What is Rainbows?
1 part
Rainbows is an atmospheric mod that adds single and double rainbows to the sky after rain showers. If you like a bit of wonder in your skies while you explore, this is the mod doing it.[1]
The rainbows can be customized. The mod supports changing their size, their distance and their transparency, and you can also choose which dimensions or biomes they can appear in.[1]
In this pack
This pack includes Rainbows version 1.3. It was first included in an earlier release of the pack, version 1.20 or before, so it has been around for a long time.[2]
Unverified The sources I have do not show whether this pack changes any of the mod's settings, so check the config files in your own instance if you want to know the exact values in use.
How do you get started with Rainbows?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: there is nothing to craft to get started with Rainbows. The mod just adds new rainbows to the world, so you don't need to gather anything first.[1]
You'll see both single and double rainbows appear in the sky after rain showers. Once the weather clears, look up.[1]
What you can tweak
Parts of the rainbow can be customized through the mod's configuration. These are the options the mod advertises:[1]
- The size of the rainbow (the project page says the mod currently supports this).[1]
- The distance the rainbow appears at (the project page says the mod currently supports this).[1]
- The transparency of the rainbow (the project page says the mod currently supports this).[1]
- Which dimensions the rainbow can appear in.[1]
- Which biomes the rainbow can appear in.[1]
Unverified This pack has no recipes, quests or items tied to the mod that I can confirm. I also can't confirm the exact config file or option names, or whether the pack changes any default values. Check the mod's config file in your instance before relying on specific settings.
How does Rainbows work?
6 parts
Rainbows is a purely atmospheric mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to learn here. It adds single and double rainbows that appear after rain showers, and everything you can tune is a config value. Nothing in the material available for this pack describes any machine or item behavior for it.[1]
One config file per dimension
The pack ships a separate rainbow profile for each place where rainbows can show up. The Overworld profile is limited to the dimension minecraft:overworld, and the Aether profile is limited to aether:the_aether. These are set with allowedDimensions and allowedDimensions.[3][4]
Both profiles also have a biome filter, allowedBiomes and allowedBiomes. In this pack both lists are empty. The mod page says rainbows can be restricted by biome as well as by dimension.[1][3][4]
In this pack the Overworld and Aether profiles have identical values for every other option, so rainbows look the same in both dimensions unless you edit one of the files.[3][4]
Size, distance and look of the main rainbow
- rainbowWidthDeg and rainbowHeightDeg are both 42. The Aether equivalents, rainbowWidthDeg and rainbowHeightDeg, are also 42.[3][4]
- rainbowDistance is 500. rainbowHeightOffset is 0.[4]
- rainbowThickness is 0.98 and rainbowSpeed is 1.[4]
- rainbowAlpha is 0.4. Alpha is the transparency setting the mod page mentions.[1][4]
The double rainbow
The second, fainter rainbow has its own set of options. In the pack, rainbowDoubleWidthDeg and rainbowDoubleHeightDeg are both 52, so it is larger than the main rainbow. rainbowDoubleThickness is 1.01 and rainbowDoubleSpeed is 0.001. rainbowDoubleAlpha is 0.2, half the main rainbow's 0.4.[4]
Per-color transparency
Each color band has its own alpha value. Red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and violet are all 0.5 in this pack, while white is 0.25. For example, see alphaRed, alphaViolet and alphaWhite. The Aether profile uses the same values.[3][4]
Render detail and performance
The startup config has General.rainbowDetail, which controls the resolution the rainbow renders at. A lower value means lower resolution and quality but more FPS. The pack keeps this at 150, which is the mod default. General.globalDetailOverride is a global toggle for controlling rainbow detail, and it is set to false in the pack.[5]
The per-dimension files also carry a detail value. rainbowDetail and rainbowDetail are both 50. If rainbows cost you frames, lowering the detail value is the setting the config describes for trading quality for FPS.[3][4][5]
Unverified The sources do not say how the global detail override interacts with the per-dimension detail values. They also do not say what an empty biome list means in practice, or what the units of the size, speed and thickness values are.
Config auto-updating
General.globalShouldAutoUpdate is true in the pack. When it is true, the configs update on every mod update. Set it to false if you want to manage config changes yourself. Each dimension file also has its own shouldAutoUpdate flag, set to true, and a version value of 1.3.[3][4][5]
Which Rainbows config options matter?
2 parts
Rainbows keeps its settings in two places: a startup file and one JSON file per dimension. This pack ships a file for the Overworld and one for the Aether. The mod lets you customize rainbow size, distance, transparency, and which dimensions or biomes they can appear in.[1][3][4][5]
Startup file
- General.rainbowDetail is 150 in this pack, which is also the mod default. It sets the resolution the rainbow renders at. Lower values mean lower quality but more FPS.[5]
- General.globalDetailOverride is false in this pack. It is described as a global toggle for controlling rainbow detail.[5]
- General.globalShouldAutoUpdate is true in this pack. That means the configs update every mod update. Set it to false if you want to manage config changes yourself.[5]
Per-dimension files
The Overworld file and the Aether file use the same values for everything except the dimension. The Overworld file allows rainbows in minecraft:overworld through allowedDimensions. The Aether file allows aether:the_aether through allowedDimensions. In both files the biome list, allowedBiomes, is empty.[3][4]
- Detail: rainbowDetail is 50 in both dimension files.[3][4]
- Distance: rainbowDistance is 500.[3][4]
- Transparency: rainbowAlpha is 0.4 for the main rainbow, and rainbowDoubleAlpha is 0.2 for the double rainbow.[3][4]
- Colour bands: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue and violet each use an alpha of 0.5, while alphaWhite is 0.25.[3][4]
- Size: rainbowHeightDeg and rainbowWidthDeg are both 42. The double rainbow uses 52 for both rainbowDoubleHeightDeg and rainbowDoubleWidthDeg.[3][4]
- Thickness: rainbowThickness is 0.98, and rainbowDoubleThickness is 1.01.[3][4]
- Speed: rainbowSpeed is 1, and rainbowDoubleSpeed is 0.001.[3][4]
- Auto-update: shouldAutoUpdate is true in both files, and the file version is 1.3.[3][4]
Unverified The sources don't list mod defaults for the per-dimension JSON values, so it isn't confirmed which of them this pack changed. It's also unconfirmed how the startup detail setting interacts with the 50 detail value in each dimension file, and what an empty biome list means in practice.
What changed in Rainbows between versions?
2 parts
All the Mods 10 2.12 ships Rainbows 1.3. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.20 or earlier, so you may have already seen older versions of it. Here are the changes the mod's own changelogs list.[2]
Rainbows 1.3
- A new automatic config updater. Whenever a new version of the mod comes around, it updates the configs for you.[6]
- You can turn auto updating off for a single config by setting "shouldAutoUpdate" to false inside that config. To handle updates yourself everywhere, set globalShouldAutoUpdate to false in the normal config file.[6]
- Easing functions now apply when you enter and leave biomes from the allowed biomes list config. Rainbows no longer pop in or vanish suddenly from the sky.[6]
Rainbows 1.2.2
- Updated the version requirements for the optional mods.[7]
- Fixed a rare issue. The changelog doesn't say what it was.[7]
Unverified Pack changelog entries for Rainbows were not available, so changes the pack itself made to this mod between releases are unconfirmed.
