What is Magic Coins?
2 parts
Magic Coins is an economy mod that adds a simple coin system to Minecraft. It aims at players who want a more immersive, RPG-style experience, and at pack makers who want to customize villager trades. This pack ships version 1.1.3.[1][2]
What it adds
- Three types of physical coins, which allow player-to-player transactions and support trading, progression and adventure-style play.[1]
- Coin generation in the loot tables of vanilla structures. The mod can disable this through its configuration, and each coin type has its own configurable value.[1]
- An inventory interface with buttons to deposit and withdraw coins. Button positions are adjustable, and optional coin conversion buttons are disabled by default.[1]
- The Prosperity Amulet, a magical artifact that stops you losing the coins stored in your pouch when you die.[1]
How the economy works
Since version 1.1.0, Magic Coins relies on the SG Economy API, which is a required dependency. SG Economy keeps a persistent virtual wallet for each player and handles the economy commands and rules. Magic Coins supplies the item-based gameplay on top of that wallet. The mod page says this setup works for virtual-only economies, such as StoneBlock-style modpacks, and that it can also combine a virtual balance with physical coins.[1]
Unverified The sources do not show whether this pack changes any Magic Coins values, such as coin values, loot generation or the death penalty. They also do not show where the mod fits in the pack's progression. Treat the defaults above as the mod's own, not confirmed pack settings.
How do you get started with Magic Coins?
4 parts
Magic Coins adds a simple RPG-style economy with three physical coins. The sources here show no crafting steps for this mod, so getting started is about finding coins, understanding the inventory buttons and protecting your balance.[1]
Find your first coins
Coins can be obtained from the loot tables of vanilla structures, so exploring and opening chests is a good way to start. This can be disabled via configuration, so if coins do not turn up, that setting is worth checking.[1]
The three coins are silver, gold and crystal. Hover over one to see its tooltip, which shows what that coin is worth. Each coin type has its own configurable value, so check the tooltip rather than assuming a number.[1][3]
Use the inventory buttons
Your inventory screen includes buttons to deposit and withdraw coins. The mod also has optional coin conversion buttons, which are disabled by default. The button positions are adjustable.[1]
Protect your balance
Death costs you money. By default you lose 50% of your balance, which is handled by SG Economy and is configurable. The Prosperity Amulet is the item meant to prevent that loss. Its tooltip says it protects the coins in your pouch if you die, and it also grants regeneration I for 3 seconds when your health is below 50%.[1][3]
What the sources do not show
Unverified The sources here show no recipes that produce this mod's items and no quests that involve it, so how to obtain the Prosperity Amulet in this pack is not confirmed. They also do not show whether the pack changes any coin values, loot settings or death loss settings from the mod's defaults.
How does Magic Coins work?
4 parts
Magic Coins is an economy mod built around three physical coins: the Silver Coin, the Gold Coin and the Crystal Coin. The mechanics come down to coin values, a pouch balance, death penalties and where coins can drop.[1][3]
Coin values
Each coin type has its own configurable value, and hovering a coin shows it as "The value of this coin is $" followed by the number. In this pack all three values are left at the mod defaults.[1][3][4]
- The Silver Coin is worth 1, set by COINS_SILVER.silverMagicValue.[3][4]
- The Gold Coin is worth 50, set by COINS_GOLD.goldMagicValue.[3][4]
- The Crystal Coin is worth 2,500, set by COINS_CRYSTAL.crystalMagicValue.[3][4]
The config warns that in an economic system that only works with integers, values are automatically rounded up, so a value of 1.5 is treated as 2.[4]
The economy behind the coins
The mod's project page says that from version 1.1.0 Magic Coins relies on the SG Economy API, which is a required dependency. That API provides a persistent virtual wallet for each player and handles the economic commands and rules. Magic Coins itself handles the item side, the physical coins. The page says this lets a modpack use a virtual-only economy, or combine a virtual balance with physical coins.[1]
The inventory screen gets buttons to deposit and withdraw coins. The project page says their positions are adjustable and that optional coin conversion buttons exist but are disabled by default. All interface options are configurable.[1]
The page lists the economy commands as balance checks, adding, setting and removing balance, and player-to-player transfers. It says they are intended for server administrators and are handled by SG Economy.[1]
Dying with coins
According to the project page, loss on death is managed by SG Economy. By default you lose 50% of your stored balance when you die, and this is configurable in its config file.[1]
The Prosperity Amulet is the answer to that. Its in-game text says it protects the coins in your pouch if you die. The project page says that with the amulet equipped the death penalty is completely negated.[1][3]
The amulet has a second effect. When your health is below 50%, it grants you regeneration I for 3 seconds.[3]
Finding coins in the world
The mod can add coins to the loot tables of vanilla structures, and this can be disabled in the config. In this pack, LOOTS.coinsLootChests is set to false, so coins are not lootable from chests.[1][4]
The mod also has loot files split by rarity. In this pack the loot_tables list is empty in each of them: loot_tables, loot_tables, loot_tables and loot_tables.[5][6][7][8]
Which Magic Coins config options matter?
3 parts
Magic Coins has a server file for coin values and chest loot, and a client file for the conversion buttons on screen. Here is how this pack sets them. Every value that carries a mod-default note matches that default, so the pack didn't change any of them.[4][9]
Coin values (server)
- COINS_SILVER.silverMagicValue is 1 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[4]
- COINS_GOLD.goldMagicValue is 50 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[4]
- COINS_CRYSTAL.crystalMagicValue is 2,500 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[4]
Each of these has a minimum of 0.01. Be careful with decimals, though. The config warns that in an economy that only works with whole numbers, values are rounded up, so 1.5 counts as 2.[4]
Chest loot
LOOTS.coinsLootChests is set to false in this pack, so coins are not lootable from chests.[4]
The per-rarity loot table lists are also empty in this pack: loot_tables, loot_tables, loot_tables and loot_tables each contain no entries.[5][6][7][8]
Conversion buttons (client)
These are the buttons on your screen for converting coins. The pack enables the main ones: COLLECT_COINS_BUTTON.enableConvertButtons, SILVER_BUTTON.enableSilverButton, GOLD_BUTTON.enableGoldButton and CRYSTAL_BUTTON.enableCrystalButton are all true.[9]
The exchange buttons are turned off: SILVER_FOR_GOLD_BUTTON.enableSilverForGoldButton, GOLD_FOR_SILVER_BUTTON.enableGoldForSilverButton, GOLD_FOR_CRYSTAL_BUTTON.enableGoldForCrystalButton and CRYSTAL_FOR_GOLD_BUTTON.enableCrystalForGoldButton are all false. If you want them, flip the one you need to true in your client config.[9]
Every button position is left at 0 for both X and Y, which matches the mod default. For example, see COLLECT_COINS_BUTTON.xCollectCoins and COLLECT_COINS_BUTTON.yCollectCoins. The crystal button's CRYSTAL_BUTTON.xCrystalButton and CRYSTAL_BUTTON.yCrystalButton each accept a position from -750 to 750.[9]
What changed in Magic Coins between versions?
2 parts
FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Magic Coins 1.1.3, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs for 1.0.9 and 1.1.1.[2][10][11]
Version 1.0.9
This was the big feature update. It added new gameplay and fixed some nasty multiplayer bugs.[10]
- Magnates Ranking: a leaderboard that shows the wealthiest players.[10]
- Command feedback: the add, set and get commands now all return messages. Get is available to every player, while add and set are restricted to admins.[10]
- Coin tooltips: each coin now shows its value directly in the tooltip.[10]
- Prosperity Amulet: if coin loss on death is enabled, it prevents the loss. If that option is disabled, it grants Regeneration I for 3s when you are hit while below 50% HP. Its tooltip now shows the current effect.[10]
- Better mod integration: fixes and adjustments to make the mod easier to use in modpacks and alongside other mods.[10]
The same release fixed ghost coins when joining servers. It also fixed a problem where shutting down the server made the config file fail to load, which brought the ghost coins back. A texture sprite error with FTB Quests was corrected too.[10]
Version 1.1.1
This one is mostly under the hood. The changelog says there are no user-facing gameplay changes, and that it is compatible with existing saves with no manual migration steps.[11]
- Server config sync: the server configuration is now synchronized to clients when the client loads and when a player logs in. The server config also broadcasts changes automatically, and the client reads the synced values instead of touching server-side config.[11]
- Networking cleanup: all packet registration now goes through a single helper called MagicNetwork.[11]
- GUI buttons: button actions were centralized, and custom buttons now support both left-click and right-click actions.[11]
- Dependencies: the sg_economy dependency was updated.[11]
