What is TorchMaster?

1 part

TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning with simple blocks. Its headline items are the Mega Torch and the Dread Lamp. The mod adds a special torch that stops mobs spawning within a configurable radius. The original idea came from RWTema's Extra Utilities 1.[1]

The torch is meant to block only "natural" spawning caused by low light levels. Mob spawners should still work, because the author added special handling for vanilla spawners, and spawners from other mods are expected to work as well.[1]

This pack includes TorchMaster 20.1.9.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

In the pack's quest book, TorchMaster appears through the quest "Torchmaster" quest, in the chapter "Useful mods and Items". That is chapter 3 of 44 in the book and holds 37 quests.[3]

The quest asks you to obtain the Mega Torch and the Dread Lamp, which the mod's own page names as its headline blocks. It also asks for two more TorchMaster items, the Feral Flare Lantern and the Frozen Pearl. The quest source doesn't give the quest's group or what it depends on, so the sources here don't show which quests lead into it or follow it.[1][3]

The same chapter also has the quest "Void Dimension" quest, whose description calls it a void dimension without mob spawn. That is what the quest book says about it, not something the TorchMaster page states.[3]

How do you get started with TorchMaster?

4 parts

TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning with a few special blocks. There are four items to make, and the order below is the one I'd follow. The pack's quest book has a "Torchmaster" quest quest in the "Useful mods and Items" chapter (chapter 3 of 44) that asks for all four, so you can use it as a checklist.[1][3]

Mega Torch: stop hostile spawns

Start with the Mega Torch. It prevents natural spawning of hostile monsters in a big radius around it, which makes it a great first base protector. In this pack the radius is 64 in each direction, measured as a cube with the torch at the centre. You can change it with General.megaTorchRadius.[4][5]

The pack changes this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from other packs. Check the one below.[6]

It only blocks natural spawns, meaning the ones from low light levels. Mob spawners still work, because General.blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is true in this pack. The torch also blocks village sieges from zombies, thanks to General.blockVillageSieges.[1][5]

Dread Lamp: stop passive spawns

Next, make the Dread Lamp. It does a similar job for passive animals such as squids, bats or ocelots. Its radius is also 64 here, set by General.dreadLampRadius.[4][5]

Feral Flare Lantern: light without torches

The Feral Flare Lantern places invisible lights. In this pack it tries to light an area with a radius of 16 up to a light level of 10, and it tries every 5 ticks. It can place at most 255 lights.[4][5]

Watch out: If you edit the lantern's settings, be careful. The config warns that setting the light cap too high together with the minimum light level and radius can lead to world corruption (a "Badly compressed packet" error).[5]

Frozen Pearl: clean up leftover lights

Finish with the Frozen Pearl. It clears residual lights from a Feral Flare Lantern. It has 1,024 charges in this pack, and each light it removes uses one charge. Make it once you've used the lantern and have lights you want gone.[4][5]

How does TorchMaster work?

5 parts

TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning with a few simple blocks. The sources only describe spawn blocking and light placing, so this section covers those systems and nothing else. They say nothing about power, fluids, item handling or multiblocks.[1][4]

Mega Torch: stopping hostile spawns

The Mega Torch prevents natural spawning of hostile monsters in a big radius around it. In this pack that radius is 64 in each direction, a cube with the torch at its center. You can change it with General.megaTorchRadius.[4][5]

The torch is meant to block only natural spawning from low light levels, so mob spawners should still work. The mod has special handling for vanilla spawners and is meant to work with spawners from other mods too. If you want spawners blocked as well, set General.blockOnlyNaturalSpawns to false. The pack ships it as true.[1][5]

The pack also enables General.blockVillageSieges, so the Mega Torch blocks village sieges from zombies. General.lycanitesMobsBlockAll is on too, so the torch blocks all natural spawn attempts from Lycanites Mobs in its radius.[5]

The pack changes the Mega Torch recipe from the mod's own, so check this one rather than relying on memory from other packs.[6]

Dread Lamp: stopping passive spawns

The Dread Lamp does the same job for passive animals. It prevents natural spawning of things like squids, bats or ocelots in a big radius around the lamp. Its radius is also 64 in this pack, as a cube centered on the lamp, and you set it with General.dreadLampRadius.[4][5]

Changing what gets blocked

Both blocks use an entity list that you can adjust. General.megaTorchEntityBlockListOverrides and General.dreadLampEntityBlockListOverrides are both empty in this pack, so the built-in lists apply. A + prefix adds an entity to the list, which denies its spawns. A - prefix removes it, which allows its spawns. The Mega Torch examples are "+minecraft:zombie" to block zombies and "-minecraft:creeper" to allow creepers. Each entry needs quotes, and multiple entries are separated by commas.[5]

  • General.aggressiveSpawnChecks is false in this pack. Turning it on makes the spawn check more aggressive, effectively overriding the results of other mods' spawn checks.[5]
  • General.logSpawnChecks is false. Turn it on to print entity spawn checks to the debug log.[5]
  • The mod can also dump entities and torches to the log file through its commands.[4]

Feral Flare Lantern: invisible lights

The Feral Flare Lantern places invisible lights. In this pack it tries to place them within a radius of 16 (General.feralFlareRadius), aiming for a minimum light level of 10 (General.feralFlareMinLightLevel). It tries every 5 ticks (General.feralFlareTickRate), where 1 would mean every tick.[4][5]

A single lantern can place at most 255 lights, set by General.feralFlareLanternLightCountHardcap. Setting it to 0 disables light placement.[5]

Watch out: If you raise the light cap too high together with the minimum light level and the radius, it can lead to world corruption (a "Badly compressed packet" error). Be careful when editing these values.[5]

Frozen Pearl: cleaning up leftover lights

The Frozen Pearl clears residual lights from a Feral Flare Lantern. In this pack it has a durability of 1024 (General.frozenPearlDurability), and each light it removes costs one charge. Setting the durability to 0 disables it.[4][5]

General.beginnerTooltips is on in this pack, so certain items and blocks show extra information in their tooltips.[5]

How do you progress through TorchMaster?

1 part

The pack's quest book gives TorchMaster no tier ladder. It asks for the mod's items in a single quest, "Torchmaster" quest, in the chapter "Useful mods and Items" (chapter 3 of 44 in the book, 37 quests in total).[3]

That quest has four item tasks: the Mega Torch, the Dread Lamp, the Feral Flare Lantern and the Frozen Pearl. They all sit in one quest, so the book doesn't rank them or set an order for them.[3][6]

Recipes for each item

The Mega Torch is the one the pack changed. Its recipe is marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's default.[6]

The Dread Lamp, Feral Flare Lantern and Frozen Pearl use the mod's own recipes, and the pack doesn't mark any change on them.[6]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use TorchMaster?

1 part

The pack's quest book has one TorchMaster quest, "Torchmaster" quest, in the chapter "Useful mods and Items". That is chapter 3 of 44 in the book, and the chapter holds 37 quests.[3]

The Torchmaster quest

This quest asks you to hand in four items, listed in this order:[3]

That is the whole quest line for the mod. There are no other TorchMaster quests in this chapter, so once you have those four items you have covered everything the quest book asks for.[3]

The sources give no ordering between this quest and the other quests in the chapter, so I can't say which ones come right before or after it.[3]

Which TorchMaster config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.51 guide

Everything TorchMaster-related lives in one file, config/torchmaster.toml, and every option sits under the General section. Here are the ones you're most likely to touch, with the exact values this pack ships.[7]

Mega torch and dread lamp

Feral flare and frozen pearl

Watch out: Be careful raising the lantern light cap. Setting it too high together with the minimum light level and radius can lead to world corruption (a "Badly compressed packet" error).[7]

Debug and quality-of-life

Unverified The sources only show the values this pack uses, not the mod's defaults, so I can't confirm which of these options the pack actually changed.

What changed in TorchMaster between versions?

1 part

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships TorchMaster 20.1.9, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[2]

Changes from 20.1.0 to 20.1.9

  • 20.1.0: the initial port to Minecraft 1.20.1.[8]
  • 20.1.1: better compatibility with modded spawners (EnderIO spawners should no longer be blocked) and improved village siege blocking.[8]
  • 20.1.2: improved blocking for the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp. Intentional spawns like spawn eggs, bucket placements and breeding should no longer be blocked.[8]
  • 20.1.3: fixed the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp not working since 20.1.2.[8]
  • 20.1.4: added a missing creative tab title.[8]
  • 20.1.5: improved compatibility with other mods that spawn additional entities in a group.[8]
  • 20.1.6: improved compatibility with CarryOn, so mobs should no longer despawn when dropped inside the working volume of a torch or lamp.[8]
  • 20.1.7: added an experimental volume renderer.[8]
  • 20.1.8: you now get a message when you enable a volume renderer.[8]
  • 20.1.9: added explicit compatibility with MCA Reborn, so the MCA Zombie Villager should no longer spawn in Mega Torch volumes.[8]
Tip: The volume renderer lets you see a torch's range. Right click the torch with an empty hand or a dye to show it, and use shift with an empty hand to hide it again.[8]
Watch out: Known issue from 20.1.9: MCA Zombie Villagers are always blocked inside torch volumes, even when they come from spawners, villager eggs or admin commands.[8]
