What is Chroma Carvings?

This pack ships Chroma Carvings at version 1.21.1-0.2.0, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 4.11 or earlier, so it is a long-standing inclusion rather than a recent addition.[1]

I can't tell you what the mod adds from the pack files I have, so I'm not going to guess at its blocks, items or mechanics here. This guide only covers what the pack data confirms.[1]

How do you get started with Chroma Carvings?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Chroma Carvings is a pumpkin-recoloring mod, so there's no long progression to climb. Everything you make comes from a dye and a pumpkin, and every recipe is a shapeless crafting recipe. Here's the order I'd go in, using orange as the example. Every other color follows the same pattern.[2]

First: dye a plain pumpkin

Start with the colored pumpkin, such as the Orange Pumpkin. It's the base block of the set, and it uses a dye of the matching color together with a normal pumpkin.[2]

Orange PumpkinMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

  • any normal pumpkin
  • any orange dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:orange_pumpkin_from_dye

Next: dye a carved pumpkin

Next comes the carved version, like the Orange Carved Pumpkin. It's the same idea, but with a carved pumpkin as the base instead of a plain one.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any carved pumpkin
  • any orange dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:orange_carved_pumpkin_from_dye

Then: make a colored Jack o'Lantern

This is the step most people are here for. A colored carved pumpkin becomes its matching Jack o'Lantern, for example the Orange Jack o'Lantern, when you craft it with a torch. Make the carved pumpkin first, then light it up.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: chromacarvings:orange_jack_o_lantern

Finally: recolor a Jack o'Lantern you already have

If you already have a Jack o'Lantern, you don't need to start over. The pack has a separate recipe that turns any Jack o'Lantern into a colored one with a matching dye.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any jack o lantern pumpkins
  • any orange dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:orange_jack_o_lantern_from_dye

Tip: The dye recipes accept any item from the matching pumpkin group: normal pumpkins, carved pumpkins or Jack o'Lanterns. That means you can use pumpkins of any color as your starting point, not just uncolored ones.[2]

Unverified No quests, in-game guidebook or tooltip text for this mod were available, so how to obtain the first pumpkins in the pack and any other behavior of the blocks are unconfirmed here.

How does Chroma Carvings work?

3 parts

Good news for your base-building: the sources for Chroma Carvings show no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. What they do show is coloured pumpkin blocks, a set of coloured snow golem entities, and crafting table recipes. That's the whole system, so there is nothing to wire up.[3][4]

The stages of a coloured pumpkin

Each colour comes as a plain pumpkin, a carved pumpkin and a Jack o'Lantern. Using black as the example, those are Black Pumpkin, Black Carved Pumpkin and Black Jack o'Lantern. The same pattern shows up for blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue, light gray and the other colours in the language file.[3]

All of the recipes visible in the pack are shapeless crafting recipes added by the mod. Each stage has a dye recipe, so you can recolour a block at the stage you already have. Here are the black versions:[4]

Black PumpkinMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

  • any normal pumpkin
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_pumpkin_from_dye

Dyeing a plain pumpkin: a black dye and a normal pumpkin from the pumpkin tag give the Black Pumpkin.

Crafting Shapeless

  • any carved pumpkin
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_carved_pumpkin_from_dye

Dyeing a carved pumpkin: it takes a carved pumpkin from the carved pumpkin tag.

Crafting Shapeless

  • any jack o lantern pumpkins
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_jack_o_lantern_from_dye

Dyeing a finished Jack o'Lantern: it takes any Jack o'Lantern from the Jack o'Lantern tag.

You can also make a coloured Jack o'Lantern the classic way, from the coloured carved pumpkin plus a torch:[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_jack_o_lantern

Carved pumpkin plus a torch gives the matching Jack o'Lantern.

Tip: The recipe dump I was given only shows part of the list, from black through light gray. The colours I could see all follow the same naming pattern, so check the recipe viewer in game for the rest.[4]

Breaking and picking them up

The loot tables I could check, such as the black pumpkin, carved pumpkin and Jack o'Lantern, simply drop the block itself. The drop has the standard explosion-survival condition, so a block caught in an explosion may not drop.[5][6][7]

Coloured snow golems

The mod also registers coloured snow golem entities, such as the Black Snow Golem and the Blue Snow Golem, alongside the pumpkin blocks.[3]

Unverified No config files for Chroma Carvings are in the pack, and the sources here do not show any options you could tweak.

How do you progress through Chroma Carvings?

4 parts

Chroma Carvings has no power levels to climb in this pack. What you get is a simple ladder of pumpkin forms: a coloured pumpkin, a coloured carved pumpkin, and a coloured jack o'lantern. Every colour follows the same pattern, so once you know one you know them all. I'll use black as the example.[4]

Coloured pumpkins

The first rung is a plain coloured pumpkin such as Black Pumpkin. It is a shapeless recipe that combines a dye of the matching colour with any pumpkin from the normal pumpkins tag.[4]

Black PumpkinMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

  • any normal pumpkin
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_pumpkin_from_dye

Coloured carved pumpkins

For a carved version such as Black Carved Pumpkin, you combine a matching dye with a pumpkin from the carved pumpkins tag. The recipe accepts any item in that tag, so you don't have to start from the coloured pumpkin from the previous rung.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any carved pumpkin
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_carved_pumpkin_from_dye

Coloured jack o'lanterns

The last rung is the lit version, for example Black Jack o'Lantern. You can light the matching coloured carved pumpkin with a torch, or you can dye an existing jack o'lantern from the jack o'lanterns tag.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_jack_o_lantern

Light a coloured carved pumpkin with a torch.

Crafting Shapeless

  • any jack o lantern pumpkins
  • any black dye

Recipe id: chromacarvings:black_jack_o_lantern_from_dye

Or dye a jack o'lantern you already have.

Tip: The dye recipes accept any item in the relevant tag. That means a jack o'lantern you already have can be recoloured directly, with no need to rebuild it from a pumpkin.[4]

Other colours and drops

The recipe list shows the same pattern for the other colours. That includes items like Light Blue Carved Pumpkin and Light Gray Jack o'Lantern, and every one of these recipes is a shapeless crafting recipe.[4]

In the loot tables for the black, blue and brown blocks (pumpkin, carved pumpkin and jack o'lantern of each), every block simply drops itself, subject to the survives-explosion condition.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

The cyan blocks, the gray carved pumpkin and the gray jack o'lantern follow the same drop-itself pattern in the loot tables I could check.[14][15][16][17][18]

What changed in Chroma Carvings between versions?

Chroma Carvings was added to All the Mods 10 in version 4.11, as Chroma Carvings 1.21.1-0.2.0.[19]

All the Mods 10 8.2 still ships that same build (chromacarvings-1.21.1-0.2.0.jar). The mod list says it was first included in 4.11 or earlier, and the pack changelog gives 4.11 as the release that added it. So the mod's version hasn't changed between 4.11 and 8.2.[1][19]

Unverified The mod's own changelogs for the jar shipped in this pack aren't stored, so what changed inside Chroma Carvings itself in version 0.2.0 is unverified.
