What is Epitaphs?

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Epitaphs is included in this pack at version 2.2.0. The pack ships it as a NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[1]

The pack's mod list shows it was already present in this pack version or an earlier one. Beyond that, the sources I have don't say anything about its features or how you'd use it.[1]

Unverified What Epitaphs does in gameplay, who it is meant for, and where it fits in the pack's progression (including any ATM Star path) could not be confirmed from the available sources. This page lists no recipes, config options or quests for the mod, because none were provided.

How do you get started with Epitaphs?

3 parts

Epitaphs is a death-recovery mod, and the nice thing is that there is nothing you need to craft to get started. The first thing you will meet is the Grave, which the mod creates for you when you die.[2]

When that happens, the game tells you it created a grave with your items and gives you the location. So after a death, check the chat message first and note the coordinates.[2]

What to do after you die

  1. Read the chat message that says a grave was created with your items. It includes the location.[2]
  2. Follow the highlight hint. The mod shows a message telling you which command to use to find your way back to your grave.[2]
  3. Check the distance. The mod can show how far away your grave is.[2]
  4. Go to the grave yourself. Graves have owners, and if you open someone else's you get a message saying it belongs to them and you cannot access it.[2]
Tip: The chat messages have clickable options labelled Autofill command and Copy to clipboard. They are handy for grabbing the command or the coordinates instead of typing them out.[2]

Commands you will see

The mod has commands for listing your grave locations, highlighting a location, recovering and resetting a player's data, saving players, listing backups and looking up a player's UUID. There is also a message for the case where something goes wrong restoring your items. If you have sufficient permission, you can bypass a grave's access restriction, and the mod tells you when that applies.[2]

The listing command also reports where your latest death was, which is useful if you missed the original message.[2]

What I can't confirm

There is no recipe for any Epitaphs item in the sources I have, so there is no recipe block here. No quests or config files for the mod were found either.[2]

How does Epitaphs work?

4 parts

Epitaphs is a death-recovery mod, so the sources show no machines, multiblocks or power systems to set up. What they do show is a grave that holds your items, plus messages and commands for finding and recovering them.[2]

Graves

The mod creates a Grave holding your items and tells you where it is with a chat message: "Created a grave with your items at" followed by the location.[2]

A grave belongs to one player. If you try to open someone else's, you get a message saying who it belongs to and that you cannot access it. A separate message tells players with sufficient permission that they can bypass the grave's access.[2]

If something goes wrong while your items are being given back, the mod tells you that something went wrong trying to restore them.[2]

Finding your way back

The mod has a message that shows your distance to your grave. Another message tells you to use a command to find your way back to it. The mod's text also includes "Autofill command" and "Copy to clipboard" options, so you don't have to type the command out.[2]

There is also a highlight feature. You can set a new highlight location, or clear the last tracked location. If you give it a death timestamp it can't use, it reports the timestamp as invalid.[2]

Commands for recovery and backups

The mod's command feedback shows a set of recovery and admin tools. Here is what they cover:[2]

  • Listing a player's grave locations, including where your latest death was.[2]
  • Listing the backups available for a player.[2]
  • Recovering to a player, or resetting a player, with separate success and failure messages for each.[2]
  • Saving a single player or all players at a location, with separate messages for full, partial and single failures.[2]
  • Looking up a player's UUID.[2]

Enchantments

Epitaphs also adds the enchantments Soulbound and Experience Soulbound. The sources here only give their names, so check them in game to see what they do.[2]
