What is Crash Utilities?

Crash Utilities is one of the mods bundled with the pack. This version of the pack ships Crash Utilities 9.0.4, in the file crashutilities-9.0.4.jar.[1]

It's not a new addition either. It was already in the pack as of version 2.25 or earlier, so it has been part of the modpack for a long time.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Crash Utilities actually does, who it is aimed at, or any features, items, recipes or configs. I also couldn't confirm any place for it in the pack's progression, including the ATM Star path, and I found no quests that involve it. Treat all of that as unverified until a source confirms it.

How do you get started with Crash Utilities?

There's no crafting chain to follow with Crash Utilities in this pack, so there's no list of first items to make. The only thing confirmed for this mod is a single text entry that labels a feature "Show Slot Index Tooltips".[2]

From the name, it's a tooltip option that shows slot index information. The text entry doesn't say where you toggle it, what its default is, or exactly what it displays, so I won't guess at those.[2]

Unverified No recipes, quests, config options or guidebook for Crash Utilities could be confirmed for this pack, so there are no recipe steps or quest pointers to give here. Check the in-game settings or the mod's own documentation to see how the slot index tooltips are switched on.

How does Crash Utilities work?

4 parts

Going by the config file this pack ships, Crash Utilities is a housekeeping mod rather than a tech mod. The sources show no machines, multiblocks, or power, fluid, or item pipes for it. What they do show is a set of world checks, all controlled from one server config file. Here is how each system behaves with this pack's settings.[3]

Item Clear

This is the system you are most likely to notice. As the config describes it, the mod checks every set number of minutes how many items are loaded, and if there are more than the maximum it removes all items. In this pack it is switched on through [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.enabled]].[3]

  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.timer]] is the wait between checks in minutes. The pack sets it to 5, and the allowed range is 0 to 1440.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.maximum]] is the item count that triggers a clear. The pack sets it to 1000, so a clear happens when more than 1000 items are loaded.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.warnings]] gives chat warnings in seconds. The pack uses 5 and 20, so you get a warning at 20 seconds and another at 5 seconds.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.warningtext]] is the chat message. The pack's text is ITEMCLEAR IN % SECONDS, and the first % is replaced by the value.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.title]] is on. It runs a title command on the first warning, showing the text from [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.titletext]], which is ITEMCLEAR INCOMING![3]
Watch out: The clear removes all items once the limit is passed, not just the surplus. If you leave a big pile of items on the ground, such as from a mob farm output or a quarry, it can disappear when the count goes over 1000. Keep items in chests or inventories, and watch for the 20-second and 5-second warnings.[3]

The config notes say settings are reloaded when the world reloads, so changes to these values should apply after a world reload.[3]

Memory Checker

The Memory Checker is turned off in this pack, because [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.enabled]] is false. When enabled, it reads the currently used memory. It also adds a command that reads out the last logged memory values, and it writes a warning to the log when a lot of memory is used in a short time.[3]

  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.timer]] is the time between saved memory checks, in seconds. The pack sets it to 30.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.threshold]] is the memory level in MB at which a warning is written to the log. The pack sets it to 1000.[3]
  • As set in this pack, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.heapdump]] is false. If enabled, it runs /spark heapdump the first time memory fills past 95 %, then sets itself back to false.[3]

FTB Chunks cleanup

If FTB Chunks is installed, Crash Utilities can automatically purge the loaded chunks of players who have not been online for a set number of days. This only affects loaded chunks, not claimed ones. In this pack [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Ftb Chunks.enabled]] is false, so it does nothing by default. If a server owner turns it on, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Ftb Chunks.days]] is set to 7.[3]

Tip: The config note says the purge relies on the modify date of the player data file, so that file's timestamp is what it goes by when deciding how long a player has been away.[3]

Slot index tooltips

The mod's language file also lists a Show Slot Index Tooltips option.[2]

Which Crash Utilities config options matter?

3 parts

Crash Utilities keeps its settings in one server config file. As the pack's config file stands, item clearing is switched on, while the memory checker and the FTB Chunks purge are both switched off.[3]

Item Clear (on)

With [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.enabled]] set to true, the config describes a check, run every set number of minutes, of how many items are loaded. If there are more than the maximum, it removes all items. The config notes say settings are reloaded when the world reloads.[3]

  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.timer]] is 5, so the check runs every 5 minutes. The allowed range is 0 to 1440.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.maximum]] is 1000. The config says a clear happens when there are more than that many items.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.warnings]] is "5,20". The config describes these as chat warnings, given in seconds.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.warningtext]] is "ITEMCLEAR IN % SECONDS". The config says the first % is replaced by the value.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.title]] is true, which the config describes as running a title command on the first warning. [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Item Clear.titletext]] is "ITEMCLEAR INCOMING!".[3]
Tip: The config sets chat warnings at "5,20" seconds and a title on the first warning, so keep an eye on chat if you have a lot of items lying around.[3]

Memory Checker (off)

[[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.enabled]] is false in this pack. If you turn it on, it reads the memory currently in use. It adds a command that shows the last logged memory values, and it writes a log warning when a lot of memory is used in a short time.[3]

  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.threshold]] is 1000. The config describes this as the level in MB at which a warning goes to the log.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.timer]] is 30. The config describes this as the time in seconds between the memory checks that are saved for display.[3]
  • In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Memory Checker.heapdump]] is false. The config says that if enabled, it runs /spark heapdump the first time memory fills past 95 %, and the value is then set to false.[3]

FTB Chunks purge (off)

In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Ftb Chunks.enabled]] is false, which the config describes as the automatic purge being off. When enabled with FTB Chunks installed, it is meant for people who have not been online for some amount of days, and it applies to loaded chunks, not claimed ones.[3]

In the pack's config file, [[config:config/crashutilities-server.toml#Ftb Chunks.days]] is 7. The config warns that this relies on the modify date of the player data file.[3]
