What is Chisel?

Chisel is part of the pack at version 1.3.9-1.21.1, shipped as the file chisel_chipped_integration-v1.3.9-1.21.1.jar. It has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist.[1]

I checked the pack's quest book for a Chisel entry. The Forbidden and Arcanus chapter (group "Mod specific Quests", chapter 41 of 54) covers Forbidden & Arcanus topics like Darkstone, the Hephaestus Forge and Edelwood. None of the quests I could see there mention Chisel. Part of that chapter wasn't available to me, so I can't say what the rest of it covers. If you want to know how the quest book handles Chisel, check the quest book in-game.[2]

Unverified What Chisel's blocks and recipes look like in this pack could not be confirmed from the sources I had, so I'm not describing them here.

How do you get started with Chisel?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

This mod adds decorative blocks that you craft straight from the crafting grid. Every recipe for its items in this pack is a shaped crafting recipe, so you can start building with them early. Here is the order I'd go in.[3]

Step 1: Craft the style blocks

Start with the style blocks. Each one is a different look: Factory Block, Laboratory Block, Technical Block, Futura Block and Tyrian. Crafting one of each is the quickest way to see what the mod offers.[3][4]

Step 2: Make the Ender Offset Wand

Next, craft the Ender Offset Wand. Its in-game description says it shifts mural blocks around when you right-click the block face you want to shift.[3][4]

Step 3: Try the Unobtainable Block

Last, there is the Unobtainable Block, which also has a normal crafting recipe in this pack. The mod's names for this family include Repeating Command Block, Chain Command Block and several Structure Block styles.[3][4]

What other looks exist

The mod lists more looks than the blocks above. Factory includes Blue Framed Circuit, Gold Plated Circuit and Yellow-Black Caution Stripes. Technical includes Large Rusty Scaffold, Transparent Still Fan and Massive Hexagonal Plating. Futura includes Rainbowliciously Wavy and Purple ME Controller, and Tyrian includes Black Scaled Plates and Small Uneven Tiles.[4]

How does Chisel work?

4 parts

Good news and honest news, since this is the part where you'd normally expect machines and multiblocks. The sources I have for this part of Chisel (the chisel_chipped_integration namespace) describe decorative blocks, one tool and some crafting recipes. They don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation, so I won't invent any.[4][5]

Block families and variants

The language file groups the blocks into families that share one display name. Factory blocks, for example, all show up as Factory Block, and each variant has a description line with its pattern name, such as Dotted Rusty Plate, Vents, Wireframe or Yellow-Black Caution Stripes. Futura blocks work the same way, with variants like Cyan Screen and Gray Screen.[4]

Every variant description also carries a texture tag. Most are tagged CTM. Old Vents is tagged 3x3 Pattern CTM, and the diamond block variant Cells is tagged 2x2 Pattern CTM. The Futura variants named after ME controllers, plus Fabulously Wavy, are tagged Controller CTM. The sources don't explain what these tags do beyond labelling the variants.[4]

The diamond variants are also listed under the name Block of Diamond, with descriptions like Bismuth, Crushed and Embossed. The language file is cut off, so I can't give you the full list of variants.[4]

Carpets

The mod adds Legacy and Llama carpets in every dye colour. The loot tables I can see, such as Legacy Black and Llama Black, drop the carpet itself when you break it, provided it survives an explosion.[4][6][7]

Crafting the starter blocks

The pack adds shaped crafting recipes for a handful of blocks, shown below. Each one produces a single representative variant of its family: Factory Block, Futura Block, Laboratory Block, Technical Block, Tyrian and Unobtainable Block.[5]

How do you progress through Chisel?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Chisel's content in this pack comes through its Chipped integration, and there is no long tech ladder to climb. Every item here has a plain shaped crafting recipe, so you don't need a machine to get any of it. That makes the set a flat list of options rather than a tiered progression.[3]

Several of the recipes accept any item from a shared material group instead of one fixed item, so you can use whatever you have on hand. Each recipe block below shows exactly what the pack uses.[3]

Decorative blocks

The themed building blocks each have their own recipe. They are the Factory Block, Futura Block, Laboratory Block, Technical Block and Tyrian.[3]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Chisel?

3 parts

Chisel only shows up in one place in the quest book: the "Building Tips" chapter, in the group "The Basics" (chapter 14 of 54, with 66 quests). There is a single quest for it, "Chisel Reborn" quest, and its task is to get the Chisel.[8]

How you reach it

  1. "Building Tips!" quest opens the chapter with general building tips.[8]
  2. "Tools!" quest comes after it. It starts you off with a Stick and talks about tools for getting and placing blocks.[8]
  3. "Changing Blocks" quest comes after Tools!. It is about mods that turn blocks you already have into different shapes, designs or entirely new blocks.[8]
  4. "Chisel Reborn" quest comes after Changing Blocks. This is the Chisel quest.[8]

What the Chisel quest tells you

The quest describes the mod as using the Chisel tool to change the designs of some blocks. Right click with the chisel to open its GUI, put up to a stack of blocks in, pick a design and take the blocks out. You can also leave them in the chisel.[8]

You can also left click a block with the chisel to change its design without opening the GUI. The quest says this chisel has no durability, so you don't need to worry about it wearing out.[8]

Other quests next to it

Four more quests also unlock after Changing Blocks, so they sit right beside the Chisel quest. They cover other block-changing and building mods.[8]
