What is Mob Tag Fixes?

3 parts

Mob Tag Fixes is a small utility mod that makes vanilla combat mechanics work on modded mobs. Vanilla decides a lot of combat behavior with entity type tags, and a modded mob only gets those tags if its own mod added them. Many mods don't, so this one fills in the gaps.[1]

What it fixes

Without it, a modded skeleton takes no extra damage from Smite and is healed by a Potion of Healing. A modded illager is skipped by raids, and Bane of Arthropods does nothing to a modded spider. The mod adds those mobs to the tags they were left out of, so all of that behaves the way you'd expect.[1]

  • Undead: summoned skeletons, zombies and draugr from Iron's Spells, Cataclysm Spellbooks, Traveloptics and GameTechBC, plus the undead from Born in Chaos, Alex's Mobs, Alex's Caves and Mutant Monsters.[1]
  • Raiders and illagers: the Iron's Spells Archevoker and the It Takes a Pillage bandit faction.[1]
  • Arthropods: modded insects and crustaceans from Alex's Mobs, Ars Nouveau, Cataclysm and Iron's Spells.[1]

Who it's for

You don't need to do anything with this mod. It's for anyone fighting modded mobs with vanilla enchantments, potions and raid mechanics, and it works in the background. It's pure data and tags, and nothing is patched or mixin'd. Every entry is soft, so if a supported mod isn't in the pack, that entry is skipped instead of causing an error. The vanilla tags are extended, not overwritten.[1]

The pack includes version 1.0.0, which targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The mod is server side only.[1][2]

Configuration

If you want to change what it does, the file config/mob_tag_fixes-common.toml has a switch for each supported mod's additions. The clear-cut entries are separate from the borderline ones like spirits, pumpkin knights and headless types, so you can keep some and turn off others. Set a group to false and those mobs stay out of the tags. A datapack can also remove individual entries, since the additions are plain tag files.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't appear to be a progression step. They also don't show whether the pack changes any of its default config values.

How do you get started with Mob Tag Fixes?

2 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft here. Mob Tag Fixes adds no items you need to make, so there's no first recipe to build. It works in the background from the moment you load in.[1]

It's a small data-and-tags mod. It adds modded mobs to the vanilla entity type tags they should have been in, so vanilla combat mechanics treat them properly. Nothing is patched or mixin'd.[1]

What you'll notice in play

  • Undead: Smite and the healing and harming effects use the undead tag. Without the fix, a modded skeleton takes no extra damage from Smite and gets healed by a Potion of Healing.[1]
  • Raiders: raids and Bad Omen use the raiders tag, so a modded illager that was left out of it gets skipped by raids. The mod covers the Iron's Spells Archevoker and the It Takes a Pillage bandit faction.[1]
  • Arthropods: Bane of Arthropods uses the arthropod tag. The mod covers modded insects and crustaceans from Alex's Mobs, Ars Nouveau, Cataclysm, and Iron's Spells, so the enchantment works on them.[1]

For undead, the mod covers summoned skeletons, zombies, and draugr from Iron's Spells, Cataclysm Spellbooks, Traveloptics, and GameTechBC. It also covers the undead from Born in Chaos, Alex's Mobs, Alex's Caves, and Mutant Monsters.[1]

Every entry is soft. If a mod isn't in the pack, its entries are skipped instead of causing an error, and the vanilla tags are extended rather than overwritten.[1]

Your only real first step: the config

If you want to change anything, the settings live in config/mob_tag_fixes-common.toml. Each mod's additions can be switched off separately. The clear-cut entries and the borderline ones, like spirits, pumpkin knights, and headless types, have separate switches. Set a group to false and those mobs stay out of the tags.[1]

A datapack can also remove individual entries, because the additions are plain tag files.[1]

Tip: The mod is server side only and safe to add or remove on an existing world. It also works alongside Extra Damage Enchantments if you use that for its extra damage categories.[1]

Unverified This pack's exact config values, and which of the supported mods are installed, couldn't be confirmed from the available sources. Check the config file in your own instance before changing anything.

How does Mob Tag Fixes work?

4 parts

This mod has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling, so there is nothing to automate or set up. It is a small data-only mod that works quietly in the background, and the only thing you can adjust is a config file. Here is how it works.[1]

What the mod does

Vanilla decides a lot of combat behavior using entity type tags. Smite and the healing and harming effects use the undead tag, raids and Bad Omen use the raiders tag, and Bane of Arthropods uses the arthropod tag. A modded mob only counts if its own mod put it in those tags, and many mods don't. Without a fix, a modded skeleton takes no extra damage from Smite and is healed by a Potion of Healing. A modded illager is skipped by raids, and Bane of Arthropods does nothing to a modded spider.[1]

Mob Tag Fixes adds those mobs to the vanilla tags they were left out of. It extends the vanilla tags and does not overwrite them. Nothing is patched or mixin'd. Every entry is soft, so if a supported mod isn't installed its entries are skipped with no error.[1]

What gets covered

  • Undead: summoned skeletons, zombies and draugr from Iron's Spells, Cataclysm Spellbooks, Traveloptics and GameTechBC, plus the undead from Born in Chaos, Alex's Mobs, Alex's Caves and Mutant Monsters.[1]
  • Raiders and illagers: the Iron's Spells Archevoker and the It Takes a Pillage bandit faction.[1]
  • Arthropods: the modded insects and crustaceans from Alex's Mobs, Ars Nouveau, Cataclysm and Iron's Spells.[1]

The config switches

Everything is controlled from config/mob_tag_fixes-common.toml. Each supported mod has a switch for its clear-cut mobs, and the more debatable ones, such as spirits, pumpkin knights and headless types, get their own separate switch. Set a group to false and those mobs stay out of the vanilla tags. In this pack every switch is set to true.[1][3]

The main switches each cover a whole mod: alexsmobs_normal for Alex's Mobs, ars_nouveau_normal for Ars Nouveau, born_in_chaos_v1_normal for Born in Chaos, cataclysm_normal for Cataclysm, cataclysm_spellbooks_normal for Cataclysm Spellbooks, gametechbcs_spellbooks_normal for GameTechBC Spellbooks, irons_spellbooks_normal for Iron's Spells, and traveloptics_normal for Traveloptics.[3]

The borderline switches are the ones you might want to turn off if you'd rather those mobs keep their vanilla behavior. Here is what each one covers:[3]

Tip: If you want to remove just one mob rather than a whole group, a datapack can do it. The additions are plain tag files, so individual entries can be removed.[1]

Good to know

The mod is server side only and has no hard dependency on any supported mod. It's safe to add to or remove from an existing world. It also works alongside Extra Damage Enchantments if you use that for its extra damage categories.[1]

Which Mob Tag Fixes config options matter?

3 parts

Everything you can tune lives in config/mob_tag_fixes-common.toml. Each option is an on/off switch for one group of modded mobs. When a switch is true, those mobs get added to the vanilla entity tags, so things like Smite, raids and Bane of Arthropods treat them properly. Set a switch to false and those mobs stay out of the tags.[1][3]

The options come in two flavors. The "normal" switches cover a whole mod's clear-cut additions. The "borderline" switches cover the debatable mobs, like spirits, pumpkin knights and headless types, so you can keep one set and drop the other.[1][3]

Tip: In this pack every option in the file is set to true, so the groups below are active. If a mod isn't installed, its entries are skipped instead of causing an error.[1][3]

Normal groups

Borderline groups

These are the judgment calls. In this pack the options below are set to true, so these mobs are tagged too.[3]

Turning things off

If a group's mobs don't behave the way you want, say you don't want a certain spirit type to count as undead, set just that switch to false. Because the additions are plain tag files, a datapack can also remove single entries if a whole group is too blunt.[1][3]

What changed in Mob Tag Fixes between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Mob Tag Fixes 1.0.0, and that is the only version of the mod covered here. The pack's file list shows it was already included in FTB Skies 2 1.19.0 or earlier, so you have had it for a while.[2]

1.0.0

This was the mod's first release, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. The idea is simple: modded mobs often miss the vanilla entity type tags they belong in. Mob Tag Fixes adds them to the tags their own mods left them out of, so Smite, the healing and harming flip on undead, raids, Bad Omen and Bane of Arthropods work on modded mobs and summons.[4]

Here is what the release covers:[4]

  • Undead tags for summoned skeletons, zombies and draugr from Iron's Spells, Cataclysm Spellbooks, Traveloptics and GameTechBC.[4]
  • Raider and illager tags for the Iron's Spells Archevoker and the It Takes a Pillage bandits.[4]
  • Arthropod tags for modded insects and crustaceans from Alex's Mobs, Ars Nouveau, Cataclysm and Iron's Spells.[4]
  • Undead and arthropod entries for Born in Chaos, Alex's Caves and Mutant Monsters.[4]

I don't have any pack changelog entries that mention this mod, so there is nothing further to report on how it has changed between pack releases.[2]
