What is FTB Quests?

FTB Quests is the quest mod this pack uses. The pack includes version 2101.1.21, and it has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the experience.[1]

The only quest data I can confirm for this guide is a chapter called the_wild_hunt. Every quest in it is untitled in the pack files, and each one has a single item task: Missing Item. Examples are a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[2]

Tip: Because those quests have no titles and only use the Missing Item task, you can't learn much about them from the data alone. Check the quest book in-game to see what they show you.[2]

Unverified I couldn't confirm what this mod's features do, who it is aimed at, or where it fits in the pack's progression. I also couldn't confirm any link to an ATM Star path, so treat the quest book as the main place to look for guidance.

How do you get started with FTB Quests?

4 parts

The FTB Quests items you can craft in this pack all have their own recipes. Here is the order I'd make them in, starting with the Quest Book and then moving on to the Task Screens.[3]

Step one: the Quest Book

Start with the Quest Book. Its recipe is shapeless, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the crafting grid.[3]

A shapeless crafting recipe, so placement in the grid does not matter.

Step two: a Task Screen

Next, make a Task Screen (1x1). It is the smallest screen, and the larger screens and the configurator all have recipes that use it, so it is worth making early.[3]

The Task Screen (1x1) is the base for the other screen recipes.

Once you have the 1x1 screen, you can step up in size. Each bigger screen has its own recipe that builds on the smaller ones.[3]

Task Screen (5x5), which builds on the smaller screens.

Task Screen (7x7), the largest size, built on the smaller screens.

Step three: the extras

The Task Screen Configurator also uses a 1x1 screen in its recipe, so it is easy to add once you have one.[3]

The last item is the Loot Crate Opener, which has a shaped crafting recipe of its own.[3]

A note on the quest data

The quests listed in the wild hunt chapter in the pack's quest data are untitled, and every task in them is Missing Item, for example a quest in "?". This means that chapter does not show you a starting path.[2]

How does FTB Quests work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.2 guide

Your starting point is the Quest Book, which opens the quest screen. This pack uses the mod's own shapeless recipe for it, so the pack hasn't changed it.[4]

How quests unlock

Quests are linked by dependencies, and the quest file uses one of two progression modes. In Linear mode, a quest must be complete before any quest that depends on it can be started. In Flexible mode, you can make progress on tasks in a dependent quest at any time, but you can't complete that quest until its dependency is done.[5]

Unverified There are no config files for this mod in the pack's sources, so which progression mode this pack's quest file uses is unverified.

Not every dependency chain is a straight line. A quest can be set up as an OR quest, where it unlocks once a certain number of its dependencies are done instead of all of them. A quest can also cap how many of the quests it unlocks can be completed. That creates exclusive branches: once you finish one path, the other branches become unavailable.[5]

Individual quests can bend these rules. Some let you start their tasks before the dependencies are complete. Others require their tasks to be done in the exact order they were added, so check the quest carefully if a task isn't ticking off.[5]

Some quests hide things from you on purpose. A quest can stay completely invisible until you complete it, which is great for easter egg quests. It can also become visible after you finish a set number of its tasks. Other quests can hide their text and tasks until you're able to start them, or show their description text only after you've finished them.[5]

How item tasks detect your items

Item tasks watch your inventory. When your inventory changes, the mod checks it again, with a minimum delay in ticks between checks. Higher delays are kinder on server TPS, but you'll wait longer before the auto-completion message pops up, so a short pause after picking something up is normal.[5]

Each item task has a component matching mode. None ignores item component data entirely. Fuzzy only checks the data components present on the task's filter item. Strict requires the filter item's components to match your item exactly. If you're holding the right item and the task won't complete, a Strict match is a likely reason.[5]

The mod also has a quest chest block with two sides: you place items in its input to complete quests, and rewards appear in its output.[5]

Task Screens and automation

Task Screens are how you hook quests up to your automation. Items can be piped into a Task Screen to submit them to a task. A quest can even set an item task so that it only accepts items piped into a Task Screen, which only applies when that task consumes the items. That makes Task Screens the way to handle big bulk deliveries without hand-feeding them.[5]

The screens come in four sizes: Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). The small screen is the base: each bigger screen is crafted from the smaller ones. This pack uses the mod's own recipes for all of them.[4]

Unverified The sources don't explain how to use the Task Screen Configurator, how to link a Task Screen to a specific task, or which quests in this pack require Task Screen submission.

Rewards

Rewards can work for a single player or for a team. When a reward is marked as a team reward, the whole team gets one copy and only the player who submits receives it. Otherwise, every online team member gets the reward.[5]

  • Some item rewards are set to give nothing if you already have that item in your inventory, and this check ignores NBT.[5]
  • Some rewards are skipped when you press the Claim All button, so you have to claim them by hand. Loot, Random and Choice rewards can't use this setting.[5]
  • Repeatable quests can have a cooldown, measured in seconds, between claiming all their rewards and being able to do the tasks again.[5]
  • Rewards can also come as loot crates, which are set up through reward tables.[5]

There's also a Loot Crate Opener, which uses the mod's own recipe in this pack.[4]

Unverified The sources don't describe exactly how the Loot Crate Opener works or what the loot crates in this pack contain.

Tip: In the quest screen, the scroll wheel scrolls up and down by default. Hold Shift to pan and Ctrl to zoom. There's also an option to make Backspace reopen the quest you viewed before.[5]
Watch out: If you set completion notifications to Action Bar or None, you may miss notices when tasks, quests or chapters complete.[5]

How do you progress through FTB Quests?

3 parts

Progression for FTB Quests in this pack is a short story as far as I can confirm. The one quest chapter I have data for is "the_wild_hunt", and the only tier-style ladder I can show is the Task Screen block, which comes in several sizes.[2][3]

The Wild Hunt chapter

In the pack data, every quest in the chapter "the_wild_hunt" is untitled, and each one has a single task: Missing Item. Because of that, there are no quest names, descriptions or tier labels to walk you through here.[2]

Task Screen tiers

The tier ladder I can confirm comes from the in-pack recipes. Task Screens come in these sizes: Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). Each size has its own recipe, shown below.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use FTB Quests?

1 part

In this pack, the only chapter that the quest data ties to FTB Quests is called the_wild_hunt. Every quest in it is untitled, and each one has a single item task: Missing Item.[2]

That Missing Item is a placeholder. The data doesn't tell us what you're really meant to hand in, so I can't say what these quests ask for. I'd rather not guess.[2]

Quests in the_wild_hunt

These are the quests in the chapter, in the order the pack data lists them. That listing is not necessarily the order you complete them in.[2]

Unverified The data I have doesn't show quest titles, dependencies, rewards or the intended order in the_wild_hunt. It also doesn't show whether any other chapter in this pack uses FTB Quests content. Check the in-game quest book for the real progression.
