What is Get It Together, Drops!?

2 parts

Get It Together, Drops! is a small quality-of-life and performance mod that changes how dropped items merge on the ground. Instead of items only stacking when they're practically touching, the mod adds tags and config options that define how far apart dropped items can be and still combine into a single entity.[1]

This pack ships version 1.3.2 of the mod for NeoForge on 1.21, and it has been part of the pack since at least the 0.32 release, so it's been quietly running in the background for most of the pack's life.[2]

Why you want it

Fewer item entities means less work for the server. That matters most in the places modded packs love to create: explosion craters, giant quarry or mining-dimension digs, and mob or crop farms that spit out hundreds of drops at once. If you've ever watched your tick time spike when a big pile of loot hits the floor, this is the mod smoothing that over.[1]

How it behaves

  • The radius option sets how big an area a dropped item searches for other drops to merge with. It accepts anything from 0.5 to 500, where 0.5 is vanilla behaviour, and the search ignores walls between the items.[1]
  • The checkY option decides whether items also look above and below themselves for merge partners. False is vanilla behaviour.[1]
  • Two item tags give per-item control: getittogetherdrops:do_not_combine stops listed items from combining at all, and getittogetherdrops:ignored sends listed items back to vanilla behaviour. The ignored tag wins if an item is in both.[1]

There's nothing to craft, unlock or progress here, and the mod isn't tied to any quests in this pack or to the ATM Star path. It's also server-side friendly: it can run on a server without players installing it, and it works fine in singleplayer too.[1]

Unverified The exact radius and checkY values this pack uses aren't confirmed by the available sources, so don't assume they match the mod's defaults.

How do you get started with Get It Together, Drops!?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.51 guide

Good news: there is nothing to craft here. This mod adds no items, blocks or machines, it only adds tags and configuration options that control how dropped items combine on the ground. That means your "first steps" are about knowing what it does for you rather than building anything.[1]

The point of it is performance. Normally dropped items only merge when they are practically on top of each other, so an explosion crater or a busy farm can leave hundreds of separate item entities lying around. This mod widens that search so nearby drops clump together instead, which can significantly improve performance in exactly those spots.[1]

What it does behind the scenes

  • A radius setting defines how large an area a dropped item searches for other drops to combine with. It accepts values from 0.5 to 500, where 0.5 is vanilla behaviour, and a value of 5.0 means it searches 5 blocks in all directions around the item.[1]
  • A checkY setting decides whether drops also look above and below themselves. Setting it to false is vanilla behaviour.[1]
  • Two item tags give finer control: getittogetherdrops:do_not_combine stops the listed items from combining at all, and getittogetherdrops:ignored makes the listed items fall back to vanilla behaviour. The ignored tag takes precedence over do_not_combine.[1]
Watch out: The combining radius does not take walls into account, so drops can merge through a block or a wall if they are close enough. Keep that in mind if you are sorting loot into separate piles by hand.[1]

It is a server-side mod: it can be installed on a server without players needing it on their client, and it works in singleplayer too. On Forge in 1.15 and newer, the mod's config settings live in the serverconfig folder inside your world's folder, so each world carries its own copy.[1]

Unverified The exact radius and checkY values this pack ships with could not be confirmed from the available sources. Open the mod's config in your world's serverconfig folder if you want to see or change what the pack uses.

How does Get It Together, Drops! work?

2 parts

Get It Together, Drops! has no machines, no multiblocks and no items of its own. It is a pure server-side tweak that changes one thing: how loose item entities on the ground merge into single stacks. That matters for performance, because places like explosion craters and big farms can otherwise leave hundreds of separate item entities ticking away.[1]

Because the mod only touches server-side behaviour, it can run on a server without players installing it, and it works the same way in singleplayer.[1]

How merging works

In vanilla, a dropped item only looks for neighbours in a very small area around itself. This mod replaces that search with a configurable one, so a drop can reach out further and pull in compatible stacks nearby. The search is a simple distance check in all directions, and it does not take walls into account, so drops on opposite sides of a thin wall can still combine if they are within range.[1]

  • The radius option sets how far a dropped item searches for other drops to combine with. It accepts values from 0.5 to 500, where 0.5 is vanilla behaviour, and a value of 5.0 means it searches 5 blocks in all directions.[1]
  • The checkY option decides whether drops also look above and below themselves. Setting it to false is vanilla behaviour; setting it to true lets stacks merge vertically as well.[1]

On Forge in 1.15 and newer, these settings live in the serverconfig folder inside your world folder, which means each world carries its own values rather than sharing one global file.[1]

Unverified This pack does not ship a config file for the mod, so the exact radius and checkY values in use here could not be confirmed. Check the serverconfig folder of your world if you want to see or change them.

Per-item control with tags

Beyond the two global options, the mod exposes two item tags so specific items can opt out of the wider merging. This is how a pack can keep the performance win for common junk drops while leaving special items alone.[1]

  • getittogetherdrops:do_not_combine: items in this tag do not combine at all.[1]
  • getittogetherdrops:ignored: items in this tag are skipped by the mod entirely and fall back to vanilla merging. This tag takes precedence over do_not_combine, so an item in both is simply treated as vanilla.[1]
Tip: If you build a mob farm or a mining setup and notice drops snapping together from surprisingly far away, that is the radius option doing its job rather than a bug. Raising it further reduces the number of item entities the server has to tick, at the cost of drops being pulled in from a wider area.[1]
Watch out: Because the search ignores walls and can optionally check up and down, sorting setups that rely on drops staying separate in tight spaces can behave differently than in vanilla. If a particular item must never merge, the do_not_combine tag is the tool for it.[1]

Which Get It Together, Drops! config options matter?

2 parts

Get It Together, Drops! only has two config options, and both control how dropped items on the ground combine into stacks. That can help performance in spots with lots of loose items, like explosion craters or farms.[1]

The two options

  • radius: a value from 0.5 to 500 that sets how far a dropped item searches for other dropped items to combine with. Setting it to 5.0 searches 5 blocks in all directions around the item. A value of 0.5 is vanilla behavior, and walls are not taken into account.[1]
  • checkY: set it to true and dropped items also check above and below themselves. Set it to false and they don't. False is vanilla behavior.[1]

Item tags

Two item tags give you per-item control. Items in getittogetherdrops:do_not_combine never combine at all. Items in getittogetherdrops:ignored are skipped by the mod and fall back to vanilla behavior. The ignored tag takes precedence over do_not_combine, so an item in both will behave like vanilla.[1]

Tip: The mod can be installed on a server without players needing it on their side, and it also works in singleplayer.[1]

Unverified No config file for this mod was available for the pack, so I can't confirm what values the pack sets for radius and checkY, or whether it changed them from the mod's defaults. Check the mod's config in your own world or server before relying on any particular value.

What changed in Get It Together, Drops! between versions?

1 part

There isn't much version history to cover for Get It Together, Drops!, and that's a good sign for a small mod. All the Mods 10 0.50 ships version 1.3.2 of it, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier.[2]

Version 1.3.2

  • Fixes an error that happened when stopping a dedicated server. This matters if you run the pack on a server.[3]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so changes to it between individual pack releases are unverified. Changelogs for mod versions before 1.3.2 were not provided either.
