What is Runelic?

3 parts

Runelic is a font mod. It adds the Runelic font to Minecraft, which swaps commonly used characters for runic symbols and designs. It works with any text that allows custom styles, including signs, books, name tags and item tooltips.[1]

The font covers the standard 26 Latin letters (upper and lower case share the same designs), the digits and a set of punctuation characters. Because each character is substituted consistently, runic text can be translated back to normal text if you know the substitutions.[1]

Banner patterns

The mod also adds banner patterns for all of the 50+ characters in the font. You apply them to banners with a Runelic banner stencil item, which you get from wandering traders.[1]

Using the font

Vanilla commands that accept raw text components, such as give and title, can use the font by setting the font ID to runelic:runelic in the text's properties. The mod depends on Bookshelf, which provides font commands that work with Runelic. For example, the bookshelf font item command applies the font to the name of the item you are holding, and the bookshelf font block command applies it to a block entity such as a sign or chest.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Runelic 18.0.4 for Forge 1.20.1. It was already in the pack by version 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]

How do you get started with Runelic?

3 parts

Good news: Runelic is a simple one, and there is nothing you need to craft first. It is a runic font for Minecraft, so there is no machine to build and no progression to climb. You just apply the font to text.[1]

The font swaps the standard 26 Latin letters (upper and lower case share the same designs), the digits 1234567890 and a set of punctuation characters for runic symbols. It works with any text that allows custom styles, including signs, books, name tags and item tooltips.[1]

Step 1: Try the font on something you own

The mod depends on Bookshelf, which adds font commands that work with Runelic. These are the quickest way to see the font in action, though they are mainly meant for servers, so you may need command permissions.[1]

  • /bookshelf font say runelic:runelic posts a chat message in the font.[1]
  • /bookshelf font item runelic:runelic applies the font to the name of the item you are holding.[1]
  • /bookshelf font book runelic:runelic applies it to the name of a held book and all of its pages.[1]
  • /bookshelf font block runelic:runelic x y z applies it to a block entity, such as a sign or a nameable block like a chest.[1]

Step 2: Use it in vanilla commands

Vanilla commands that accept raw text components can use the font if you set the font ID to runelic:runelic in the text properties. The mod page gives the give command and the title command as examples.[1]

Step 3: Get banner patterns

The mod also adds banner patterns for all 50+ of its characters. According to the mod page, you apply them to banners with a Runelic banner stencil item, which you get from wandering traders. Once applied, the patterns show up with names like Black Rune 0 or Blue Rune 1 in the banner's pattern list.[1][3]

Unverified No in-pack recipes, quests or config options for Runelic were found, so there is no confirmed crafting order for this mod. The trader stencil is described only on the mod's own page, and its item id and trade details have not been checked in this pack.

How does Runelic work?

3 parts

Here's the thing about Runelic: it isn't a tech or machine mod. The project page describes it as a runic font for Minecraft with banner patterns, and it doesn't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. A font and a set of banner patterns is what this section covers.[1]

How the font works

Runelic swaps commonly used characters for runic symbols. Upper and lower case letters share the same design, so you can translate Runelic text back to normal text once you know the substitutions. It works with any text that accepts custom styles, including signs, books, name tags and item tooltips.[1]

The character set currently covers the 26 Latin letters (upper and lower case), the digits 1234567890, and a range of common punctuation symbols.[1]

Banner patterns

The project page says the mod includes banner patterns for all 50+ characters the font currently supports. To apply them, you use a Runelic banner stencil item, which the project page says you get from wandering traders. The language file lists the patterns as numbered runes, such as Rune 0 through Rune 9, each in every dye color.[1][3]

Using the font with commands

The font ID is runelic:runelic. Any vanilla command that accepts raw text components can use it if you set that ID as the font in the text's properties. The give and title commands are examples.[1]

Runelic depends on Bookshelf, which gives servers some font commands that work with Runelic and any other installed font. These are the ones listed on the project page:[1]

  • /bookshelf font say runelic:runelic posts a chat message in the font.[1]
  • /bookshelf font item runelic:runelic applies the font to the name of the item you're holding.[1]
  • /bookshelf font book runelic:runelic applies the font to the name of a held book and all of its pages.[1]
  • /bookshelf font block runelic:runelic x y z applies the font to a block entity. It works with signs and nameable blocks like chests.[1]
Tip: If you're making a mod or using scripting tools, you can apply the font to any mutable text component by setting the font on that component's style.[1]

What changed in Runelic between versions?

There isn't much to report here. Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Runelic 18.0.4 (the Forge 1.20.1 build), and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]

The mod's own changelogs for 18.0.4 and 18.0.2 don't say what changed, because no changelog was specified for either release. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod either, so I can't point to any notable change in Runelic across the pack's releases.[4][5]
