What is Mahou Tsukai?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta guide

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod that cares more about how spells look and feel than about how you create them. Instead of a long crafting chain for spellcasting, the focus is on special effects and making each spell unique. Many spells are inspired by Fate/Stay Night and other media, but you don't need to know any of it to enjoy the mod.[1]

This pack includes version 26.1.2-v1.36.36 of the mod.[2]

How the mod is designed

  • It avoids overlapping with vanilla or other mods, so there is no "magic bonemeal" or "magic flint and steel".[1]
  • Spells don't compete with each other. There are no tiers and no progression apart from mana, so even the most basic spells stay useful or fun.[1]
  • There is no worldgen apart from a custom dimension. Nothing in the mod is gated behind custom worldgen, which is why it is easy to add to existing worlds.[1]

Configuration

Almost everything in the mod is configurable: mana costs, mana regen, sound effect volume, rendering, spell sizes and effects, and how often certain spells tick. A single spell often has 5 configs. If a spell lags or does something you don't like, you can usually tone it down a lot through its config.[1]

How do you get started with Mahou Tsukai?

5 parts

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod built around unique spells and special effects. It has no spell tiers and no progression except mana, so you can pick whichever spell looks fun. The order below is a practical way to get your first tools together.[1]

Craft the guidebook

Start with the Mahou Tsukai Knowledge Compendium. Its entries cover topics like boundaries and catalysts, so it's the quickest way to learn what the mod offers. This is the mod's own recipe, and the pack hasn't changed it.[3][4]

Make a Hammer

Next, make the Hammer. Powdered catalysts are made by smashing catalyst items with a Hammer or a Mortar and Pestle. The Hammer recipe is also the mod's own, unchanged by the pack.[3][4]

Smash your catalysts

The mod has seven catalysts, one for each category of magic. The guidebook lists them like this:[4]

  • Iron: Boundaries[4]
  • Ender Pearl: Displacement[4]
  • Diamond: Projection[4]
  • Emerald: Exchange[4]
  • Gold: Mystic[4]
  • Quartz: Intelligence[4]
  • Ender Eye: Mystic Eyes[4]

The pack changed the recipes for Powdered Iron, Powdered Gold, Powdered Diamond and Powdered Emerald. Powdered Ender, Powdered Eye and Powdered Quartz keep the mod's recipes. Here are two to start with:[3]

Dagger and Spell Cloth

The Dagger is how you make Spell Cloth, and Spell Cloth shows up in several other recipes, including the Mystic Code and both projectors. The Dagger recipe is changed by the pack. The Spell Cloth recipe is the mod's own.[3]

How does Mahou Tsukai work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod about spell uniqueness and special effects rather than about how spells are made. In this pack you work with magic circles you place, scrolls you use, and a mana system. The author says there are no tiers and no progression apart from mana, and that nearly everything is configurable: mana costs, regen, spell sizes and effects, and how often spells tick.[1][5]

Catalysts and powders

Seven catalysts each stand for one category of magic. You turn them into powdered catalysts by smashing them with a Hammer or a Mortar and Pestle.[5]

The pack changes the recipes for the iron, gold, diamond and emerald powders, and for the Mortar and Pestle's two parts (the Mortar and the Pestle). The Ender, Eye and Quartz powders and the Hammer keep the mod's own recipes.[6]

Mana circuits

Mana Circuits are blocks that store mana. You can draw on that mana while you're nearby, as long as you own the block. Whoever right-clicks a circuit first after it's placed becomes its owner. Right-click to put mana in, and shift-right-click to turn it on or off.[5]

If you want other players to use your circuit, right-click it with Fae Essence to open it up.[5]

The pack also changes the recipe for the Magitech Mana Circuit, so don't rely on the mod's default.[6]

Boundaries

Boundaries are area-of-effect spells that work in a radius around a placed circle, and they drain mana on a fixed basis. Right-click one to switch it on or off, and a redstone signal inverts its on/off state. Boundary scrolls let you place boundaries quickly somewhere else.[5]

For redstone automation, boundaries give a comparator output of 0 when off and 1 when on. The Alarm Boundary is the exception: it outputs 15 while it detects anything inside its range. It alerts you to mobs and players entering that range.[5]

In the pack's server config, each boundary has a cycle (how often it does its thing), a mana cost (per cycle), a mana cycle (how often it drains mana) and a radius. Here are the values this pack uses, one option at a time.[7]

Tip: If a boundary lags your world or does something you don't like, adjust its entries in the server config. The mod's author says there are often around 5 config options for a single spell, so it's a good first step.[1]

Displacement circles and scrolls

Displacement is the teleportation category. Ascension, used without a cloth, teleports anything on top of the circle (items and mobs included) to the highest solid Y value it can find. The scroll version only moves the caster.[5]

  • Ascension: the circle checks for things to teleport on a cycle of 4. The scroll costs 30 mana, which is also the cost per teleport when it isn't a scroll.[7]
  • Equivalent Displacement: 60 mana per teleport, a 15 cooldown between teleports so you don't get shot back and forth, and dimensional travel is allowed (true). Max distance is set to -1.[7]
  • Ordered Displacement: 40 mana per teleport, a cooldown of 15, and circles can be up to 20 apart.[7]
  • Mental Displacement: the scroll costs 300 mana, and you're sent back to your body if you go further than 20.[7]
  • Projectile Displacement and Protective Displacement: each scroll costs 50 mana.[7]

Exchange and group circles

  • Alchemical Exchange: about once a day around the time you placed it, it converts natural blocks underneath into random other blocks of the same class (dirt may become sand, diamonds may become emeralds). It ignores crafted blocks such as bricks or diamond blocks.[5]
  • Catalyst Exchange: placed on the floor, it converts powdered catalysts on top of it into a new random powdered catalyst.[5]
  • Chronal Exchange: generates mana for 12 hours, centered on the time of placement. For the other 12 hours it drains mana from the caster, gems or mana circuits. Skipping time only delays the cycle.[5]
  • Contract: two players each make a contract circle and stand on them nearby. The contract lets them bypass certain effects such as boundaries and some mystic eyes, and one player breaks it by damaging the other.[5]

The Cup of Heaven is the most complex spell, used to apply mass negative effects. You place many of its circles and activate them with a scroll. The mod works out the outer convex polygon, and the prime factors of the outer and inner circle counts decide the effects. Everything inside the polygon at activation gets them.[5]

The prime factors map like this: 2 is Poison, 3 is Weakness, 5 is Blindness, 7 is Slowness, 11 is Wither and 13 is Levitation. A pentagon of 5 circles with 4 inside gives Poison 2 and Blindness 1. For Poison 1 and Wither 1, build a 22-sided polygon. Mana cost depends on the effects and area covered.[5]

How do you progress through Mahou Tsukai?

5 parts

Mahou Tsukai has no official tier ladder in this pack. What the recipes do give you is a natural crafting order: tools first, then powders, then cloth and attuned materials, then the finished devices. Many of those recipes were changed by the pack, so check the recipe blocks below instead of relying on the mod's defaults.[3]

Unverified No quests in this pack are known to involve this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path. The order below comes only from the crafting recipes, not from quest progression.

Stage 1: Your grinding tools

Everything starts with grinding. The Hammer is the cheap option and uses the mod's own recipe. If you want the nicer setup, the Mortar and Pestle both use recipes changed by the pack, and you then combine them into a Mortar and Pestle.[3]

Stage 2: Powders

Each powder has two recipes, one for the Hammer and one for the Mortar and Pestle, so either tool works. The pack changed the recipes for Powdered Iron, Powdered Gold, Powdered Diamond and Powdered Emerald. Powdered Ender, Powdered Eye and Powdered Quartz keep the mod's recipes.[3]

Stage 3: Dagger, Spell Cloth and Mystic Codes

The Dagger is a pack-changed recipe, and you use it to turn wool into Spell Cloth. Spell Cloth is the base for the Mystic Code and for Mystic Code - First Sorcery. The second one also needs Fae Essence.[3]

How does Mahou Tsukai work with other mods?

1 part

There are no confirmed integrations to list here. I couldn't find any in-pack recipes or quests that mix Mahou Tsukai items with items from other mods, so I won't guess at connections that might not exist.[1]

Unverified No cross-mod recipes and no quests involving Mahou Tsukai were found for this pack. Any link between this mod and other mods in the pack is unverified.

How the mod is designed to coexist

The project page says the mod tries to avoid competing with functionality from other mods or vanilla. It gives "magic bonemeal" and "magic flint and steel" as examples of things it deliberately doesn't add. So it's meant to sit alongside other mods rather than replace what they do.[1]

It also has no worldgen apart from a custom dimension, and none of the mod is gated behind custom worldgen. That's why it can be added to existing worlds easily.[1]

Nearly everything in the mod is configurable, including mana costs, mana regen, spell sizes and effects, and how often certain spells tick. If a spell conflicts with something else in your setup or causes lag, check its configs first. The page notes there are often 5 configs for a single spell.[1]

Which Mahou Tsukai config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Almost everything in Mahou Tsukai is configurable, often with several options per spell. The values below come from config/mahoutsukai-server.toml exactly as this pack ships it. This is a tour of the options you're most likely to care about, not the whole file.[1][7]

Your personal mana

Ley lines

The interesting one is eyes.leylines.LEY_PUNISHMENT, which this pack sets to 0. The option's own description says that by default you lose 1 mana from regen for not being near a leyline, so with this value that penalty is not applied.[7]

Mana storage

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_DIAMOND_CAPACITY]] is 2,000.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_EMERALD_CAPACITY]] is 1,000.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_CAPACITY]] is 20,000.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_MAGITECH_CAPACITY]] is also 20,000.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_RANGE]] is 10, the distance things can be from a Mana Circuit and still use it.[7]

Familiars and Mystic Code

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_CHUNKLOADS]] is true, so your familiar chunk loads.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_HEALTH]] is 10.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.SUMMON_FAMILIAR_MANA_COST]] is 200, the cost of using the scroll.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.FIRST_SORCERY_DURABILITY]] is 15, the durability of the Mystic Code - First Sorcery item.[7]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.MYSTIC_CODE_FIRST_SORCERY_BLACKLIST]] lists Scroll of the Boundary of Drain Life and Scroll of Strengthening, so those two scrolls are blocked from First Sorcery.[7]

Other values worth knowing

Tip: If a Mahou Tsukai spell is laggy or too strong for your taste, check its config entries first. The mod's own page says there's often a way to tone it down, including how often certain spells tick.[1]
