What is Deus Ex Machina?

Deus Ex Machina is part of this pack, which ships version 1.2.0 of the mod (the 1.21.1 build).[1]

The one place the sources show it in your progression is the "gearing_up" quest chapter. There, quest "Deus Ex Machina" quest has a single task: you hand in a Bottle of Ambrosia. Since that quest sits in the gearing-up chapter, the Bottle of Ambrosia is something you are expected to deal with fairly early on your way to better gear.[2]

Tip: If you are chasing that quest, look up the Bottle of Ambrosia first. It is the item the quest asks you to submit.[2]

Unverified The sources I have do not describe what the mod's features do in general, how the Bottle of Ambrosia is obtained, or who the mod is best suited for, so I am not covering those here. The same goes for how the mod fits into the rest of the pack's progression beyond that single quest.

How do you get started with Deus Ex Machina?

2 parts

Deus Ex Machina doesn't give you a long crafting chain to work through in this pack. The sources I have only confirm one concrete first step, so this section is short.[2]

Your first target: Bottle of Ambrosia

The one thing from this mod that the pack points you at is the Bottle of Ambrosia. It shows up as the task of quest "Deus Ex Machina" quest in the "gearing_up" quest chapter. That placement suggests the pack treats it as part of your early gear progression, so keep an eye on that chapter in your quest book.[2]

What the mod's effect does

The mod adds an effect whose in-game description says it puts you in a state where you are even tougher, and that after you die you become a little tougher still. That's the idea behind the mod: dying isn't purely a setback.[3]

Unverified How you obtain the Bottle of Ambrosia is unconfirmed. No recipe in the sources produces this mod's items, so there is no recipe block here. Check the quest in your quest book for hints. It's also unverified whether the Bottle of Ambrosia is what applies the effect described above, and what exact numbers the effect uses in this pack.

How does Deus Ex Machina work?

3 parts

Deus Ex Machina is not a machine or multiblock mod as far as the pack's sources show. What they describe is a status effect that makes you tougher, plus a small config that controls how its bonuses reset.[3][4]

The effect

The mod's effect is described as a state in which you are even tougher. After you die, you become a little tougher still.[3]

Resets when you kill a mob

The options attackBoostReset and resistanceReset decide what happens to the Attack Boost and Resistance bonuses when a mob is killed by the player. Each accepts FULL, PARTIAL or NONE.[4]

  • FULL resets the bonus to its minimum.[4]
  • PARTIAL reduces the bonus by the increase value.[4]
  • NONE keeps the current value.[4]

This pack sets both options to FULL. When you kill a mob, the Attack Boost and Resistance bonuses go back to their minimum.[4]

Tip: These are only the default reset behaviors. The config says they can be overridden per mob with datapacks, using files at data/<namespace>/deus_mobs/<name>.json. If a particular mob behaves differently from what you expect, a datapack override could be the reason.[4]

HUD and debugging

  • showIcon is true in this pack, so the mod's icon shows on your HUD while the effect is active.[4]
  • debugMode is false in this pack. Turning it on enables additional logging.[4]

How do you progress through Deus Ex Machina?

1 part

Deus Ex Machina has very little structured progression in this pack. The only link I can confirm is one quest in the "gearing_up" chapter, "Deus Ex Machina" quest, which has no title. Its task is to obtain Bottle of Ambrosia.[2]

What the quest tells you

Because the quest sits in the gearing_up chapter, the pack seems to treat the Bottle of Ambrosia as part of your early-to-mid gear progression. That placement is all the source shows. It gives no rewards, prerequisites or description.[2]

Unverified How you obtain the Bottle of Ambrosia in this pack is not confirmed. No recipe for it was found, so check in-game, for example in JEI, before planning around it. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Unverified No tier breakdown for this mod could be confirmed, including tier names, unlock order and per-tier recipes. The mod is also not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no further quest chain to follow.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Deus Ex Machina?

In this pack, the only quest I can confirm for this mod is in the "gearing_up" chapter. It's an untitled quest, "Deus Ex Machina" quest, and its single task is an item task for the Bottle of Ambrosia.[2]

So if you're following the questbook and hit that quest, you'll need to get hold of a Bottle of Ambrosia to complete it.[2]

Unverified The quest data I have doesn't show where this quest sits in the chapter's order, what its prerequisites are, or whether it rewards anything. It also doesn't say whether the Bottle of Ambrosia is handed in or just needs to be in your inventory. I also can't confirm any other chapters that involve this mod.

Which Deus Ex Machina config options matter?

2 parts

Deus Ex Machina keeps its settings in config/deus_ex_machina-common.toml. The options cover how your buffs reset after kills, whether a HUD icon shows, and a debug switch.[4]

Reset behavior

The reset options decide what happens to your boost when you kill a mob. Each accepts NONE, FULL or PARTIAL. FULL resets the value to its minimum, PARTIAL reduces it by the increase value, and NONE keeps your current value.[4]

  • attackBoostReset is set to FULL in this pack. When you kill a mob, your Attack Boost resets to its minimum.[4]
  • resistanceReset is also set to FULL in this pack. Killing a mob resets your Resistance to its minimum.[4]
Tip: These options only set the default reset behavior. They can be overridden per mob with datapacks, using files at data/<namespace>/deus_mobs/<name>.json. If a specific mob doesn't reset the way you expect, check for a datapack entry like that.[4]

HUD and logging

  • showIcon is true in this pack, so the Deus Ex Machina icon shows on your HUD while the effect is active. Set it to false if you want it hidden.[4]
  • debugMode is false in this pack. Turning it on enables additional logging.[4]
