What is Better Compatibility Checker?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Better Compatibility Checker is a small utility mod that changes how the multiplayer server list decides whether a server is compatible with your game. The default Forge check is not always accurate, and it can mark a server as incompatible even when it isn't. That confuses players who just want to join.[1]
Instead, the mod compares the modpack project ID and the modpack version ID that the modpack author sets in a config file. If they match, you see a tick. If they don't, you see an X.[1]
Who it is for
This one is mainly for modpack authors and server owners. Players mostly benefit from it without doing anything: when you add a server, the server list shows a tick if you and the server are running the same version, and an X if the server or client version is incompatible.[1]
Configuration
The author opens bcc-common.toml in the config folder, sets the modpack name and the modpack version, and saves. The version has to be updated every time the modpack is updated. Otherwise the check compares stale data.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships Better Compatibility Checker 21.1.8, using the NeoForge build of the mod. It was already included by pack version 2.25 or earlier.[2]
Unverified The sources don't show any items, recipes or quests for this mod, and they don't show where it fits in the pack's progression or on the ATM Star path. It also isn't confirmed which modpack name and version values this pack sets in its config.
How do you get started with Better Compatibility Checker?
2 parts
Better Compatibility Checker is a small utility, not something you craft with. It changes the default server compatibility check so that it compares modpack versions. When you add a server, you see a tick if the client and server run the same version, or an X if they do not.[1]
The pack author does the setup in a config file by setting the modpack name and the modpack version. The mod's project page reminds authors to update the version whenever the modpack is updated.[1]
What this pack sets
The pack's config file is config/bcc-common.toml. These are the values it ships with:[3]
- general.modpackName holds the name of the modpack, and the pack has filled it in.[3]
- general.modpackVersion is set to "1.0.2". This is the version string the check compares.[3]
- general.useMetadata is set to true. The config comment says to use metadata.json to determine the modpack version, and to only enable it if you know what you are doing.[3]
- general.modpackProjectID is 0, which is also the mod default. The config comment says this option is deprecated and will be removed soon.[3]
What you will see in game
When you hover over a server entry, the tooltip shows the server's version and your client's version. If they differ, it tells you that you are not running the same version of the modpack as the server.[4]
How does Better Compatibility Checker work?
3 parts
Better Compatibility Checker has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling. It is a small utility that works in the multiplayer server list, so this section covers how that check works and how the pack configures it.[1]
What the check does
Normally the Forge server compatibility check can be inaccurate, and players end up seeing a server marked as not compatible when it should be fine. This mod replaces that check with a comparison of modpack versions. The values come from a config file that the modpack author sets, and the server list shows a tick if they match or an X if they do not.[1]
The tooltip shows the server's version and your own version. When they match, it lists the server version and the client version (you). When they differ, it tells you that you are not running the same version of the modpack as the server, then lists both versions so you can see which one is out of date.[4]
How the pack configures it
Everything is set in config/bcc-common.toml. The author sets the modpack name and the modpack version, and has to update the version whenever the modpack is updated. In this pack the version is set to 1.0.2.[1][3]
- general.modpackName is the name of the modpack, as the config describes it.[3]
- general.modpackVersion is the modpack version used for the comparison. The pack sets it to 1.0.2.[3]
- general.modpackProjectID is deprecated and will be removed soon, according to the config comment. The pack leaves it at 0, which is also the mod default.[3]
- general.useMetadata makes the mod use the metadata.json to determine the modpack version. The pack has it set to true. The config comment says to enable it only if you know what you are doing.[3]
If the server does not have the mod
The mod first checks whether the data it needs is set. If it is not, it falls back to the default Forge implementation, so a client with the mod can still join a server without it.[1]
Which Better Compatibility Checker config options matter?
1 part
Better Compatibility Checker keeps its options in one file, config/bcc-common.toml. Its job is to compare the modpack version on your client with the one on a server, and show a tick if they match or an X if they don't. The pack author sets the name and version in that file, and the check uses them.[1][3]
How this pack sets them
- general.modpackName is set to the pack's own name followed by the Minecraft version, 1.21.1. It is simply the name of the modpack.[3]
- general.modpackVersion is set to 1.0.2. This is the modpack version the mod compares between client and server.[1][3]
- general.useMetadata is set to true. The option's description says it makes the mod use the metadata.json to determine the modpack version, and warns you to only enable it if you know what you are doing.[3]
- general.modpackProjectID is set to 0, which is the same as the mod default of 0. The file marks this option as deprecated and due to be removed soon, so you can ignore it.[3]
What changed in Better Compatibility Checker between versions?
2 parts
FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Better Compatibility Checker 21.1.8 (the NeoForge build). It has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[5]
Recent versions (21.x, for 1.21.1)
- 21.1.7: fixed the modpack name and version not being logged after the metajson was loaded.[6]
- 21.1.6: more logging. The mod now logs the modpack name and version after setup and adds them to the crash report.[6]
- 21.1.3: bumped the NeoForge version.[6]
- 21.1.2: added an alias so the mod works in production, with thanks to pietro-lopes.[6]
- 21.1.1: dropped multiloader support.[6]
- 21.1.0: updated to 1.21.1.[6]
- 21.0.0: ported to 1.21, introduced a new versioning scheme and dropped Forge support.[6]
The changelog we have has no separate entry for 21.1.8 itself. The newest entry listed is 21.1.7, so what changed in 21.1.8 is unverified.[6]
Earlier history
- 5.0.0: ported to 1.20.4. Versions 5.1.0 and 5.1.2 updated the Forge, Fabric and Neo versions, and 5.1.0 reworked the Neo build to use the same method as Fabric.[6]
- 4.0.5: ported for NeoForge. Version 4.0.6 fixed NeoForge crashing on the multiplayer screen.[6]
- 4.0.0: moved over to MultiLoader, so the Fabric and Forge versions are released at the same time.[6]
- 3.0.0: ported to 1.20.[6]
