Cooking for Blockheads is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 21.1.24. Adds a multiblock kitchen that shows recipes you can make with what ingredients you have available. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Cooking for Blockheads?

1 part

This pack includes Cooking for Blockheads 21.1.24, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It adds kitchen-themed blocks such as the Cooking Table, the Fridge, the Oven and the Sink.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book places this mod in the "gearing_up" chapter. The first quest there, "The Kitchen Multiblock" quest, asks you to obtain a Cooking Table and lists further item tasks that the sources here do not name.[2]

Every other kitchen quest in that chapter comes after that first one:[2]

Tip: The last item task in that final quest accepts the ice unit, the heating unit or the preservation chamber, so you only need to hand in whichever one of them you find easiest.[2]

Unverified The quest sources here do not show whether the ATM Star path uses this mod, so check the pack's quest book in-game if that matters to you.

How do you get started with Cooking for Blockheads?

4 parts

Welcome to the kitchen! In this pack, Cooking for Blockheads centres on the Cooking Table, and the quest chapter "gearing_up" walks you through the next few kitchen pieces. Here's the order I'd go in.[2][3]

First: the book and the Cooking Table

The Cooking Table enables crafting abilities, and it is the quest "The Kitchen Multiblock" quest in the "gearing_up" chapter. The other quests in that chapter that use this mod all come after it. The table's recipe uses Cooking for Blockheads II, which lets you craft food with what you have available, so that book is your real starting point.[2][3][4]

Next: the core kitchen blocks

  • Once the table is done, "Kitchen Appliances" quest is your next kitchen quest, and it unlocks right after the Cooking Table quest. It also wants one of three upgrade units, covered below.[2]
  • The Sink is one of its tasks. It provides water to recipes.[2][4]
  • The Fridge is another task. It stores ingredients for recipes.[2][4]
  • The Oven is the third. It enables smelting abilities.[2][4]

Heads up: the pack changed the Sink recipe, so it isn't the mod's default. Use the recipe below rather than what you remember from other packs.[3]

Then: pick an upgrade unit

The same quest accepts any one of three units. The Ice Unit provides snow and ice to recipes. The Heating Unit lets you heat an oven using energy. The Preservation Chamber stops the last item in a slot from being used up. Choose whichever fits your setup.[2][4]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

6 parts

The block tooltips describe a kitchen where each block has one job, such as storing ingredients, providing water, or enabling crafting. The crafting book is described as letting you craft food with what you have available.[4]

The recipe books

Cooking for Blockheads I shows you the food you can make right now. Cooking for Blockheads II goes a step further and lets you craft food with what you have available. In this pack the upgrade is a crafting recipe that uses the first book.[3][4]

In the book, you click a recipe and then click again to craft one. Shift-Click crafts a stack, and for cooked items Shift-Click cooks a stack. When something is missing, the book tells you what: ingredients, tools, an oven, or a cooking pot. You can also sort recipes by hunger restored.[4]

Building the kitchen

The tooltip of the Cooking Table says it enables crafting abilities. In this pack it is crafted using the second book.[3][4]

The oven's tooltip says it enables smelting abilities. If no oven is found, the book shows the message "Missing oven to cook".[4]

The tooltip of Kitchen Counter says it stores ingredients for recipes. The tooltip of Kitchen Cabinet says it can be placed on the wall above kitchen blocks. The fridge is described as storing ingredients too. Other blocks in the mod are described as storing specific things: a spice rack holds spices and ingredients, a fruit basket holds fruits, and a tool rack provides tools to recipes.[3][4]

Utility blocks

  • The sink's tooltip says it provides water to recipes.[4]
  • The milk jar is described as providing milk to recipes, and the cow jar as slowly producing milk for them.[4]
  • The ice unit is described as providing snow and ice to recipes.[4]
  • The tooltip of Cutting Board says it provides a cutting board for recipes.[3][4]
  • The heating unit is described as allowing you to heat an oven using energy, and a tooltip shows the energy stored.[4]
  • The preservation chamber is described as preventing the last item of a slot from being used up.[4]
  • The toaster is described as magically turning bread into toast.[4]

Connecting blocks

Colours

You recolour kitchen blocks by crafting them with a dye. In this pack there are shapeless dye recipes for cabinets, connectors, cooking tables, counters, fridges, ovens and sinks, for example black, blue and brown. Kitchen floors work differently: you dye the base floor, for example into Cyan Kitchen Floor.[3]

Automation and options

The mod has settings that change how the kitchen behaves. One can close the oven to automation, so pipes and similar systems cannot insert or extract. Another makes the sink need piped-in water instead of providing infinite water. A third gives kitchen counters twice the inventory space. There are also multipliers for oven cooking time and fuel time: higher cooking values mean slower cooking, and higher fuel values mean longer-lasting fuel. One more option, which needs Pam's Harvestcraft, restricts oven fuel to cooking oil.[4]

A cow can be squished into a milk jar by dropping an anvil on top, if that option is enabled. The cow jar has a setting for how much milk it generates per tick, plus a multiplier for Ex Compressum's Compressed Cow in a Jar. The recipe book can also exclude specific recipe ids.[4]

Unverified No config files for this mod are available as a source here, so whether oven automation, the sink's water requirement, large counters, the cow jar or the oven multipliers are changed from the mod's defaults is not shown. Check in game before you build an automated setup.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

In this pack, Cooking for Blockheads progression is a short quest chain in the gearing_up chapter. Each step unlocks more kitchen furniture, and everything below follows that chain, starting from the Cooking Table.[2]

Start: the Cooking Table

The chain opens with "The Kitchen Multiblock" quest, which asks you to obtain the Cooking Table. It also lists further item tasks, but the sources here don't show which items they are.[2]

The Cooking Table recipe uses the upgraded book, Cooking for Blockheads II (Cooking for Blockheads II). That book has its own recipe, which builds on Cooking for Blockheads I (Cooking for Blockheads I).[3]

Once the Cooking Table quest is done, several quests unlock. Each of them only requires the first quest, so you can take them in any order.[2]

After the quests: colors

Once the quests are done, the pack still has recipes for recoloring your kitchen. Cooking Tables, Sinks, Fridges, Ovens, Counters, Cabinets and Connectors can be dyed with a shapeless recipe, for example into the Blue Cooking Table or the Black Oven. Kitchen Floors use their own dye recipes, starting from the Kitchen Floor.[3]

Tip: Dyed a Cooking Table or Sink the wrong color? Bone meal removes the dye and gives you the plain version back.[3]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work with other mods?

2 parts

The one link between Cooking for Blockheads and another mod that the pack's recipes confirm is the ME Kitchen Station, the ME Kitchen Station. It is crafted from ME parts together with Cooking for Blockheads items.[3]

ME Kitchen Station

The recipe is a shaped crafting recipe that mixes items from the ae2 namespace with items from the cookingforblockheads namespace. The ME side includes the 16k ME Storage Component, the ME Chest and the Engineering Processor, so you will be working with ME storage and processors for this one.[3]

The in-pack shaped recipe for the ME Kitchen Station, using items from both mods.

Quests

The quests that use this mod's items sit in the gearing_up chapter, and the ones with item ids shown only ask for Cooking for Blockheads items. "The Kitchen Multiblock" quest starts with the Cooking Table, and three quests unlock after it: "Free Milk!" quest for the Cow in a Jar, "Kitchen Extras" quest and "Kitchen Appliances" quest.[2]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Cooking for Blockheads?

2 parts

In this pack, Cooking for Blockheads appears in the "gearing_up" quest chapter. The quests start with the cooking basics and then branch out into the rest of the kitchen.[2]

The starter quest

Quest "The Kitchen Multiblock" quest is the entry point. Its first task is to obtain the Cooking Table, and it has further item tasks after that. Every other Cooking for Blockheads quest in the chapter unlocks after this quest.[2]

What unlocks after it

Once the starter quest is done, the remaining quests open up. The quest data only sets them to come after the starter quest, so you can take them in whatever order suits you.[2]

Tip: The rack and basket quest and the last task of the sink, fridge and oven quest only need an item from a short list, so pick whichever is cheapest or most useful for your base.[2]
