What is Bonsai Trees 4?
2 parts
Bonsai Trees 4 is a tree-themed mod, and this pack ships version 4.0.9. Its in-game book describes it as teaching you the art of Bonsai Trees, and the Bonsai Pot is the item the quest book asks you to make.[1][2][3]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book puts this mod in the getting_started chapter. The quest "Bonsai Trees" quest has no title, and its tasks are to hand in a clay ball and a Bonsai Pot. It comes after the quest "More Smashing" quest in that same chapter. So you meet the pot among your first steps in the pack.[3]
The in-game guide
The mod comes with its own in-game guide, The Book of Trees. It has a Minecraft Trees section about the trees in vanilla Minecraft.[2][4]
That section has an entry for each of these vanilla trees: acacia, azalea, birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, oak and spruce. Each entry is split into "In Minecraft", which covers where the tree is found and what it looks like, and "On Earth", which covers the real-life tree. It makes a handy quick reference if you want to know which biome a tree comes from.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
Unverified The sources here do not show whether this mod is used by the ATM Star path. Check the pack's quest book for that.
How do you get started with Bonsai Trees 4?
3 parts
Welcome to Bonsai Trees 4 in this pack. The first thing to make is the Bonsai Pot, and the pack's quest book points you at it straight away.[3][14]
Make a Bonsai Pot
The quest "Bonsai Trees" quest sits in the getting_started chapter and comes after quest 193690C049F4B4BB. Its tasks are to get a clay ball and a Bonsai Pot.[3]
This is the in-pack crafting recipe for the Bonsai Pot, and it uses any item from the bricks tag.
Switch pot sizes
There is also a Small Bonsai Pot. In this pack the recipes that make it convert a Bonsai Pot into the small version, and the reverse recipe turns it back.[14]

Learn how the pot behaves
The mod's own tooltips tell you a few useful things about the pot. You insert a tool to harvest, decorating the pot is optional, and enchanting the pot improves its performance.[15]
How does Bonsai Trees 4 work?
5 parts
Everything in Bonsai Trees 4 revolves around the pot. You get the full-size Bonsai Pot and the Small Bonsai Pot, and both come in an enchanted version as well. The pot is where a tree grows, where a tool does the cutting, and where the drops end up in an output inventory.[14][15][16]
Crafting and resizing pots
The base recipe for the full-size Bonsai Pot.
You do not need to craft the small pot from scratch. Conversion recipes let a Bonsai Pot become a Small Bonsai Pot and back again.[14]

The pot also has an optional decoration slot. The mod's own tooltip describes it simply as optional pot decoration.[15]
Growing
A pot works with a sapling and a soil. The mod's tooltips tell you when a pairing does not work: a sapling can show that it has no valid soils, and a soil can show that it has no valid bonsais. If a pot shows that production is on hold, it is not producing at that moment.[15]
Growth time is set by gameplay.baseGrowTicks. A bonsai tree that has no custom grow time of its own uses this value. In this pack it is 200 ticks, which is the same as the mod default.[15][16]
Harvesting with a tool
A pot needs a tool to harvest: the mod's tooltip tells you to insert a tool. Cutting a bonsai can wear the tool down, but only some of the time.[15]
- gameplay.toolDamageChance is the chance that the tool takes damage when cutting. The pack uses 0.3333333432674408, the mod default.[16]
- gameplay.toolDamagePerCut is how much damage the tool takes when that chance hits. The pack uses 1, the mod default.[15][16]
- gameplay.cutCooldown matters when the drops do not fit into the output inventory. The server waits this many ticks before it tries to cut again. The pack uses 20, the mod default.[15][16]
If the pot says it cannot insert items, the items you are trying to put in are not accepted.[15]
Enchanted pots and redstone
Enchanted pots exist in both sizes. The mod's tooltip says you can enchant a pot to improve its performance. The sources here do not give the exact effect.[15]
The pot also displays a redstone status, either Enabled or Disabled.[15]
Debug and JEI options
The debug options deal with what is shown in tooltips and JEI. debug.showChances is true in this pack. The mod warns that these chances are estimated from loot tables and are not reliable, because many factors that affect the real chances are not counted. The remaining options are off in the pack: debug.showRollsAsCountInJEI, debug.showUnknownLootConditions and debug.showUnusedSoilRecipesInJEI.[15][16]
Unverified Which saplings work on which soils, and what each bonsai drops, comes from the mod's data files (soil recipes and loot tables). The sources here do not show those files, so check the JEI entries in game for the exact pairings. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you progress through Bonsai Trees 4?
3 parts
In this pack, Bonsai Trees 4 progression centres on the Bonsai Pot. The quest book and the recipes show how you get one and how you change its size.[3][14]
The getting started quest
The mod appears in the getting_started chapter through quest "Bonsai Trees" quest. Its tasks ask you to hand in an Clay Ball and a Bonsai Pot. The quest unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter, so you reach it as part of the normal early questing flow.[3]
Craft your first pot
The Bonsai Pot is a shaped crafting recipe from the mod. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[14]
This is the recipe the getting started quest expects you to use for its pot task.
Pick your pot size
The mod has a regular Bonsai Pot and a Small Bonsai Pot. You can convert between them with special crafting recipes, so you never need to build a second pot from scratch.[14]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Bonsai Trees 4?
In this pack, Bonsai Trees 4 shows up in just one quest, in the Getting Started chapter.[3]
The quest is "Bonsai Trees" quest, and it has no title of its own. Its tasks are item tasks: you need a Clay Ball and a Bonsai Pot.[3]
As for order, this quest comes after another quest in the same Getting Started chapter, so you need to finish that earlier quest before the Bonsai Pot quest opens up.[3]
Which Bonsai Trees 4 config options matter?
3 parts
Bonsai Trees 4 has a short list of options worth knowing about, split between a common file and a client file. In the gameplay settings, every value that lists a mod default is set to that default in this pack, so growth speed and tool damage are not tweaked.[16]
Gameplay options
- gameplay.baseGrowTicks is the base number of ticks a bonsai tree takes to grow. The pack sets it to 200, which is the mod default.[16]
- gameplay.cutCooldown only matters when a tree has been cut but its drops don't fit in the output inventory. It sets how many ticks to wait before trying again. The pack uses 20, the mod default.[16]
- gameplay.toolDamageChance is the chance that your tool takes damage when cutting a bonsai tree. The pack uses 0.3333333432674408, the mod default, and the allowed range is 0.0 to 1.0.[16]
- gameplay.toolDamagePerCut is how much damage the tool takes when that damage happens. The pack sets it to 1, again the mod default.[16]
- gameplay.toolAllowIndestructible is set to true in the pack. That means indestructible tools, like those from Mystical Agriculture, can be used in bonsai pots.[16]
Tooltip and JEI display options
debug.showChances is true in the pack, so you'll see drop chances in tooltips. The other debug options are all false: debug.showRollsAsCountInJEI, debug.showUnknownLootConditions and debug.showUnusedSoilRecipesInJEI.[16]
Client options
- client.showTreesInSaplingTooltip is true, so sapling tooltips show the tree model.[17]
- client.showJEISubtypes is false, so JEI doesn't show all trees as separate entries.[17]
- client.disableModelCache and client.minimalQuads are both false. They are rendering options: one disables the model cache and the other uses minimal quads for rendering.[17]
