What is Deus Ex Machina?

Deus Ex Machina is included in this pack at version 1.0.1, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 1.8.0 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

The clearest hint about where it fits in your progression is the quest book. A quest in the "gearing_up" chapter, a quest in "?", has a task that asks you to obtain the Bottle of Ambrosia. That puts the mod's content in the gearing-up stage of the pack.[2]

Unverified The sources do not describe what Deus Ex Machina actually does, how you get the Bottle of Ambrosia, or whether the pack changed any of the mod's recipes or configs. They also do not show whether the mod is on the ATM Star path. Check these in game before relying on them.

How do you get started with Deus Ex Machina?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Deus Ex Machina doesn't give you a long crafting chain to work through in this pack. The sources I have only confirm one concrete first step, so this section is short.[3]

Your first target: Bottle of Ambrosia

The one thing from this mod that the pack points you at is the Bottle of Ambrosia. It shows up as the task of quest a quest in "?" in the "gearing_up" quest chapter. That placement suggests the pack treats it as part of your early gear progression, so keep an eye on that chapter in your quest book.[3]

What the mod's effect does

The mod adds an effect whose in-game description says it puts you in a state where you are even tougher, and that after you die you become a little tougher still. That's the idea behind the mod: dying isn't purely a setback.[4]

Unverified How you obtain the Bottle of Ambrosia is unconfirmed. No recipe in the sources produces this mod's items, so there is no recipe block here. Check the quest in your quest book for hints. It's also unverified whether the Bottle of Ambrosia is what applies the effect described above, and what exact numbers the effect uses in this pack.

How does Deus Ex Machina work?

4 parts

The sources for this pack show Deus Ex Machina as a mob-toughness effect set up through its config file. They describe no machines, multiblocks, or power, fluid or item handling, so this section covers how that effect is configured here.[5][6]

The effect description reads: "A state in which you are even tougher. After you die, you become a little tougher still". The config splits that toughness into an attack boost and a resistance, and each has its own minimum, maximum, increase step and reset toggle.[5][6]

Which mobs are affected

The list in deusExMobs holds the mobs counted as Deus Ex Machina mobs. It accepts exact ids such as minecraft:zombie, or regex patterns wrapped in slashes. In this pack it is set to a pattern that matches everything from the Cataclysm namespace.[6]

deusMode is set to WHITELIST in this pack, and the other allowed value is BLACKLIST.[6]

Attack boost and resistance values

The pack changed several defaults here, so don't rely on the mod's stock numbers. Both tracks start higher than the mod default and climb faster per step. The cap is the same as the mod default.[6]

Resetting when you kill a mob

Attack-Boost.attackBoostReset and Resistance.resistanceReset are both true in this pack. That means a mob's attack boost or resistance is reset when you kill it. If either were false, that value would keep rising until it hit its cap.[6]

Tip: Because the resets are on, the buildup is tied to each mob. Killing a boosted mob wipes its bonus instead of leaving it to climb toward the cap of 80.[6]

HUD icon and debugging

showIcon is true, so a Deus Ex Machina icon shows on your HUD while the effect is active. debugMode is false; turning it on adds extra logging.[6]

How do you progress through Deus Ex Machina?

1 part

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

Deus Ex Machina has very little structured progression in this pack. The only link I can confirm is one quest in the "gearing_up" chapter, a quest in "?", which has no title. Its task is to obtain Bottle of Ambrosia.[3]

What the quest tells you

Because the quest sits in the gearing_up chapter, the pack seems to treat the Bottle of Ambrosia as part of your early-to-mid gear progression. That placement is all the source shows. It gives no rewards, prerequisites or description.[3]

Unverified How you obtain the Bottle of Ambrosia in this pack is not confirmed. No recipe for it was found, so check in-game, for example in JEI, before planning around it. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Unverified No tier breakdown for this mod could be confirmed, including tier names, unlock order and per-tier recipes. The mod is also not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no further quest chain to follow.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Deus Ex Machina?

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide

In this pack, the only quest I can confirm for this mod is in the "gearing_up" chapter. It's an untitled quest, a quest in "?", and its single task is an item task for the Bottle of Ambrosia.[3]

So if you're following the questbook and hit that quest, you'll need to get hold of a Bottle of Ambrosia to complete it.[3]

Unverified The quest data I have doesn't show where this quest sits in the chapter's order, what its prerequisites are, or whether it rewards anything. It also doesn't say whether the Bottle of Ambrosia is handed in or just needs to be in your inventory. I also can't confirm any other chapters that involve this mod.

Which Deus Ex Machina config options matter?

4 parts

Everything for Deus Ex Machina lives in config/deus_ex_machina-common.toml. This pack changes some values from the mod defaults, and they all push the effect harder, so these are the ones to check first.[6]

Values this pack changed

All of these accept values from 0 to 1,000. The minimum options belong to the Attack Boost and Resistance settings used while Deus Ex Machina is active.[6]

Caps and resets

The caps are not changed. Attack-Boost.maxAttackBoost and Resistance.maxResistance are both 80, which matches the mod default (range 0 to 1,000).[6]

Attack-Boost.attackBoostReset and Resistance.resistanceReset are both true. That means a mob's Attack Boost and Resistance reset when the player kills it. If you set either to false, that stat keeps increasing permanently until it reaches its cap.[6]

Which mobs are affected

deusMode is set to WHITELIST (the other allowed value is BLACKLIST). deusExMobs is the list of mobs treated as Deus Ex Machina mobs. In this pack it holds a single regex entry, /cataclysm:.*/, which matches anything in the cataclysm namespace. The list accepts exact IDs like minecraft:zombie, or regex patterns wrapped in slashes.[6]

Display and debugging

showIcon is true, so the Deus Ex Machina icon shows on your HUD while the effect is active. debugMode is false. Turn it on only if you want extra logging.[6]
