Mob Grinding Utils is a mod in All the Mods 10 8.3, where it is version 1.1.10+mc1.21.1. A Mod that adds fun ways to make mob farms (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mob Grinding Utils?

3 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is a mob farming mod, and this pack ships version 1.1.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack.[1][2]

It's for you if you want to set up mob farms and get Spawn Eggs without relying on luck. The pack's quests point you at two features in particular: the Entity Spawner and the Mob Swab.[2][3]

The Entity Spawner

The Entity Spawner needs three things to work: a Spawn Egg, XP Jelly Babies, and a Redstone signal. Put the Spawn Egg in the top slot and the Jelly Babies in the second slot, and once it gets a Redstone signal it starts spawning mobs.[2]

You make the Jelly Babies by running XP through an XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. They can be eaten, or used as fuel in the spawner's second slot.[2]

Getting Spawn Eggs with the Swab

The quest book calls the Mob Swab its favorite way to get Spawn Eggs. You right click a mob with the Swab, then use it to craft GM Chicken Feed. Feed that to a Chicken and you get the Spawn Egg, but the Chicken doesn't survive. Not every mob can be swabbed.[2][3]

Tip: The quest text says any type of XP Fluid works for making the Chicken Feed, so use whichever one you have.[2][3]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack covers the mod in two quest chapters. The Entity Spawner quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" and the Swab quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" are in the Apothic Spawners chapter. The Swab tip is repeated in the Tips and Tricks chapter a quest in "Tips and Tricks".[2][3]

Unverified The sources don't show Mob Grinding Utils on the ATM Star quest path, and they don't say whether the pack changed any of its recipes or configs.

How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is all about mob farming, and this pack even has quests that point you toward its Entity Spawner. Here is the order I'd go in: first ways to kill mobs, then moving and containing them, then the XP side, then spawn eggs and the spawner.[2]

Step one: kill something with Iron Spikes

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP. Mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills, so keep that in mind.[4][5]

Step two: upgrade to the Mob Masher

The Mob Masher is the advanced, modular mob grinder, and you can enhance it with Mob Masher Upgrades. Unlike spikes, mobs it mashes do count as player kills.[5]

Step three: move and contain your mobs

The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces and can be modified with Mob Fan Upgrades. Tinted Glass lets you see inside your farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers.[4][5]

Step four: store the XP

Start with a Singularity Tank. The XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns Fluid XP back into orbs, which is handy once you have XP stored.[4][5]

Step five: get Spawn Eggs with a Swab

The pack has quests for this trick: a quest in "Tips and Tricks" and a quest in "Apothic Spawners". Right click a mob with the Mob Swab, craft GM Chicken Feed with the used swab, then feed it to a Chicken. The Chicken won't survive, but you get Spawn Eggs. Not all mobs can be swabbed.[2][3][4]

Step six: build the Entity Spawner chain

The Entity Spawner needs a Spawn Egg in the top slot, XP Jelly Babies in the second slot, and a Redstone signal. It spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. Jelly Babies come from running XP through an XP Solidifier with an XP Mould Jelly Baby, and the solidifier needs Fluid XP in its tank. a quest in "Apothic Spawners" walks you through this.[2][5]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is built around a simple loop: spawn mobs, move them where you want, kill them, then collect the drops and the XP. This section walks through how each machine does its part, using only what the pack's text and recipes confirm.[5]

Killing mobs

The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular grinder. Kills it makes DO count as player kills, so you still get player-only drops. You can enhance it with Mob Masher upgrades.[5]

The tooltips give each upgrade's maximum as a placeholder, so the exact caps for the Masher upgrades are not confirmed here.[5]

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes DO NOT count as player kills. That is the key trade-off between spikes and the Masher.[4][5]

Moving mobs

The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces. You can toggle its area of effect in its GUI, and upgrades reshape it.[5]

Spawning mobs

The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in its top slot and is fuelled by Solid XP Jelly Babies. XP Speed Upgrades and Spawner Height/Width Upgrades enhance it. Each Height or Width upgrade gives +1, with a max of 5. You can toggle the area of effect and offset its position in the GUI.[4][5]

If you would rather boost natural spawns, the pack has two dirt types. Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs, and a light level below 10 stops those spawns. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, and a light level of 5 and above stops those spawns. Delightful Dirt does not work in ocean biomes.[5]

The Golden Egg creates a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt, and the Rotten Egg creates a 5x5 area of Dreadful Dirt. Both are used on Grass, Dirt, Mycelium or Farmland.[5]

Collecting drops and XP

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can configure it to push out on any side. Fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories. Each Absorption Radius Upgrade adds +1 to the radius, with a max of 6, and you can toggle the area and offset the position in its GUI.[4][5]

XP collected this way is handled as a fluid. The Jumbo Tank is a larger version of the Singularity Tank and holds 1,024 buckets of any liquid. An XP Tap attached to the side of a tank turns fluid XP back into orbs.[4][5]

Solidifying XP

Controlling the farm

  • Ender Inhibitor Active inhibits teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It can be attached to any side of solid blocks, and right-clicking toggles it.[4][5]
  • Ender Dragon Death Muffler stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius, and right-clicking hides the boss bar.[4][5]
  • The Wither Muffler stops Wither death sounds within an 8 block radius and also hides the boss bar on right-click.[5]
  • Tinted Glass lets you see inside the farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers.[5]

Unverified The sources do not say whether any of these machines need power, how fast they work, or what the Singularity Tank's capacity is. No config files for this mod are available either, so the values above are only the ones shown in the tooltips.

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?

4 parts

Mob Grinding Utils has no formal tier system in this pack that I can confirm. The pack's quests do give you a clear path, though, and it runs from getting Spawn Eggs, to making XP Jelly Babies, to building the Entity Spawner. This section follows that path.[2][3]

Step 1: Get Spawn Eggs with the Mob Swab

The pack's quest a quest in "Tips and Tricks" in Tips and Tricks, repeated as a quest in "Apothic Spawners" in Apothic Spawners, points you to the Mob Swab as the way to get Spawn Eggs. Right-click a mob with the swab, then use the used swab to craft GM Chicken Feed. Feed that to a Chicken and you get a Spawn Egg. The Chicken doesn't survive, and not every mob can be swabbed.[2][3][4]

Unverified The quest text mentions a bucket of XP fluid for the chicken feed, but the recipe listing for the feed shows only the used swab and seeds. Trust the recipe shown above for what the pack actually requires.

Step 2: Make XP Jelly Babies

The Entity Spawner quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" asks you to get the XP Solidifier and the XP Mould Jelly Baby. You make XP Jelly Babies by processing XP through the solidifier with that mould. You can eat them, or use them as fuel in the spawner's second slot.[2]

  1. Craft an XP Mould Blank.[4]
  2. Turn the blank into the XP Mould Jelly Baby with a shapeless crafting recipe.[4]
  3. Craft the XP Solidifier. It needs an Entity Conveyor and a Singularity Tank as parts, so make those first.[4]
  4. Run XP through the solidifier with the Jelly Baby mould to get an XP Jelly Baby.[4]

Step 3: Build the Entity Spawner

The Entity Spawner needs 3 things to work: a Spawn Egg in the top slot, XP Jelly Babies in the second slot, and a Redstone signal. Once all three are in place, it starts spawning mobs.[2]

After the quests

The sources give no quests or ordering beyond the Entity Spawner, so what follows is not an official progression. The pack does have recipes for further upgrades and machines, such as the Entity Spawner Width Upgrade, Entity Spawner Height Upgrade and XP Speed Upgrade. It also has the Mob Masher, the Mob Fan and the Absorption Hopper. Pick them up as your farm needs them.[4]

Tip: Swabbing is the pack quest's recommended route to Spawn Eggs, so do it before you build the spawner. The spawner is useless without an egg in its top slot.[2][3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mob Grinding Utils?

3 parts

Mob Grinding Utils shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: Apothic Spawners, with two quests, and Tips and Tricks, with one. Between them they cover two things: how to run the mod's spawner, and how to get Spawn Eggs with a Mob Swab.[2][3]

Apothic Spawners

The first quest, a quest in "Apothic Spawners", is about the mod's own spawner. You hand in the Entity Spawner, the XP Solidifier and the XP Mould Jelly Baby. It comes after another quest in the chapter (0F0E227FC3EC0D90), which doesn't involve this mod.[2]

The quest says the Entity Spawner needs 3 things to work: a Spawn Egg, XP Jelly Babies and a Redstone signal. You make the Jelly Babies by running XP through the XP Solidifier with the Jelly Baby mould. They can be eaten, or used as fuel in the spawner's second slot.[2]

  1. Put the Spawn Egg in the top slot of the Entity Spawner.[2]
  2. Put XP Jelly Babies in the second slot.[2]
  3. Apply a Redstone signal, and the spawner starts spawning the mobs.[2]

The second quest, a quest in "Apothic Spawners", is about getting those Spawn Eggs. It asks for the Mob Swab and the GM Chicken Feed. It unlocks after another quest in the chapter (78E94C386B1E7359), which also doesn't involve this mod.[2]

The method: right click a mob with the Swab, craft Chicken Feed using that Swab, then feed it to a Chicken. The quest says any type of XP Fluid works for the Chicken Feed. The Chicken doesn't survive, but you get a Spawn Egg. Not every mob can be swabbed.[2]

Watch out: Feeding the Chicken the special feed kills it. The quest says this plainly, so don't use a chicken you want to keep.[2]

Tips and Tricks

This chapter has a matching quest, a quest in "Tips and Tricks", titled "A way to get Spawn Eggs". It asks for the same two items, the Mob Swab and the GM Chicken Feed, and describes the same method. It lists no prerequisite quest, so you can take it whenever you like.[3]

Suggested order

The sources don't say whether the two Apothic Spawners quests depend on each other. Each one lists a separate prerequisite quest in that chapter. A sensible route is to learn the Swab method first, since the spawner needs a Spawn Egg, and then build the Entity Spawner. That ordering is my suggestion, not something the quest chapter enforces.[2]

What changed in Mob Grinding Utils between versions?

1 part

Here's how Mob Grinding Utils has moved along through the pack's releases. The pack changelogs only record version bumps, so they don't say what changed inside the mod itself.[6][7][8]
