the default of once a year.[3]

Storage and cleanup

  • backupsToKeep is the maximum number of backup files to keep. The pack sets it to 10.[3]
  • maxDiskSize caps the backup folder's storage, and old files are deleted if it goes over. The pack sets it to 25 GB. Write it as a number, a space, then a unit: B, KB, MB, GB or TB.[3]
  • outputPath is where backups are written. The pack uses "simplebackups".[3]
  • createSubDirs is true in this pack, so each world gets its own sub-directory. The limits above, including the backup count and disk size, are then calculated for each sub-directory.[3]
  • compressionLevel ranges from -1 to 9. 0 means no compression (less CPU, a lot more space) and 9 is the best compression (most CPU, less space). The pack uses -1, the default.[3]
Tip: Because the 10-backup limit and the 25 GB limit are both calculated per world sub-directory while sub-directories are on, the total space used can be higher than 25 GB if you have several worlds.[3]

Messages and permissions

sendMessages is true, so a message is sent when a backup is in the making. In the server config, messagesForEveryone is also true, so every player gets that message. If you turn it off, only players with permission level 2 or higher receive it.[3][4]

mod_compat.mc2discord is true in this pack. It is meant to send backup notifications to Discord through the mc2discord mod, which the config says needs to be installed separately.[3]

commandsCheatsDisabled is false here. It decides whether the mod's commands work without cheats enabled. The config recommends changing it mainly for single player, since otherwise every user on a server could trigger them.[4]

Which Simple Backups config options matter?

3 parts

Simple Backups has two config files in this pack: a common one with the schedule and storage rules, and a server one with message and command permissions. Here are the options you're most likely to touch, with the exact values the pack ships.[3][4]

How often and how many

  • enabled is true, so backups are on. If you set it to false, no backups are made.[3]
  • timer is 120. That's the time between two backups, in minutes.[3]
  • useTickCounter is false, so the timer follows real world time. If you turn it on, the timer is counted in ticks, and a lagging server will stretch the gap between backups.[3]
  • backupsToKeep is 10, the maximum number of backup files kept.[3]
  • maxDiskSize is "25 GB". If the backup folder grows past that, old files are deleted. Write it as a number, a space, then the unit (B, KB, MB, GB or TB).[3]
  • noPlayerBackups is false. The option's description is "Create backups, even if nobody is online", so it's off here.[3]

Backup type and compression

  • backupType is "FULL_BACKUPS", so every backup is a full one. The other allowed values are MODIFIED_SINCE_LAST and MODIFIED_SINCE_FULL.[3]
  • fullBackupTimer is 525960 minutes. It only applies when you save modified files instead of full backups, and it sets how often a fresh full backup is made. The option's description says the default is once a year.[3]
  • compressionLevel is -1, which the option's description calls the default. 0 means no compression and 9 is the best compression, at the cost of more CPU.[3]

Location, messages and integrations

  • outputPath is "simplebackups", where the backups are written.[3]
  • createSubDirs is true, so each world gets its own sub-directory. The description warns that the keep-count and size limit are then calculated for each sub-directory separately.[3]
  • sendMessages is true, so a message is sent while a backup is being made. messagesForEveryone is also true, so every player gets it. If you turn that off, only players with permission level 2 and higher see the message.[3][4]
  • mod_compat.mc2discord is true, so backup notifications go to Discord when mc2discord is installed.[3]
  • commandsCheatsDisabled is false, so the commands need cheats enabled. The description says that if you set it to true, all users on a server can trigger the commands.[4]
Watch out: Only turn on commandsCheatsDisabled for single player. On a server it would let every user trigger the backup commands.[4]

Unverified The sources only show the values this pack uses, not a full list of the mod's defaults. Apart from the compression level and the yearly full-backup interval, which the option descriptions call defaults, I can't confirm which of these values the pack changed.

What changed in Simple Backups between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 0.51 ships Simple Backups 1.21-4.0.6. The mod has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier, so you may already have it in an older install.[2]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 1.21-4.0.4: Traditional Chinese (zh_tw) translation added.[5]
  • 1.21-4.0.6: a tick counter option was added. This is the version the pack currently uses.[2][6]

I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't say whether the pack itself changed anything about Simple Backups. The changes above come only from the mod's own changelogs.[2]
