What is Summoning Rituals?
1 part
Summoning Rituals is a tool for modpack developers. It lets them create custom summoning rituals that work with items, mobs and commands. The recipes are highly customizable, so each pack can offer its own experience. Custom events, renderers and block patterns can extend what a ritual does.[1]
The mod does not add any recipes by default, so any ritual you find in a pack has to be defined by the pack. The mod has native KubeJS integration, which is the easiest way to create custom recipes.[1]
This pack includes Summoning Rituals version 1.21.1-3.14.2, built for NeoForge. It has been part of the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Unverified The sources here do not show a quest chapter or group for this mod, what comes before or after it, or whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the pack's quest book directly for any placement.
How do you get started with Summoning Rituals?
2 parts
Everything in Summoning Rituals starts with one block: the Summoning Altar. The mod does not add any recipes by default, and the altar's crafting recipe in this pack is added by the pack itself. That makes the altar your first craft.[1][3]

This altar recipe is added by the pack, not by the mod.
Using your first altar
- Craft the altar with the recipe above and place it in the world.[3]
- Put the items a ritual needs into the altar. It has 16 slots in this pack, the same as the mod default.[4]
- Insert the initiator item last. The altar's own hint says to insert last to start the ritual.[5]
- If a ritual needs a block pattern around the altar, click the altar to show a preview in the world. When the pattern is right, the game tells you it is complete.[5]
If nothing happens
The altar tells you what is wrong. You may see that the block pattern around it is not correct, that some required item inputs are missing, or that not all sacrifices were found. Other messages say that not all conditions were met, that no recipes exist for the initiator, or that more than one recipe matches it.[5]
When a ritual runs a command as its output, the log can announce it, because announce_command is set to true in this pack. That helps you see where a command came from.[4]
How does Summoning Rituals work?
4 parts
The Summoning Rituals mod is built around one block: the Summoning Altar. You put items into the Altar, build the right block pattern around it, and start a ritual. The mod adds no recipes of its own. Every ritual comes from the modpack, and the mod's KubeJS integration is the way pack makers create them.[1]
Getting the Altar
In this pack the Altar is a normal shaped crafting recipe that the pack added. The mod also has an Indestructible Summoning Altar, but the sources don't show how you obtain it, so I can't tell you more about it.[3][5]

How a ritual runs
The mod's own text tells you the key rule: insert last to start the ritual. The last item you put in is the one that starts it, and the mod calls it the initiator. If no recipe uses that item as an initiator, you get a message saying no recipes were found for it. If more than one recipe matches the same initiator, the mod tells you that instead.[5]
When you try to start, the mod checks several things, and each one has its own failure message:[5]
- The block pattern around the Altar has to be correct, otherwise you are told the pattern is wrong.[5]
- All the required item inputs have to be inside the Altar, otherwise some inputs are reported as missing.[5]
- Any sacrifices the ritual asks for have to be found, otherwise you are told not all sacrifices were found.[5]
- Any other conditions on the ritual have to be met, otherwise you get a message that not all conditions were met.[5]
- A ritual that is already running can't be started again, and the mod tells you it is in progress.[5]
Previewing the block pattern
You don't have to guess the pattern. The mod has a preview that you start by clicking, and it shows the pattern in the world. It previews on the nearest Altar, and if there is no Altar in range you are told so. When your build matches, the mod says the block pattern is complete.[5]
Altar inventory and config
The Altar holds the items for the ritual in its own inventory. The pack sets inventory_size to 16 slots, which is also the mod default. The allowed range is 1 to 64.[4]
The other option, announce_command, is true in this pack. When a ritual's output runs a command, the game announces it in the log. That helps you work out where a mysterious command came from.[4]
The sources I have don't list this pack's specific rituals, their patterns or their outputs, so I can't describe them here.[1]
How do you progress through Summoning Rituals?
The one thing the pack's recipe data confirms for Summoning Rituals is how you get the Summoning Altar. Its crafting recipe is a shaped one that the pack adds itself, so follow the recipe below rather than anything you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | any bone | Empty slot |
| any wooden slab |
Recipe id: summoningrituals:altar
This shaped recipe for the Summoning Altar is added by the pack.
The recipe accepts any item from the bones tag and any wooden slab, so you aren't tied to one specific type of either.[3]
Unverified The sources here do not show any quest that involves this mod, and they do not describe any ritual recipes or tiers for it in the pack. That means I can't lay out a tier-by-tier progression or say where the quest book places it.
Which Summoning Rituals config options matter?
3 parts
Summoning Rituals has a common config and a client config. Every option here that lists a mod default is left at that default in this pack. The options below are how the pack sets them, and none of them is a confirmed change from the mod default.[4][6]
Altar and command settings
- inventory_size is 16 slots for the Altar's inventory, the same as the mod default. It can be set anywhere from 1 to 64. If you change it, you need to break and replace existing Altars for it to apply.[4]
- announce_command is true. When a recipe output command is invoked, it is announced in the log, which helps you tell where a command came from.[4]
Block pattern preview
These client options control how long the block pattern preview shows and how it finds your Altar. All of them are at the mod default.[6]
- preview.preview_ticks_per_block is 60 ticks per block (range 1 to 100).[6]
- preview.preview_ticks_min is 200 ticks (range 10 to 1,200) and preview.preview_ticks_max is 1,200 ticks (range 10 to 6,000). These are the shortest and longest the preview will run.[6]
- preview.altar_search_radius is 16, the maximum distance to search for an Altar when previewing the pattern (range 1 to 64).[6]
- preview.blocks_as_recipe_viewer_usages is true. The blocks of the pattern are registered in recipe viewers as usages, so you can look up a pattern block to find the Altar recipe.[6]
- preview.preview_block_state_aware is false. The preview only checks that the block is correct, not its exact block state.[6]
Visuals
- general.candle_particles is true, so the fire particles on the candles of Altars are rendered.[6]
- general.inventory_render_distance is 32, the maximum distance at which an Altar renders its inventory contents. It is the mod default, and the range is 1 to 128.[6]
What changed in Summoning Rituals between versions?
1 part
FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships with Summoning Rituals version 1.21.1-3.14.2. The mod was already in the pack by Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a long time.[2]
Recent mod changes
- 1.21.1-3.14.2 (the version in this pack): the actual initiator stack is now exposed in the recipe info for events.[2][7]
- 1.21.1-3.14.1: fixed class loading issues that broke recipe viewers when KubeJS is not installed.[8]
There are no pack changelog entries that mention this mod, so nothing in the pack's own release notes changed its recipes or values.[2]
