What is Mahou Tsukai?

2 parts

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod built around spell uniqueness and special effects, rather than around how spells get created. Many spells are inspired by Fate/Stay Night and similar media, but you don't need to know any of it to enjoy the mod.[1]

The pack ships version 1.21.0-v1.35.42, and the mod has been here since 2.2 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It suits you if you want a handful of distinctive spells rather than a tiered ladder. The mod's stated design has no tiers and no progression except mana, and every spell is meant to be useful or fun in some situation, even the basic ones. It adds no worldgen apart from a custom dimension, and none of it is gated behind that dimension.[1]

Nearly everything is configurable, including mana costs, mana regen, sound volume, rendering and spell sizes. A single spell can have around 5 configs. If a spell lags or does something you dislike, check its config before anything else.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack has a dedicated quest chapter for the mod. It walks you through the basic tools first, then powdered materials, then the larger items.[3]

Unverified Nothing in the available sources places this mod on the ATM Star path, and there is no in-jar guidebook to check, so don't count on it for that goal.

How do you get started with Mahou Tsukai?

5 parts

Welcome to Mahou Tsukai! This mod is about unique spells and special effects rather than tiers, so there is no spell ladder to climb. What you do need early on is a handful of crafted tools and powdered catalysts. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]

First, grab the guidebook

Start with the Mahou Tsukai Knowledge Compendium. It's the Mahou Tsukai Knowledge Compendium, and its pages cover the mod's spell categories and catalysts, so it's worth having on you from the start.[4][5]

Second, make something to smash catalysts

The mod has seven catalysts, one for each category of magic. You turn them into powders by smashing them with a Hammer or a Mortar and Pestle.[4][5]

The pack's quest chapter asks for the Mortar and Pestle, which is built from a Mortar and a Pestle. The pack changed both of those recipes, so check them below.[3][4]

Tip: Every powder has a recipe for the Hammer and another for the Mortar and Pestle, so you can start with the Hammer and switch over when you reach the quest for the Mortar and Pestle: a quest in "?".[3][4]

Third, powder your first catalysts

Each powder is tied to a category of magic. Iron is boundaries, ender pearl is displacement, diamond is projection, emerald is exchange, gold is mystic, quartz is intelligence and ender eye is mystic eyes. The pack changed the powdered iron, gold, diamond and emerald recipes. Here is powdered iron as an example.[4][5]

Several early quests ask you to hand in powders, such as a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", so powdering is good practice.[3]

Fourth, the Dagger and Spell Cloth

Next, make the Dagger. The pack changed its recipe. You then use the Dagger to make a Spell Cloth. Cloth is needed by several later quests and by items like the Mystic Code.[3][4]

Fifth, the Attuner and Attuned Emerald

The Attuner has its own quest, a quest in "?", and the pack changed its recipe. Use it on an emerald to make an Attuned Emerald, which is the task of a quest in "?". That recipe was changed by the pack too.[3][4]

How does Mahou Tsukai work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Mahou Tsukai is a magic mod about spell uniqueness and special effects rather than about how spells are made. In this pack you work with magic circles you place, scrolls you use, and a mana system. The author says there are no tiers and no progression apart from mana, and that nearly everything is configurable: mana costs, regen, spell sizes and effects, and how often spells tick.[1][6]

Catalysts and powders

Seven catalysts each stand for one category of magic. You turn them into powdered catalysts by smashing them with a Hammer or a Mortar and Pestle.[6]

The pack changes the recipes for the iron, gold, diamond and emerald powders, and for the Mortar and Pestle's two parts (the Mortar and the Pestle). The Ender, Eye and Quartz powders and the Hammer keep the mod's own recipes.[7]

Mana circuits

Mana Circuits are blocks that store mana. You can draw on that mana while you're nearby, as long as you own the block. Whoever right-clicks a circuit first after it's placed becomes its owner. Right-click to put mana in, and shift-right-click to turn it on or off.[6]

If you want other players to use your circuit, right-click it with Fae Essence to open it up.[6]

The pack also changes the recipe for the Magitech Mana Circuit, so don't rely on the mod's default.[7]

Boundaries

Boundaries are area-of-effect spells that work in a radius around a placed circle, and they drain mana on a fixed basis. Right-click one to switch it on or off, and a redstone signal inverts its on/off state. Boundary scrolls let you place boundaries quickly somewhere else.[6]

For redstone automation, boundaries give a comparator output of 0 when off and 1 when on. The Alarm Boundary is the exception: it outputs 15 while it detects anything inside its range. It alerts you to mobs and players entering that range.[6]

In the pack's server config, each boundary has a cycle (how often it does its thing), a mana cost (per cycle), a mana cycle (how often it drains mana) and a radius. Here are the values this pack uses, one option at a time.[8]

Tip: If a boundary lags your world or does something you don't like, adjust its entries in the server config. The mod's author says there are often around 5 config options for a single spell, so it's a good first step.[1]

Displacement circles and scrolls

Displacement is the teleportation category. Ascension, used without a cloth, teleports anything on top of the circle (items and mobs included) to the highest solid Y value it can find. The scroll version only moves the caster.[6]

  • Ascension: the circle checks for things to teleport on a cycle of 4. The scroll costs 30 mana, which is also the cost per teleport when it isn't a scroll.[8]
  • Equivalent Displacement: 60 mana per teleport, a 15 cooldown between teleports so you don't get shot back and forth, and dimensional travel is allowed (true). Max distance is set to -1.[8]
  • Ordered Displacement: 40 mana per teleport, a cooldown of 15, and circles can be up to 20 apart.[8]
  • Mental Displacement: the scroll costs 300 mana, and you're sent back to your body if you go further than 20.[8]
  • Projectile Displacement and Protective Displacement: each scroll costs 50 mana.[8]

Exchange and group circles

  • Alchemical Exchange: about once a day around the time you placed it, it converts natural blocks underneath into random other blocks of the same class (dirt may become sand, diamonds may become emeralds). It ignores crafted blocks such as bricks or diamond blocks.[6]
  • Catalyst Exchange: placed on the floor, it converts powdered catalysts on top of it into a new random powdered catalyst.[6]
  • Chronal Exchange: generates mana for 12 hours, centered on the time of placement. For the other 12 hours it drains mana from the caster, gems or mana circuits. Skipping time only delays the cycle.[6]
  • Contract: two players each make a contract circle and stand on them nearby. The contract lets them bypass certain effects such as boundaries and some mystic eyes, and one player breaks it by damaging the other.[6]

The Cup of Heaven is the most complex spell, used to apply mass negative effects. You place many of its circles and activate them with a scroll. The mod works out the outer convex polygon, and the prime factors of the outer and inner circle counts decide the effects. Everything inside the polygon at activation gets them.[6]

The prime factors map like this: 2 is Poison, 3 is Weakness, 5 is Blindness, 7 is Slowness, 11 is Wither and 13 is Levitation. A pentagon of 5 circles with 4 inside gives Poison 2 and Blindness 1. For Poison 1 and Wither 1, build a 22-sided polygon. Mana cost depends on the effects and area covered.[6]

How do you progress through Mahou Tsukai?

5 parts

The Mahou Tsukai quest chapter in this pack works like a crafting ladder. You start with a few basic tools, then hand in powdered gems and metals, and those lead on to staffs, a bow and the big named items. Quest titles are blank in the book, so each quest is pointed to by the item it asks for.[3]

Tier 1: Starter tools

Three quests open the chapter side by side, and all three unlock after the same earlier quest. a quest in "?" asks for the Mortar and Pestle, a quest in "?" asks for the Attuner, and a quest in "?" asks for a Spell Cloth and a Dagger.[3]

The pack changed the recipes for the Mortar, the Pestle, the Attuner and the Dagger, so don't rely on the mod's defaults. The Mortar and Pestle and the Spell Cloth use the mod's own recipes.[4]

Tier 3: Staffs, bow and keys

The Spell Cloth quests mix powders with a cloth, and each one leads on to an item quest. The Powdered Ender quest a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", which asks for the Crimson Black Keys of Proximity Projection. A Powdered Gold and Powdered Ender quest, a quest in "?", leads to a quest in "?" and the Mystic Staff of Spatial Disorientation.[3]

Two quests with the same Powdered Gold and Powdered Diamond requirements branch in different directions. a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", which asks for the Mystic Staff of Explosive Mana Condensation. a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", which asks for the Bow of Weapon Projectiles.[3]

Tier 4: Murky Water and the named items

a quest in "?" asks for Murky Water and unlocks after three quests: the attuned emerald quest, the 2 Powdered Diamond and Powdered Emerald quest, and one more quest outside the mod's item quests listed here. Right after it, a quest in "?" asks for Caliburn.[3]

A separate branch is built around three scrolls: Scroll of Damage Exchange, Scroll of Immunity Exchange and Scroll of the Mystic Eyes of Death Collection. Each has its own quest, and all three come before a quest in "?", which asks for the Replica.[3]

The chapter also has quests for Emrys, Clarent, Nobu and Morgan. Each one unlocks after a different earlier quest.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Mahou Tsukai?

7 parts

The mod has a single quest chapter, called "mahou_tsukai". None of its quests have titles, so they are identified by their quest ids below. Every task in the chapter is an item task, so you complete them by getting the listed item into your inventory. The order comes from each quest's prerequisites.[3]

Starting quests

Three quests unlock together after the same earlier quest, and that earlier quest is not listed in the chapter data I have. They are a quest in "?" for the Mortar and Pestle, a quest in "?" for the Attuner, and a quest in "?", which asks for a Spell Cloth and a Dagger. Most of the chapter builds on these three.[3]

Powders and attuning

After the Attuner quest, a quest in "?" asks for an Attuned Emerald. The Mortar and Pestle quest opens the powder quests, which ask for items like Powdered Iron, Powdered Emerald, Powdered Diamond and Powdered Quartz.[3]

Spell cloth powder quests

These quests need both the Mortar and Pestle quest and the Spell Cloth and Dagger quest. Each one asks for a Spell Cloth plus a mix of powders.[3]

Staffs, bow and keys

Each of these quests follows one of the spell cloth quests above, and each asks for a single item.[3]

Murky water and Caliburn

a quest in "?" asks for the Murky Water. It needs a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and one more quest that is not covered by the chapter data I have. Once it is done, a quest in "?" asks for Caliburn.[3]

Scrolls and the Replica

Three scroll quests unlock after the same earlier quest, which is not listed in the chapter data: a quest in "?" for the Scroll of Immunity Exchange, a quest in "?" for the Scroll of Damage Exchange, and a quest in "?" for the Scroll of the Mystic Eyes of Death Collection. You need all three before a quest in "?", which asks for the Replica.[3]

Named weapons and staffs

Four quests each ask for one named item and each depends on an earlier quest that is not in the chapter data I have: a quest in "?" for Emrys, a quest in "?" for Clarent, a quest in "?" for Nobu, and a quest in "?" for Morgan.[3]

Unverified The quests in this chapter have no titles or descriptions in the data I have, and several prerequisites sit outside the chapter, so I can't confirm what they unlock beyond the items listed here.

Which Mahou Tsukai config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Almost everything in Mahou Tsukai is configurable, often with several options per spell. The values below come from config/mahoutsukai-server.toml exactly as this pack ships it. This is a tour of the options you're most likely to care about, not the whole file.[1][8]

Your personal mana

Ley lines

The interesting one is eyes.leylines.LEY_PUNISHMENT, which this pack sets to 0. The option's own description says that by default you lose 1 mana from regen for not being near a leyline, so with this value that penalty is not applied.[8]

Mana storage

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_DIAMOND_CAPACITY]] is 2,000.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.ATTUNED_EMERALD_CAPACITY]] is 1,000.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_CAPACITY]] is 20,000.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_MAGITECH_CAPACITY]] is also 20,000.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mana storage.MANA_CIRCUIT_RANGE]] is 10, the distance things can be from a Mana Circuit and still use it.[8]

Familiars and Mystic Code

  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_CHUNKLOADS]] is true, so your familiar chunk loads.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.FAMILIAR_HEALTH]] is 10.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#familiar.summon familiar.SUMMON_FAMILIAR_MANA_COST]] is 200, the cost of using the scroll.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.FIRST_SORCERY_DURABILITY]] is 15, the durability of the Mystic Code - First Sorcery item.[8]
  • [[config:config/mahoutsukai-server.toml#mystic code.MYSTIC_CODE_FIRST_SORCERY_BLACKLIST]] lists Scroll of the Boundary of Drain Life and Scroll of Strengthening, so those two scrolls are blocked from First Sorcery.[8]

Other values worth knowing

Tip: If a Mahou Tsukai spell is laggy or too strong for your taste, check its config entries first. The mod's own page says there's often a way to tone it down, including how often certain spells tick.[1]

What changed in Mahou Tsukai between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Mahou Tsukai 1.21.0-v1.35.42. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so it's a long-time resident.[2]

Version bumps in pack releases

These are the updates recorded in the pack changelogs, oldest first. They all stay on the 1.21.0 line and only move the mod's own version number.[9][10][11][12]

  • All the Mods 10 2.28: updated from 1.21.0-v1.35.36 to 1.21.0-v1.35.39.[12]
  • All the Mods 10 2.29: updated from 1.21.0-v1.35.39 to 1.21.0-v1.35.40.[11]
  • All the Mods 10 2.31: updated from 1.21.0-v1.35.40 to 1.21.0-v1.35.41.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 2.32: updated from 1.21.0-v1.35.41 to 1.21.0-v1.35.42, the version 4.5 still ships.[2][9]

Unverified The pack changelogs only list version numbers, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jars. What actually changed in each Mahou Tsukai update (fixes, new content, balance changes) is unconfirmed here, so check the mod's own release notes before relying on any specific change.
