What is Redstone Pen?
2 parts
Redstone Pen is all about making redstone wiring neater and more compact. The pack includes version 1.11.42 of the mod.[1][2]
Its main tools are the Redstone Quill and the Redstone Pen, which you use to draw and remove thin redstone tracks. You can fit several independent tracks through one block space. The Quill pulls redstone dust straight from your inventory. The Pen stores redstone inside the item, and you refill it in the crafting grid with Redstone Dust or Redstone Blocks. Sneak while holding either one and look at a block, track, wire or device to inspect its current signal.[1]
Tracks normally do not connect to the block they are drawn on. If you want one to power the block underneath, click the centre of the track with a Pen to add an explicit connector. Tracks also don't pass indirect power through blocks to other tracks, so independent routes don't interfere with each other.[1]
Relays and logic control
The mod also adds relays: placeable blocks that re-power a redstone signal back up to 15. They output only to the front. The types are the Redstone Relay, Inverted Redstone Relay, Bi-Stable Redstone Relay, Pulse Redstone Relay and Bridging Relay, which lets tracks cross. On top of that there is a text-code Redstone Logic Control, a simplified PLC-style signal controller.[1]
Where the quest book puts it
The pack's quest book covers this mod with one entry that I can see, "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest, and it is about the Redstone Remote rather than the pen. It sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, which is chapter 2 of 31 in the book and holds 30 quests. The quest says you left-click a device such as a lever or button with the Remote to save its frequency, then right-click to toggle it from any distance. The chunk with the redstone must be loaded and in the same dimension.[3]
That chapter is a grab bag of handy items and tips, not a progression line, and this mod is not on the ATM Star path. One quest in the chapter is not covered here for lack of room, so check the quest book itself for it.[3]
How do you get started with Redstone Pen?
5 parts
Redstone Pen is all about drawing thin redstone tracks exactly where you want them, then re-powering and controlling signals with relays and a small logic controller. The crafts below take you from your first track to wireless control, in the order I'd make them.[1]
Make a Redstone Quill first
Start with the Redstone Quill. It draws and removes thin redstone tracks and takes redstone dust straight from your inventory, so there is nothing to refill. Several independent tracks can share one block space.[1]
Upgrade to a Redstone Pen
The Redstone Pen does the same job, but it stores redstone inside the item instead of pulling dust from your inventory. You refill it in the crafting grid with redstone dust or redstone blocks.[1][4]

Craft a Redstone Relay
Next, make a Redstone Relay. It re-powers a signal back up to 15. Unlike a repeater it has no switch-on delay, but it has a switch-off delay of one tick. Output goes only to the front, and inputs come in from every side except above.[1]

The other relays are made by crafting one relay into the next. The Inverted Redstone Relay comes from the Redstone Relay, the Bi-Stable Redstone Relay from the Inverted one, the Pulse Redstone Relay from the Bi-Stable one, and the Bridging Redstone Relay from the Pulse one. The Bridging Relay can be turned back into a plain Redstone Relay.[4]

Go wireless with the Redstone Remote
The Redstone Remote is covered by the quest "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest, found in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter, which is chapter 2 of 31 in the quest book. Left-click a device such as a lever or button to save its frequency, then right-click to toggle it from any distance. The chunk with the redstone must be loaded and in the same dimension.[3]

Handy extras
- Basic Lever and Basic Button are described as fitting basically everywhere, which is great for tight builds.[5]
- Basic Pulse Button emits a redstone signal for one tick.[5]
- Basic Redstone Gauge is a full-block glass gauge that shows the redstone signal it receives, and it insulates signals.[5]
- Redstone Logic Control is a simplified PLC-like controller that you program with text expressions. Crafting it needs a Redstone Quill.[4][5]

How does Redstone Pen work?
7 parts
Redstone Pen is all about redstone signals: drawing thin tracks, re-laying signals with relays, and programming a small controller. Here is how each piece behaves in the pack.[1]
Drawing tracks with the pen and quill
The Redstone Quill draws tracks using Redstone dust straight from your inventory. The Redstone Pen stores redstone inside the item instead, and you refill it in the crafting grid with Redstone Dust or Redstone Blocks. Both let you draw or remove thin Redstone Tracks, and several independent tracks can run through the same block space.[1]

Refill the pen with a Redstone Block by combining two pens with the block.
- The pen's help text says right-click places a track and left-click removes one, and that sneaking allows center-connectors.[5]
- Sneak while looking at a block, track, wire or device to see the redstone signal it currently has. This works with both the pen and the quill.[1][5]
- Left-clicking does not destroy blocks, except blocks with no hardness, like grass, repeaters or comparators.[1]
Tracks normally do not power the block they are drawn on. If you want that, click the center of a track with the pen to place a connector there, and click it again to remove it. Tracks also do not pass indirect power through blocks to other tracks, so you can feed the same block from independent routes without them interfering.[1][5]
Relays
Relays work like redstone-powered solenoids that move built-in Redstone Torches back and forth, so they re-power a signal at strength 15. You can place them on solid faces in any direction. Output goes only to the front, and inputs come from every side except above. Relays also detect indirect power from the block they sit on, which makes them handy for passing track signals through blocks.[1][5]
- Redstone Relay: per its help text, it takes input from the back and sides and switches on immediately. Its switch-off delay is one redstone tick, and it also accepts indirect input power from tracks.[1][5]
- Inverted Redstone Relay: per its help text, it takes input from the back and sides, and the output is inverted: 0 if there is an input signal, 15 if not.[5]
- Bi-Stable Redstone Relay: per its help text, it takes input from the back and sides and switches on and off when it detects an off-to-on rising edge.[1][5]
- Pulse Redstone Relay: per its help text, it emits a pulse of one redstone tick at the output when it detects a rising edge.[1][5]
- Bridging Redstone Relay: forwards power from back to front like a normal relay, and adds an independent wire from left to right, so you can cross tracks.[1][5]
Swapping between relay types
In this pack the relay types are converted into each other in the crafting grid, one step at a time, in a loop. You craft the basic relay first, then step through the chain:[4]

Gauge, buttons and levers
- Basic Redstone Gauge: per its help text, a simple full-block glass gauge that shows the redstone signal it receives. It also insulates signals.[5]
- Basic Button and Basic Lever: their help text describes both as basically fitting everywhere, with a hopeful "hopefully".[5]
- Basic Pulse Button: its help text says it emits a redstone signal for one tick.[5]
Redstone Logic Control
The help text describes the Redstone Logic Control (the RLC) as a simplified PLC-like controller that provides digital (ON/OFF) and analog redstone input and output in all directions. Its ports are named after the first letters of Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Up and Down, so R, B, Y, G, U and D.[1][5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: redstonepen:control_box_recipe
You program it with math expressions. All code lines are calculated in the same tick: read inputs, calculate, write outputs. Code is case insensitive, and you can create your own variables, which keep their values until the RLC is stopped. Parse errors are marked (hover them) and stop the program from starting. Use the RUN/STOP button to start or stop, and hover the RLC symbol to see variable values while it runs. There are also buttons to copy and paste code through the clipboard.[5]
Writing expressions
- Per the in-game help, every line is an assignment like "R = G & B", and "#" turns the rest of a line into a comment.[5]
- Per the in-game help, assigning to a port variable makes it an output, and input changes there are ignored. Using a port in an expression, when it is not already an output, makes it an input.[5]
- Per the in-game help, the ".CO" suffix reads the comparator output of an adjacent block, for example "Y = MAX( B.CO, R, g.co, MyVar )". Comparator outputs are never RLC outputs, even if you assign them.[5]
- Per the in-game help, arithmetic is integer only, so "A * 1.5" is not accepted and divisions round toward zero. The operators are +, -, *, / and % (modulo). Port values are clamped to the redstone range 0..15, and division by zero yields 0.[5]
- Per the in-game help, comparisons (==, !=, >=, <=, >, <) give 0 for false and 15 for true. Logic operators (AND, OR, XOR, NOT, plus the symbol forms) treat anything above 0 as true and give 0 or 15. There are no bitwise operations.[5]
- Per the in-game help, the ".RE" suffix is 15 for one tick when an input goes from OFF to ON, and ".FE" does the same for ON to OFF. Edges are still detected on input ports even when the RLC does not run every tick.[5]
Timers, counters and functions
- Timers: TON (switch-on delay), TOF (switch-off delay) and TP (pulse on a rising edge, ignoring changes during the pulse). There are 5 instances of each type, such as "A = TON3( INPUT_TERM, ON_DELAY_TICKS )". Timer settings can be changed while the timers are active.[5]
- Counters: the in-game help lists five up-down counters, CNT1 to CNT5, with optional down, minimum, maximum and reset arguments. For event counting it suggests feeding them signal edges like G.RE. They are not guaranteed to be tick accurate, so use timers for timing.[5]
- Functions: the in-game help's function reference lists IF, INV, MAX, MIN, MEAN, LIM, TIME, CLOCK and RND. The interval blocks TIV1, TIV2 and TIV3 pulse every T ticks, optionally with an enable input, and the minimum interval is 3 ticks.[5]
How do you progress through Redstone Pen?
4 parts
Redstone Pen has no tier ladder in this pack. The quest book gives it one quest, and the rest of the progression is the order you craft things in. Here is how that plays out.[3][4]
The quest book
The mod appears once, in the quest "Wireless Redstone Control!" quest, which sits in the "Useful Items & Tips" chapter (chapter 2 of 31 in the book). The task is to get the Redstone Remote.[3]
Left-click a device such as a lever or button with the Remote to save its frequency. After that, right-click to toggle it on and off from any distance. The chunk holding the redstone must be loaded and in the same dimension, or it won't work.[3]

The relay chain
Everything in the relay family starts from the Redstone Relay, which has its own crafting recipe. From there each step is a single-item shapeless conversion, so you only need the previous relay in the grid.[4]

Quill, Pen and Logic Control
The Redstone Quill is the cheaper writing tool, and the Redstone Pen is the more expensive one. The Pen costs a lot more redstone, and that cost is worth planning for.[4]
