How does FTB Quests work?

5 parts

Same as in the Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 guide

FTB Quests is mostly a questing mod, but it also adds blocks that let you hand in items, read quest progress and react to quests with automation. Here is what the sources tell us about how they work.[1]

Task Screens

Task Screens come in several sizes: Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7).[1]

Item tasks have a setting called Task Screen Only. When it is on, items can only be submitted by piping them into a Task Screen. It only applies when Consume Items is enabled for that task. So if a quest is set up this way, handing in items from your inventory will not work, and you need a screen to pipe into.[1]

Each screen has its own settings: Size, Skin, Task Index, Fullscreen, Hide Icons, Input Mode Icon, Input Only, Indestructible and Draw Text Shadows. If you lack permission, you get a message saying you can't configure the screen.[1]

If a screen shows "Broken Block / Missing Data!", the block is reporting a problem with its data.[1]

Quest Chest

The Quest Chest has an Input Slot and an Output Slot. You place items in the input slot to complete quests, and rewards appear in the output slot. There is also an Auto-Transfer All Items option for the chest.[1]

Detectors and barriers

The mod adds several blocks that react to quest state or to the world:[1]

  • Quest Detector: has Task and Notifications settings.[1]
  • Player Detector: has Radius, Height and Offset Y settings.[1]
  • Redstone Detector: has a Required Redstone Level setting.[1]
  • Quest Progress Detector: has an Object ID and an Output Level setting.[1]
  • Quest Barrier: has an Object ID setting. A Stage Barrier also exists.[1]

Beyond the setting names, the sources here do not explain exactly how each detector or barrier behaves, so test them in a creative world before building a contraption around them.[1]

Loot crates

The Loot Crate Opener shows a count of its stored items when you right click it. A Loot Crate Storage block also exists.[1]

Quest progression settings

The quest book file has a Detection Delay setting: the minimum interval, in ticks, between checks of a player's inventory when it changes. Higher values are kinder to server TPS, especially when inventories change often, but quest auto-completion messages take longer to appear.[1]

Progression mode can be Linear or Flexible. In Linear, a quest must be complete before the quests that depend on it are started. In Flexible, tasks in dependent quests can be progressed at any time, but those quests can't be completed until their dependency is.[1]

Quests can also require tasks to be done in strict order when Require Sequential Tasks is on. Setting Min Required Dependencies above 0 turns a quest into an OR quest, where only that many dependencies are needed to unlock it.[1]

Tip: Your Quest Book can be dropped on death if the Drop FTB Quests Book on Death option is enabled in the quest book settings. This pack's value for that option is not shown in the sources.[1]
