What is Astral Sorcery?

Astral Sorcery is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 2.0.2, using the file AstralSorcery-2.0.2.39.jar, and the mod has been included since version 8.3 of the pack or earlier.[1]

That is all the sources for this guide confirm about the mod, so this overview stays short on purpose. I won't guess at its mechanics or its place in the pack's progression rather than give you something that might not match this version.[1]

How do you get started with Astral Sorcery?

7 parts

Astral Sorcery has a lot of items, but the opening moves in this pack are simple: get Aquamarine, make your Tome, then stock up on Marble. Here is the order I'd go in, with the real in-pack recipes.[2]

Get Aquamarine first

Aquamarine shows up all over the early recipes: the Tome, the Resonating Wand, the Glass Lens and more. In this pack, a Mystical Agriculture recipe makes 16 of it per craft. The pack changed this recipe, so it is not the mod's default.[2]

Changed by the pack: one craft gives you 16 Aquamarine.

There is also a world route: Liquid Starlight meeting lava, 6 of each, makes Aquamarine Shale.[2]

Craft your Tome

Next, make the Tome. The mod's first advancement is about finding an Astral Tome, so this is your entry point.[2][3]

Stock up on Marble

Marble is used by many recipes, including the Resonating Wand and the Illuminated Crafting Table. The pack changed the Mystical Agriculture recipe for it as well, and it gives 16 Marble per craft.[2]

Starmetal

The pack changed how Raw Starmetal is made: a focal combine recipe turns any raw iron material into it. Smelt or blast it to get a Starmetal Ingot. Starmetal Ore smelts into an ingot too.[2]

Bigger crafting altars

The Resonating Crafting Table is made in an altar and costs 1,000 Liquid Starlight. The Luminous Crafting Altar and Iridescent Crafting Altar each cost 3,000.[2]

How does Astral Sorcery work?

7 parts

Astral Sorcery is a starlight-powered crafting mod, and in this pack its machines work through a handful of special recipe types. The sources I have cover those recipe types, the item and block names, the mod's advancements and how its structures and ores generate. They do not explain the power flow of each block in depth, so this page sticks to what is confirmed.[2][3]

Altar crafting and Liquid Starlight

The backbone of the mod is the altar crafting recipe type. The recipe dump counts 41 altar crafting recipes whose ingredients come only from this mod, and another 31 that also mix in common-tag items such as gems, glass panes and gold ingots.[2]

Many of these recipes also use Liquid Starlight as a fluid cost. Three examples from the pack:[2]

The Iridescent Crafting Altar is itself made by altar crafting, including 3,000 Liquid Starlight.

Some altar recipes take a tag rather than one fixed item. The gem tag for aquamarine is accepted by the Glass Lens, the Astrolabe and the Akashic Singularity, so any aquamarine gem works for them.[2]

The mod's language file lists several altar-style blocks: the Illuminated Crafting Table, the Luminous Crafting Altar, the Iridescent Crafting Altar and the Resonating Crafting Table. The sources do not say how they rank against each other.[3]

Starlight item transmutation

The focal combination recipe type shows up in recipe viewers as Starlight Item Transmutation. The pack uses it for two things: turning any small flower into Hyacinth, and making the Illuminated Crafting Table.[2][3]

Focal Combine (astralsorcery)

Recipe id: astralsorcery:focal_combine/altar_illumination

The Illuminated Crafting Table comes from a transmutation recipe, not from a normal crafting grid.

Infusion and ordinary processing

There is a separate infusion recipe type. The pack's example turns Infused Wood into Vibrant Infused Wood.[2]

Infusion (astralsorcery)

Starmetal needs no special machine. Raw Starmetal becomes a Starmetal Ingot in either a furnace or a blast furnace.[2]

Attunement, lumen and focal points

The advancement descriptions are the clearest outline of the attunement side. You can attune a crystal at the Attunement Altar, and you can attune yourself to a constellation there too. Other advancements are about discovering combined lumen types, discovering Prismatic lumen and socketing a Dynamism Gem.[3]

To find a focal point you look at it through an Astrolabe. Focal points are placed by world generation: the focal point structure picks from constellations in the may_be_focal_point tag and registers the result.[3][4]

The Astrolabe has an altar crafting recipe, and a plain crafting recipe with the same ingredients also exists.

Aquamarine supply

Aquamarine feeds the Glass Lens, Astrolabe and Akashic Singularity recipes, so you will want a steady source. Aquamarine Shale generates in the Overworld on riverbeds, in clusters of 4 to 8 placement attempts.[2][5][6]

The pack also changed a Mystical Agriculture recipe: Mystical Agriculture aquamarine essence now crafts into 16 Aquamarine. The dump marks this recipe as changed by the pack.[2]

16× AquamarineChanged by the pack

Crafting Shaped

8 × Aquamarine Essence

Ores and plants in the world

  • Marble generates in Overworld stone in veins of size 26, up to 7 veins per placement, at heights from 0 to 100.[7][8][9]
  • Rock Crystal Ore generates with a 1 in 28 rarity filter, only 4 to 7 blocks above the bottom of the world, where it replaces deepslate ore replaceables.[10][11][12]
  • Glimmer Amaranth flowers generate in snowy biomes with a 1 in 40 rarity filter.[13][14][15]

Structures

  • Columns: the whole Overworld can host them, using random spread placement with spacing 24 and separation 12. Their chest markers become a large shrine chest (weight 1), a small shrine chest (weight 3) or plain marble bricks (weight 12).[16][17][18]
  • Dig sites: found in forest, mountain, savanna and desert biomes. Forest and mountain sites use suspicious gravel, savanna and desert sites use suspicious sand, and the suspicious blocks hold archaeology loot.[19][20]
  • Focal points: Overworld biomes, as described above.[4][21]
  • Moon dials: desert biomes.[22][23]
  • Rotundas: mountain peaks. A chest marker becomes a large shrine chest (weight 1), a small shrine chest (weight 4) or nothing (weight 4).[24][25]
  • Obliteration structures: Overworld and End biomes.[26]

Unverified Spacing and placement rules for the dig site, focal point, moon dial, rotunda and obliteration structures are set in their structure_set data files, which the sources here do not show. Only the column spacing is confirmed above.

How do you progress through Astral Sorcery?

4 parts

Astral Sorcery progression in this pack is driven by recipes, so this page walks you through the chain in the order you will probably need things: raw materials first, then your first tools, then the four altar blocks, then the gear they unlock.[2]

Step 1: Raw materials

Aquamarine is the gem almost everything leans on. Mining Aquamarine Shale gives 1 to 3 Aquamarine, or the shale block itself if you use Silk Touch. You can also make shale by combining Liquid Starlight with lava.[2][27]

Stardust comes from Celestial Crystal clusters. A stage 1 cluster drops 1 Stardust, stages 2 and 3 drop 1 to 2, and a fully grown stage 4 cluster drops 2 Stardust plus the Celestial Crystal itself.[28]

This pack also gives you a farming route through Mystical Agriculture. These essence recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so the amounts are the pack's own.[2]

Starmetal has a few routes. Starmetal Ore and Raw Starmetal both smelt or blast into Starmetal Ingot. The pack changed how Raw Starmetal is made, and it also changed the Mystical Agriculture and Productive Bees routes to Starmetal Ingot.[2]

Step 2: First tools and building blocks

Early crafts are cheap and mostly use Aquamarine. The Tome, Parchment, Glass Lens and Astrolabe all have normal crafting recipes.[2]

    Resonating WandMod recipe

    Focal Combine (astralsorcery)

    Recipe id: astralsorcery:focal_combine/wand

The Resonating Wand is made with a focal combine recipe.

Four flowers, Hyacinth, Iris, Orchid and Protea, are each made by a focal combine from any small flower.[2]

For building, Marble can be stonecut into Marble Bricks, Chiseled Marble, Engraved Marble and a Marble Arch. Sooty Marble comes from Marble and coal, 8 at a time. Logs turn into Infused Wood with Liquid Starlight, and Infused Wood crafts into 4 Infused Wood Planks.[2]

    Resonating GemMod recipe

    Infusion (astralsorcery)

    Recipe id: astralsorcery:infusion/resonating_gem

The Resonating Gem is made from Aquamarine by infusion, and later altars use it.

    Step 3: The four altars

The pack has four altar blocks: Illuminated Crafting Table, Resonating Crafting Table, Luminous Crafting Altar and Iridescent Crafting Altar. Each one drops itself when broken.[29][30][31][32]

    Focal Combine (astralsorcery)

    Recipe id: astralsorcery:focal_combine/altar_illumination

The Illuminated Crafting Table is a focal combine recipe using Marble and a crafting table.

    Altar Crafting (astralsorcery)

    Recipe id: astralsorcery:altar/altar_resonance

The Resonating Crafting Table needs 1,000 Liquid Starlight.

    Altar Crafting (astralsorcery)

    Recipe id: astralsorcery:altar/altar_luminance

The Luminous Crafting Altar needs 3,000 Liquid Starlight and a Resonating Gem.

The Iridescent Crafting Altar also needs 3,000 Liquid Starlight, plus Starmetal and a Glass Lens.

    Step 4: Gear and utility

Once you have altars running, these items are all made with the altar crafting recipe type:[2]

Infused Wood also has upgrade forms, which are all crafted from Infused Wood Planks: Infused Wood Arch, Infused Wood Column, Engraved Infused Wood and Enriched Infused Wood. Vibrant Infused Wood is made by infusing Infused Wood, or crafted from planks and Aquamarine.[2]

How does Astral Sorcery work with other mods?

    2 parts

In this pack, Astral Sorcery connects to other mods through recipes with Mystical Agriculture and Productive Bees. Each of them gives you a way to get Astral Sorcery materials. The pack changed every one of these recipes from the mod default.[2]

Mystical Agriculture: essences into Astral Sorcery materials

Mystical Agriculture has crafting recipes that turn its essences into Astral Sorcery materials. They cover Aquamarine, Marble, Rock Crystal and Starmetal Ingot.[2]
