What is FTB Backups 2?
This pack includes FTB Backups 2 at version 1.0.23, shipped as the file ftbbackups2-forge-1.20-1.0.23.jar. It was first included in pack version 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[1]
How do you get started with FTB Backups 2?
3 parts
This one is a bit different from most mods in the pack: the sources I have for it are its config file, so your first steps are about checking settings rather than crafting. Everything below comes from the config as this pack sets it, in config/ftbbackups2.json.[2]
What to check first
- Make sure backups are switched on. enabled is set to true in this pack, so automatic backups are allowed.[2]
- Look at the schedule. backup_cron is set to "0 */30 * * * ?", and that cron expression is what decides when automatic backups run.[2]
- Know when a backup is skipped. only_if_players_been_online is true, so a backup only runs if a player has been online since the last one.[2]
- Check how many backups are kept. retention_mode is MAX_BACKUPS, and max_backups is 5.[2]
- Decide where backups go and what format they use. backup_location is "." and backup_format is ZIP (the other valid option is DIRECTORY).[2]
Using the command and notifications
The /backup command needs permission level 3, set by command_permission_level. The delay between manual backups made with the command is manual_backups_time, which is 0 in this pack.[2]
Backup status messages are only sent to server ops, because notify_op_only is true. do_not_notify is false, so the messages are not turned off completely. File sizes are not shown in the backup message, since display_file_size is false.[2]
Disk space
minimum_free_space is 0 here, so backups are not aborted for low disk space unless you raise it. The value is in MB: if a backup would leave less free space than that, it is aborted. free_space_if_needed is false, so the oldest backup is not deleted automatically to make room after a failure caused by lack of space.[2]
The backup preview image uses the dimension set in preview_dimension, which is minecraft:overworld in this pack. The config notes that setting it to "all" enables automatic detection of the primary dimension and can be very slow.[2]
additional_directories, additional_files and excluded are all empty by default in this pack, so nothing extra is added to or left out of backups.[2]
Unverified Whether this mod adds any craftable items or quests in this pack is not confirmed by the available sources, so there are no recipe steps here.
How does FTB Backups 2 work?
6 parts
FTB Backups 2 has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. It is a world backup tool, and everything it does is controlled by enabled and the other options in its config file. Here is how those options work in this pack.[2]
When backups run
Automatic backups are switched on in this pack (enabled is true). The schedule is a cron expression in backup_cron, and the pack sets it to "0 */30 * * * ?".[2]
only_if_players_been_online is also true here, so a backup only runs if a player has been online since the last backup.[2]
Where backups go and what format they use
The pack sets backup_format to "ZIP". The valid options are ZIP and DIRECTORY. backup_location is set to ".".[2]
You can add extra content with additional_directories and additional_files, and leave things out with excluded. All of these are empty in this pack. The file's comments say file entries match on the end of the path, or on part of the path if you use the wildcard form.[2]
How many backups are kept
retention_mode is "MAX_BACKUPS" in this pack. In that mode, max_backups sets the maximum number of backups to keep, and the pack sets it to 5.[2]
The other mode is TIERED, and the pack does not use it. Its options only apply if you switch to that mode, and the pack's values are listed below.[2]
- keep_latest: the latest x backups are retained, set to 5.[2]
- keep_hourly: hourly backups to keep, set to 1.[2]
- keep_daily: daily backups to keep, set to 1.[2]
- keep_weekly: weekly backups to keep, set to 1.[2]
- keep_monthly: monthly backups to keep, set to 1.[2]
Disk space
minimum_free_space is a limit in MB. If making a backup would leave less free disk space than that, the backup is aborted. The pack sets it to 0.[2]
free_space_if_needed is false here. If it were on, a backup that failed because of lack of space would lead to the oldest backup being deleted to free space.[2]
Commands and notifications
The /backup command needs permission level 3 in this pack, set by command_permission_level.[2]
manual_backups_time is the time between manual backups using the command, and it is 0 here.[2]
Backup status messages are on (do_not_notify is false), but notify_op_only is true, so only server ops see them. display_file_size is false, so the file size is not shown in the message.[2]
Backup preview image
Backups get a preview image, and preview_dimension chooses the dimension it is made from. The pack sets it to "minecraft:overworld". You can set it to "all" to detect the primary dimension automatically, but the config comment warns this can be very slow.[2]
Which FTB Backups 2 config options matter?
5 parts
Here are the options you are most likely to touch, exactly as the pack sets them in the mod's config file. Automatic backups are switched on, since enabled is true.[2]
When backups run
- backup_cron is "0 */30 * * * ?", a cron expression.[2]
- only_if_players_been_online is true, so a backup only runs if a player has been online since the last backup.[2]
- manual_backups_time is 0. This is the time between manual backups made with the command.[2]
How many backups are kept
retention_mode is "MAX_BACKUPS", and max_backups is 5, so the pack keeps a maximum of 5 backups.[2]
The tiered options only apply when the retention mode is TIERED, so they have no effect in this pack as it stands. Their values are 5 for keep_latest, and 1 each for keep_hourly, keep_daily, keep_weekly and keep_monthly.[2]
Where and how backups are stored
- backup_format is "ZIP". The other valid option is DIRECTORY.[2]
- backup_location is ".".[2]
- excluded, additional_directories and additional_files are all empty lists in this pack.[2]
- preview_dimension is "minecraft:overworld". The config notes that setting it to "all" enables automatic detection of the primary dimension, which can be very slow.[2]
Disk space
minimum_free_space is 0 (in MB). If a backup would leave less free disk space than this value, it is aborted.[2]
free_space_if_needed is false. When it is true, the oldest backup is deleted to free space after a previous backup failed for lack of space, so in this pack that does not happen.[2]
Messages and commands
- notify_op_only is true, so backup status messages only go to server ops.[2]
- do_not_notify is false, so backup status is still sent.[2]
- display_file_size is false, so file size is not shown in the backup message.[2]
- command_permission_level is 3. This is the permission level needed to use the /backup command.[2]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as ftbbackups2, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
