What is Dark Utilities?
2 parts
Dark Utilities is an expansive content mod that adds a little bit of everything. It expands on the vanilla game with new items and blocks, and every one of them has a tooltip with a short summary of what it does. This pack ships version 17.0.6 for 1.20.1.[1][2]
What it adds
- Vector Plates: flat, rotatable blocks that push mobs and other entities around. Mobs can spawn on top of them, which makes them a popular choice for moving mobs in mob farms.[1]
- Mob Filters: blocks that only let certain types of mobs through. The hostile mob filter, for example, only lets hostile mobs pass.[1]
- Sleep Charm: while it is in your inventory it wards off insomnia, so phantoms won't spawn, and you fall asleep instantly when you enter a bed.[1]
- Redstone Randomizer: a redstone component that toggles on and off randomly, and emits a redstone signal while it is on.[1]
- Player Damage Plate: a flat block that deals player damage to any mob that steps on it.[1]
That is only a small sample of what the mod adds.[1]
Where the quest book puts it
Dark Utilities has no chapter of its own in the pack's quest book. Its vector plates, which push mobs and other entities around, sit in the Mob Grinding Utilities chapter. That fits, since they are a popular choice for moving mobs in mob farms. The chapter is in the Resource Generation group and is chapter 10 of 44 in the book. It has 75 quests.[1][3]
The vector plates form a short three-step chain of quests that ask you to obtain each plate. It starts with a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", which asks for Vector Plate, and the listing shows no quest before it. Next comes a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" for Fast Vector Plate, and then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" for Extreme Vector Plate. In the chapter listing, no quest comes after the Extreme Vector Plate.[3]
Dark Utilities is not on the ATM Star quest path.[3]
How do you get started with Dark Utilities?
4 parts
Dark Utilities is mostly about flat plates, mob filters and a few handy charms. In this pack the first thing the quest book asks of you from this mod is the Vector Plate, so that is where we start.[1][3]
The Vector Plate quest a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" sits in the Mob Grinding Utilities chapter, in the Resource Generation group (chapter 10 of 44 in the book). It has no earlier quest listed in that chapter. Fast Vector Plate a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" comes after it, and Extreme Vector Plate a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" comes after that.[3]
Step 1: Vector Plate
Vector plates are flat, rotatable blocks that push mobs and other entities around. Mobs can spawn on top of them, which is why they are popular for moving mobs in mob farms. One craft gives you 6 plates.[1][4]

Step 2: Fast and Extreme Vector Plates
Once the basic plate works, upgrade it. The recipe for the Fast Vector Plate is changed by the pack, so follow the recipe below rather than what you remember from the mod. It makes 6 plates per craft.[4]

The Extreme Vector Plate is crafted from the Fast plate and also makes 6 per craft. The recipe is the mod's own.[4]

Step 3: A Mob Filter
Mob filters are blocks that only let certain mobs through. The Mob Filter (Hostile) only lets hostile mobs pass, so it is a good first filter to pair with your plates. Each craft makes 4.[1][4][5]

Step 4: Sleep Charm
The Sleep Charm wards off insomnia while it is in your inventory, which stops phantoms from spawning. You also fall asleep instantly when you get into a bed. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so check the recipe below.[1][4][5]

How does Dark Utilities work?
6 parts
Dark Utilities works differently from a tech mod. The sources for this pack describe no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling for it. What they do describe is placed blocks that react to whatever walks over or through them, some redstone components, and a few carried items. Among the plate tooltips, only the Slow Fall plate describes its effect as temporary. Here is how each group behaves.[1][5]
Vector plates: moving mobs around
Vector plates are flat, rotatable blocks that push mobs and other entities around. Mobs can spawn on top of them, which is why they are a popular way to move mobs in mob farms.[1]
They come in several speeds, according to their tooltips. The Vector Plate lightly pushes mobs, the Fast Vector Plate pushes them quickly, the Extreme Vector Plate pushes them rapidly, and the Ultra Vector Plate pushes them at lightning speeds. The mod has an advancement for obtaining the Ultra one, and it calls it mysterious. The sources give no recipe for the Extreme or Ultra plates.[5]

Mob filters: letting only some mobs through
Mob filters are blocks that only let certain types of mob pass through. The hostile filter, for example, only lets hostile mobs walk through it.[1]
The mod's language file lists these filter groups: animal, arthropod, child, equipment, fire immune, freeze immune, golem, hostile, illager, named, passenger, pet, player, raid, slime, undead, villager and water. The passenger filter lets mounts, vehicles and their passengers through, and the equipment filter lets through mobs that have equipment.[5]
These filters have a crafting recipe in the pack: Mob Filter (Animal), Mob Filter (Arthropod), Mob Filter (Child), Mob Filter (Equipment) and Mob Filter (Villager). The villager one is changed by the pack.[4]

Effect plates
Other plates apply an effect to entities that step on them, according to their tooltips. Only the Slow Fall plate's tooltip says its effect is temporary, and the others give no duration. The tooltips describe them like this:[5]
- Alert Plate: the tooltip says entities that step on it will glow.[5]
- Damage Plate: the tooltip says it hurts anything that walks on it.[5]
- Maim Plate: the tooltip says it causes non-lethal damage to anything that walks on it.[5]
- Player Damage Plate: the tooltip says it causes player damage to anything that walks on it.[5]
- Darkness Plate: the tooltip says it darkens the vision of entities that step on it.[5]
- Misfortune Plate: the tooltip says entities that step on it will have bad luck.[5]
- Slow Fall plate: the tooltip says entities that step on it will temporarily fall slowly.[5]
- Fatigue, Flame, Frost, Hunger, Levitation, Ominous, Poison, Slowness, Weakness and Wither plates also exist. Their tooltips say they fatigue, burn, start to freeze, hunger, levitate, bring a bad omen to, poison, slow, weaken or wither entities that step on them. The sources give no recipes for these or for the Slow Fall plate.[5]
The Player Damage Plate causes player damage to any mob that steps on it.[1]

Redstone components
The Redstone Randomizer toggles on and off at random and emits a redstone signal while it is on. Shielded Redstone emits a signal in only one direction.[1][5]
Charms
The Sleep Charm works passively while it is in your inventory. It wards off insomnia, which stops phantoms from spawning, and you fall asleep instantly when you enter a bed. The pack changed its recipe.[1][4]

Tomes
Several tomes turn your text into another script: Pig Pen Tome into the Pig Pen Cipher, Runelic Tome into Runelic, Galactic Tome into the Standard Galactic Alphabet, and Illager Tome into the Illager language. The Tome of Enchanting refreshes enchanting options by using some EXP, and the Tome of Shadows lets entities and certain blocks be hidden from view. The sources give no recipes for those last ones.[5]
The Illager Tome recipe is changed by the pack.[4]

How do you progress through Dark Utilities?
5 parts
Dark Utilities has a small footprint in the pack's quest book. The only quests for it that the sources show are the vector plate line, and the book places them inside the Mob Grinding Utilities chapter (group Resource Generation, chapter 10 of 44 in the book). The rest of the mod has in-pack recipes but no quests in that chapter.[3][4]
The vector plate line
The vector plates are the one part of the mod the quest book walks you through. There are three tiers, and each one is crafted from the previous tier:[3][4]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" asks you to obtain a Vector Plate. It has no prerequisite listed in the chapter.[3][4]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" comes after the Vector Plate quest and asks you to obtain a Fast Vector Plate.[3][4]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" comes after the Fast Vector Plate quest and asks you to obtain an Extreme Vector Plate.[3][4]

Beyond the quests
Everything else in the mod has a recipe but no quest in this chapter. That includes effect plates such as the Damage Plate, Flame Plate and Wither Plate, and the mob filters. Here is the Damage Plate as an example:[3][4]

The Blank Plate is made by stonecutting rather than crafting:[4]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Dark Utilities?
2 parts
In the pack's quest book, Dark Utilities items are requested in one chapter, "Mob Grinding Utilities" quest, which sits in the "Resource Generation" group as chapter 10 of 44. The chapter has 75 quests in total, and only a short chain of them asks for Dark Utilities items.[3]
The vector plate chain
Three quests in that chapter ask you to hand in a vector plate. Each one is a plain item submission, and each comes after the one before it in the quest book.[3]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" asks you to hand in a Vector Plate. The chapter lists no earlier quest for it.[3]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" asks you to hand in a Fast Vector Plate. It comes after the Vector Plate quest.[3]
- a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" asks you to hand in an Extreme Vector Plate. It comes after the Fast Vector Plate quest.[3]
What sits around them
In the quest book, the vector plate chain is not linked to the other quests in the chapter. Those other quests ask for items from other mods.[3]
What changed in Dark Utilities between versions?
2 parts
Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Dark Utilities 17.0.6, the Forge 1.20.1 build. The mod was already in the pack by 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it has been there for a good while.[2]
17.0.6
- Fixed issues when encoding non-ascii characters in language files.[6]
- Optimized several item and block textures.[6]
- Updated build dependencies, which is behind-the-scenes work you won't notice in game.[6]
17.0.5
Both of these are small fix-and-cleanup releases. The mod's own changelogs list no new features or balance changes for them.[6][7]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for Dark Utilities were available, so any change the pack itself made to this mod is unverified.
