What is Better P2P?

Better P2P is part of this pack at version 1.5.2 (file betterp2p-1.5.2.jar). It has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have for this pack don't describe what Better P2P does in detail, so check the mod in-game before relying on any specific behaviour.

How do you get started with Better P2P?

3 parts

The only item this mod adds in the pack is the Advanced Memory Card, so your first step is simply to make one. It's a tool for linking and re-linking P2P tunnels without breaking and replacing them. Everything below is what the card's own screen tells you.[2][3]

Step 1: Craft the card

The recipe is shapeless, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the crafting grid. This is the exact in-pack recipe:[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: betterp2p:advanced_memory_card

Step 2: Learn the four modes

The card's screen has a Select button and a Bind button. You pick a P2P to select, then bind it to a target. What happens depends on the mode, so check the Current Mode line before you bind.[3]

  • Copy Input to Output: the selected P2P must be an input. The bind target has its connections removed first, then it is added to the selected P2P's outputs and becomes the same type as that input.[3]
  • Bind to Input: the selected P2P becomes the output and the bind target becomes the input. The selected P2P takes on the type of its new input, and the bind target is added to the output list.[3]
  • Bind to Output: the selected P2P becomes the input and the bind target becomes the output. The target takes on the type of its new input and is added to the output list.[3]
  • Unbind: this disables normal binding. All bound P2Ps become unbindable, which resets their frequency and converts them back to inputs.[3]
Watch out: Binding clears old connections first. In Bind to Input and Bind to Output, the selected P2P and the bind target (if it is an output) lose their existing connections before the new link is made, and in Copy mode the bind target does too. Check which mode you are in before you bind a tunnel that is already working.[3]

Step 3: Find the right P2P in a big list

Once you have lots of tunnels, use the sorting tags. You can show only input P2Ps, only output P2Ps, only bound ones, or only unbound ones, and you can filter by type name. Tags are separated by spaces and combined with the AND operator, so each extra tag narrows the list further.[3]

Each entry shows its status (Input, Output, Bound, Unbound or Offline), plus details such as its position, dimension, side and channels used. The card also has Small, Standard, Large and Automatic GUI sizes if the screen feels cramped.[3]

How does Better P2P work?

4 parts

The part of Better P2P that the sources describe is the Advanced Memory Card, so this section is about how that card handles P2Ps. It has several binding modes, a list of P2Ps you can sort, and a screen that tells you what each P2P is currently doing.[3]

Getting the card

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: betterp2p:advanced_memory_card

This is a shapeless crafting recipe, so the ingredients can go in any slots.

The modes

The card shows its current mode on screen. In each binding mode you pick a P2P with Select, then use Bind on a target. The mode decides which of the two becomes the input and which becomes the output.[3]

  • Copy Input to Output: the selected P2P must be an input. The bind target has its connections removed first. The selected P2P stays the input, the target is added to its list of outputs, and the target becomes the same type as its new input.[3]
  • Bind to Input: the selected P2P and the bind target (if it is an output) have their connections removed first. The selected P2P becomes the output and the bind target becomes the input. The selected P2P takes the same type as its new input, and the bind target is added to the output list.[3]
  • Bind to Output: the selected P2P (if it is an output) and the bind target have their connections removed first. The selected P2P becomes the input and the bind target becomes the output. The bind target takes the same type as its new input and is added to the output list.[3]
  • Unbind: this turns off normal binding, so you can no longer bind P2Ps. Every bound P2P becomes unbindable, which resets its frequency and converts it back to an input.[3]
Watch out: Every binding mode removes existing connections on at least one of the P2Ps before it binds. Check which mode is active before you press Bind, so you don't cut a link you wanted to keep.[3]

If you try to change a P2P to a type it already has, the card tells you the P2P is already this type.[3]

Reading the P2P list

The card's screen lists P2Ps and shows details for each one: its name, dimension, position and side. It also shows the channels used. A P2P's status reads Bound, Unbound, Input, Output or Offline. The card item itself also displays the frequency it has selected.[3]

The list can be sorted with tags. You can show only input P2Ps, only output P2Ps, only bound P2Ps or only unbound P2Ps, or filter by type name. Tags are separated by spaces and combined with the AND operator, so each extra tag narrows the list further. The list can also show all types, or only the ones you filtered for.[3]

Tip: On a big network, combine tags. For example, an input tag plus a type name narrows the list to just the input P2Ps of that type.[3]

Screen size

The card's screen has size settings named Automatic, Small, Standard and Large, so you can change the size if the P2P list feels cramped.[3]

How do you progress through Better P2P?

Better P2P doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack. The recipe dump shows only one recipe that makes an item from the mod: the Advanced Memory Card. It's a shapeless crafting recipe, so ingredient placement in the grid doesn't matter.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: betterp2p:advanced_memory_card

This is the only Better P2P recipe in the pack's recipe dump.

That is all the sources here confirm for progression. The pack's quest book has no quests involving the mod, so there is no quest path to follow for it, and I won't invent a tier breakdown.[2]

How does Better P2P work with other mods?

Better P2P connects to Applied Energistics 2 through a single recipe in this pack. The Advanced Memory Card is crafted from two items that belong to Applied Energistics 2: the Memory Card and the Network Tool.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: betterp2p:advanced_memory_card

This is a shapeless recipe, so the two items can go anywhere in the crafting grid.

Because the recipe is shapeless, you don't need to worry about the layout. Put both items in the grid and you get the Advanced Memory Card.[2]

This is the only recipe the sources show linking Better P2P with another mod.[2]
