What is WITS (What Is This Structure?)?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

WITS (What Is This Structure?) is a tiny command mod with one job. It adds a /wits command, and when you run it, it prints the registry names of all structures at the exact spot you are standing. That's it.[1]

It works in single player worlds and on servers. If the mod is on a server, every client can use the base /wits command, including vanilla clients.[1]

Operator command

Operators and server owners can add a dimension and coordinate parameter to the /witsop command. That lets them get structure names at any location in any dimension. Non-operators can't use the command with those extra parameters, which keeps the mod fairly balanced for players.[1]

What it can't see

Watch out: Not every build you see is a structure. Vanilla dungeons and desert wells are features, so the command can't detect them. Features save no info about themselves to the chunk. Basically, every structure you see with the /locate command is what this mod can detect, and nothing more.[1]

In this pack

This pack ships WITS version 1.4.3+26.1-neoforge. It has been in the pack since 0.0.16 or earlier.[2]

How do you get started with WITS (What Is This Structure?)?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft here. WITS is a small command mod, and all it adds is a new command called /wits. No items, no machines, no setup. Nothing in the sources I have shows any in-pack recipes or quests for it, so there are no recipe blocks in this section.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Walk to a spot where you think there's a structure, such as a village, a fortress or a modded build.[1]
  2. Run /wits in chat. It prints the registry names of every structure at the exact spot you're standing on.[1]
  3. Move to a different spot and run it again to compare. The result only covers the position you're standing at.[1]

The registry names it prints are handy for working out which mod a structure comes from. They're also the names you'd use with /locate.[1]

Singleplayer and servers

The base /wits command works in singleplayer worlds and on servers. If the mod is installed on a server, every client gets the command, vanilla clients included.[1]

Operators and server owners also get /witsop. It accepts a dimension and coordinates, so they can check structure names at any location in any dimension. Non-operators can't use those extra parameters, which keeps the mod fairly balanced for players.[1]

What it can't see

Watch out: Not every build you see is a structure. Vanilla dungeons and desert wells are features, and WITS can't detect them, because features don't save any info about themselves to the chunk. As a rule of thumb, WITS detects what /locate can find and nothing more.[1]

Unverified This pack may change WITS's behavior, but no config options, quests or recipes for the mod were available, so I can't confirm any pack-specific changes.

How does WITS (What Is This Structure?) work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This one is a nice change of pace, because WITS has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling to automate. The whole mod is a single command, and that's what makes it so handy for finding out what you're standing in.[1]

The /wits command

Run /wits and it prints the registry names of every structure at the exact spot you're standing on. It works in single player worlds and on servers.[1]

If the mod is installed on a server, every client gets the base /wits command, vanilla clients included. Your friends don't need to install anything to use it.[1]

Operator-only lookups

Operators and server owners can add a dimension and coordinate parameter to the /witsop command. That lets them get structure names at any location in any dimension. Non-operators can't use those extra parameters, which keeps the mod fairly balanced for regular players.[1]

What it can and can't detect

Not every build you come across in a mod counts as a structure, and /wits can only see structures. Vanilla dungeons and desert wells are features, so the command can't detect them. Features save no information about themselves to the chunk, so there's no way to get their names at a specific spot once worldgen is finished.[1]

Tip: A good rule of thumb: if /locate can find it, /wits can detect it. Every structure you can find with /locate is what the mod can detect, and nothing more.[1]

Unverified This pack has no config files for WITS, and nothing in the sources shows it changing the command's behavior or permissions. Treat the behavior described above as the mod's own, not confirmed for this pack.

What changed in WITS (What Is This Structure?) between versions?

1 part

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships WITS (What Is This Structure?) version 1.3.1, using the file wits-neoforge-1.3.1.jar. The mod has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[3]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 1.3.1 (Minecraft 1.21): the structure registry names in the command's output can now be clicked to copy them to your clipboard. This is the version your pack uses.[3][4]
  • 1.3.0 (Minecraft 1.21, NeoForge): the mod was updated to 1.21.[5]

The clickable names in 1.3.1 are handy when you look up a structure and need its exact registry name elsewhere, because you can copy it instead of typing it out.[4]

"From pack files" means the list came from the pack's own files; "from the published release" means ForgeBase read the jars of the release itself.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as wits, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
