FramedBlocks is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 10.6.2. Fancy building blocks (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is FramedBlocks?

2 parts

FramedBlocks adds building blocks in lots of shapes (cubes, slopes, slabs, stairs, walls, doors, torches, rails and many more) that can be made to look like almost any other block in the game. This pack includes version 10.6.2 of the mod.[1][2]

Where the quest book puts it

The pack's quest book covers the mod in the quest "Framed Blocks" quest. It sits in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips", which belongs to the group "Forgotten Knowledge" and is chapter 18 of 22 in the book. That chapter has 24 quests, mostly handy utility items and building helpers.[3]

The quest asks you to get three items: the Framed Cube, the Framed Hammer and the Framed Wrench.[3]

The basics

Place down a framed block, then right click it with the block whose texture you want. The framed block copies that texture. Right click with Glowstone Dust and the framed block will produce light.[1][3]

  • Right click a framed block with the Framed Hammer to remove the camo again.[1]
  • The Framed Wrench rotates a framed block. On most blocks, the rotation depends on the face you click.[1]
  • You can also right click with a fluid container to make a framed block look like that fluid, and with an empty fluid container to remove a fluid camo.[1]
Tip: The mod's project page says to enable the experimentalForgeLightPipelineEnabled setting in the forge-client.toml config file to get proper lighting on all shapes. That page describes the mod in general, and the sources don't show whether this pack uses that file, so check it in your own install.[1]

How do you get started with FramedBlocks?

3 parts

Framed Blocks lets you build custom blocks and shapes that copy the texture of almost any other block in the pack. The pack's quest book covers it in "Framed Blocks" quest, in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips" (group "Forgotten Knowledge", chapter 18 of 22). That quest asks for three things: Framed Cube, Framed Hammer and Framed Wrench. Those are the first items to make.[3]

What to make first

  1. Craft the Framed Cube first. The hammer and the wrench are both crafted from it, so everything else builds on it.[3][4]
  2. Craft the Framed Hammer. The quest asks for it, and it is also an ingredient when you turn a Framed Slab or Framed Panel into its centered version.[3][4]
  3. Craft the Framed Wrench, the third item the quest asks for.[3][4]

Giving a framed block its look

Place a framed block, then use the block with the texture you want on it. The texture is copied over. You can also use Glowstone Dust on a framed block to make it glow.[3]

In this pack, applying a texture consumes the item you used, and removing the texture drops it again. This comes from general.consumeCamoItem, which is set to true. Glowing framed blocks emit light level 15, set by general.glowstoneLightLevel.[5]

Watch out: The pack sets general.allowBlockEntities to false, so blocks with block entities can't be placed in framed blocks. Keep that in mind when you plan a build.[5]

Good next steps

Once you have the cube, you can make more shapes from it. Framed Button is made straight from a Framed Cube. Framed Collapsible Copycat Block is also crafted from a Framed Cube.[4]

One thing to know: the pack changed the recipe for Framed Iron Trapdoor, so don't trust the mod's default recipe for it. Use the one below.[4]

Framed Iron TrapdoorChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: framedblocks:framed_iron_trapdoor

This recipe was changed by the pack.

Many shapes can also be made with a Framing Saw, and the pack has a Powered Framing Saw with its own settings. Its power use is 50 per tick (powered_framing_saw.consumption), and each crafting operation takes 30 ticks (powered_framing_saw.craftingDuration). It stores up to 5,000 power (powered_framing_saw.energyCapacity). All of these match the mod defaults.[4][5]

How does FramedBlocks work?

5 parts

FramedBlocks is mostly about one idea: every block is a shaped frame that copies the look of another block, called a camo. There are no big multiblocks here. The one machine is the Powered Framing Saw, which has a few power settings, and the rest is how you apply, change and copy camos.[1][5]

Applying and removing camos

  • Right click a framed block with almost any solid block to make it look like that block.[1]
  • Right click with a fluid container to make the frame look like the fluid inside (1.19 and newer). Right click with an empty fluid container to remove a fluid camo.[1]
  • Right click with glowstone dust to make the frame give off light. In this pack the light level is 15, which is also the mod default (see general.glowstoneLightLevel).[1][5]
  • Right click with a Framed Hammer to remove the camo.[1]
Tip: In this pack general.consumeCamoItem is true. Applying a camo uses up the item, and removing the camo drops it again, so you get the block back when you change your mind.[5]

Tools for adjusting frames

  • The Framed Wrench, or any other item in the wrench tool tag, rotates a framed block. On most blocks the result depends on which face you click.[1]
  • The Framed Screwdriver cycles through the different states of the camo block.[1]
  • The Framed Blueprint copies a framed block including its camo and glowing state. It does not copy the rotation of the framed block itself.[1]
  • Prism corners (Framed Prism, Inner Prism and Double Prism Corners) switch on a texture offset automatically based on where you place them, so larger surfaces line up. Left click the block with the Framed Hammer to toggle the offset if you don't want it.[1]

Some shapes can also be swapped between related forms with a wrench in the crafting grid. For example, the Framed Centered Panel and the Framed Centered Slab convert into each other this way.[4]

What this pack allows

The server config sets a few rules that change how framed blocks behave here. These are the values this pack ships with.[5]

Crafting framed blocks

Most shapes come from the crafting grid, starting with the Framed Cube. Many other shapes are then made from the cube or from other framed blocks.[4]

The Framing Saw and the Powered Framing Saw

A large share of the recipes use a special framing saw recipe type. The recipe dump counts 161 of them, each making a different framed block. Some turn a vanilla item or another framed block into a shape. For example, one takes an activator rail and makes a Framed Activator Rail Slope.[4]

Frame (framedblocks)

Recipe id: framedblocks:framing_saw/framed_activator_rail_slope

Others use plain materials. The Framed Adjustable Double Copycat Panel can be sawn from a copper ingot, and the Framed Fancy Activator Rail can be sawn from a redstone torch plus iron ingots.[4]

The Powered Framing Saw is the only machine in the mod that uses power. This pack leaves all four of its settings at the mod defaults.[5]

Those limits matter for your power setup. The saw accepts at most 250 per tick but only uses 50 while it works, and it holds 5,000 in total.[5]

Unverified How items get into and out of the Powered Framing Saw (for example through pipes or hoppers), and which kind of power it takes, is not confirmed by the sources for this pack.

How do you progress through FramedBlocks?

7 parts

Framed Blocks progression in this pack is a ladder of crafting steps. The quest book gives you one starting quest, and everything after that follows the in-pack recipes. The steps below are my way of grouping them, not tiers the pack defines.[3][4]

Step 1: the quest starter kit

The quest "Framed Blocks" quest sits in the chapter "Useful Items & Tips" (group "Forgotten Knowledge", chapter 18 of 22 in the book). It asks for three items: Framed Cube, Framed Hammer and Framed Wrench. The quest explains the core idea: place a framed block, then use a block with the texture you want on it to copy that texture. It also notes that Glowstone Dust on a framed block makes it glow.[3]

Step 3: shapes that use the Framed Hammer

Once you have the hammer, it shows up in shape recipes for the Framed Centered Panel and the Framed Centered Slab, which build on the Framed Panel and Framed Slab shapes. It is also used in the recipe that gives you Framed Corner Strip from a Framed Floor Board. The recipes are shown below.[4]

Step 4: collapsible and adjustable blocks

The Framed Collapsible Copycat Block is the way into the adjustable copycat shapes. One copycat block crafts into two Framed Adjustable Double Copycat Slab or two Framed Adjustable Double Copycat Panel. In the same way, a Framed Collapsible Block crafts into two Framed Adjustable Double Slab or two Framed Adjustable Double Panel.[4]

Other crafting routes

  • Framing saw recipes: 161 recipes of the framedblocks:frame type produce Framed Blocks items. Their ids are filed under framing_saw, and several shapes have both a normal crafting recipe and one of these.[4]
  • Shape rotation: 44 rotate-shape recipes switch a block between its paired forms, for example Centered Slab and Centered Panel, using a wrench.[4]
  • Phantom Paste has two recipes, one using chorus fruit and one using phantom membrane.[4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use FramedBlocks?

2 parts

In this pack, Framed Blocks has a single quest, "Framed Blocks" quest. You'll find it in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, which is chapter 18 of 22 in the quest book and sits in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group. That chapter is a grab bag of 24 quests about handy items and building tools from many different mods.[3]

What the quest asks for

The quest has three separate item tasks, so you'll want one of each:[3]

What the quest tells you

The quest text explains the core idea: Framed Blocks let you make custom blocks and shapes that use the texture of almost any other block in the pack. Place down a framed block, then use the block with the texture you want on it, and the texture is copied over.[3]

It also points out a neat extra: use Glowstone Dust on a framed block to make it glow.[3]

Tip: This is the only quest in the book for Framed Blocks, and it only asks you to get the three items. The rest of the chapter covers other mods, so you can pick up this quest whenever you start thinking about decorating your base.[3]

Which FramedBlocks config options matter?

4 parts

FramedBlocks has a client config for visuals and HUD stuff, and a server config for gameplay rules. Below is how this pack sets the options you're most likely to touch.[5][6]

Server rules

Powered Framing Saw

If you automate framing with the Powered Framing Saw, all four of its settings match the mod defaults in this pack. Nothing has been tweaked here.[5]

Client visuals

HUD overlays

overlay.maxOverlayMode is DETAILED, and so are the individual overlay settings such as overlay.camoRotationMode, overlay.reinforcedMode and overlay.splitLineMode. Every overlay shows full info. If the HUD feels cluttered, set any of them to ICON or HIDDEN.[6]

What changed in FramedBlocks between versions?

2 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships FramedBlocks 10.6.2, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs for the releases leading up to that version.[2]

Unverified The changelog for FramedBlocks 10.6.2 itself, and any pack changelog entries for this mod, were not available, so changes in that release are unconfirmed.

10.6.x

  • 10.6.1: fixed Layered Cube collision shapes not lining up with the model in horizontal orientations.[7]
  • 10.6.0: added the Framed Axe, which keeps all camos on framed blocks broken with it. This is the big one for moving builds around.[8]
  • 10.6.0: fluid camos can now be oriented.[8]
  • 10.6.0: fixed CopperAgeBackport making Framed Lightning Rods oxidize, and improved the Framed Iron Door item texture.[8]
  • 10.6.0: fixed Inner (Sloped) Prism incorrectly occluding on certain connected textures blocks, and made a attempt at fixing a crash where Croptopia crops checked survivability on framed blocks during worldgen.[8]

10.5.x

  • 10.5.3: fixed a crash with horizontally rotated Compound Slope Panels and added a Brazilian Portuguese translation.[9]
  • 10.5.2: added a Russian translation, and added rotation support to Collapsible Block and Collapsible Copycat Block.[10]
  • 10.5.2: fixed the camo application recipe duping when camo consumption is disabled, and fixed the shape rotation recipe duplicating stackable wrenches.[10]
  • 10.5.2: fixed Double Slabs and Panels only consuming one slab or panel when placed by Create schematics.[10]
  • 10.5.2: fixed Layered Cube consuming multiple camos when placed from an item with a pre-applied camo, and fixed Compound Slope Panel missing slope faces when yslope=true.[10]
  • 10.5.2: fixed connected textures handling on Framed Stairs and certain edge cases on double blocks, plus a crash when a thick lattice is placed on top of or below certain wall-tagged blocks.[10]
  • 10.5.2: fixed the phantom paste not dropping when an intangible framed block is broken via automation, and fixed multi-line details in interact overlays overlapping the icon at high GUI scales.[10]
  • 10.5.1: fixed the Framed Chest reappearing when broken by an Ars Nouveau Touch>Break>Extract spell while crouching.[11]
