Cooking for Blockheads is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 21.1.24. Adds a multiblock kitchen that shows recipes you can make with what ingredients you have available. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Cooking for Blockheads?

1 part

Cooking for Blockheads is the kitchen mod in the pack. The pack ships version 21.1.24 for NeoForge 1.21.1, and its blocks are all about setting up a proper kitchen: a Cooking Table, an Oven, a Fridge, a Sink and more.[1][2]

The pack gives the mod its own quest chapter, "cooking_and_brewing". If you like following the questbook, that chapter is the best guide to the order the pack expects you to build things in. The quests have no titles, so each one is just named after the item it asks for.[2]

Where it fits in the questbook

Everything starts with the Cooking Table quest, "Building Your Kitchen" quest, which asks you to obtain the Cooking Table. Almost every other kitchen quest unlocks after it.[2]

So the pack's path is simple: get the table first, then branch out to the other kitchen pieces. The Fridge leads to the cooling and preservation upgrades, and the Oven leads to the heating upgrade.[2]

Unverified The sources do not show Cooking for Blockheads on the ATM Star quest path, and they do not describe how its blocks behave or how they are crafted in this pack. Check the in-game recipe viewer for exact recipes. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Cooking for Blockheads?

4 parts

The quest chapter "cooking_and_brewing" in this pack gives you a ready-made order for Cooking for Blockheads. One quest sits at the root, and every other quest in the chapter unlocks after it, directly or through the fridge and oven branches. Here is how I'd work through it.[2]

Step 1: the recipe book and the Cooking Table

Your first goal is the Cooking Table ("Building Your Kitchen" quest). Its in-game description says it enables crafting abilities, and every other quest in the chapter comes after it.[2][3]

In this pack the Cooking Table recipe uses Cooking for Blockheads II (Cooking for Blockheads II), so you need the book first. It describes itself as letting you craft food with what you have available. It is made from Cooking for Blockheads I (Cooking for Blockheads I), which only shows you the food you can make right now.[3][4]

Step 2: water, storage and heat

Once the table is down, the next quests unlock. Start with the Sink, which provides water to recipes ("Infinite Water Source?" quest).[2][3]

Tip: The quests ask for the plain white Fridge and Oven. The pack also has recipes that turn an existing fridge or oven into the white version, and into other colours, using a dye.[2][4]

Step 3: racks and extras

These quests also unlock straight after the Cooking Table, so you can pick them up in any order:[2]

Step 4: upgrades

Two quests unlock after the fridge: the Preservation Chamber ("Preservation Unit" quest) and the Ice Unit ("Ice Unit" quest). The chamber prevents the last item of a slot from being used up, and the ice unit provides snow and ice to recipes. After the oven you unlock the Heating Unit ("Heating Unit" quest), which lets you heat an oven using energy.[2][3]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is built from a set of kitchen blocks, and this pack's sources only describe part of how they behave. Here is what can be confirmed: how the kitchen pieces are made, how the dye system works, and the one change the pack makes to the mod's book.[3][4]

The book chain and the Cooking Table

Everything starts with Cooking for Blockheads I, which the pack makes by smelting rather than in a crafting grid.[4]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

The next step up is Cooking for Blockheads II, a shaped crafting recipe that builds on the first book.[4]

The no filter edition is disabled in this pack

Watch out: The pack cancels the right-click on Cooking for Blockheads. You get a red message, a fire-extinguish sound, and a 40 tick cooldown on the item, and the book does not do anything. Don't plan around using it.[5]

Storage and connecting blocks

The kitchen storage pieces each have their own screen in the mod: the Kitchen Cabinet, Kitchen Counter, Fridge, Fruit Basket, Spice Rack and Cutting Board. The mod also adds Oven, Sink, Toaster and jar blocks, and the Jade tooltips cover the fridge, oven, sink, toaster, milk jar and a preservation chamber.[3]

Dyeing and undyeing

Colour variants are handled in the crafting grid. The pack has 112 shapeless recipes that produce this mod's items, and each makes a different result. The black ones show the pattern: a black dye plus any block from the matching mod tag gives the black version of cabinets, connectors and cooking tables.[4]

Ingredient tag tweak

The pack adds Farmer's Delight wheat dough to the mod's ingredients tag, so it counts as one of the mod's ingredients. It also adds the dough to the common wheat dough tag.[6]

Unverified The sources do not explain how the Cooking Table, connectors and kitchen storage link up, how the oven and sink work, or whether any of this can be automated with pipes or hoppers. There is no guidebook or config file for this mod in the pack, so check in-game before building around it.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

4 parts

In this pack, Cooking for Blockheads progression follows the quest chapter called cooking_and_brewing. It starts at one root quest, then branches out into the rest of the kitchen. Each quest simply asks you to obtain one item.[2]

Step 1: The Cooking Table

The root of the chapter is "Building Your Kitchen" quest, which asks you to get a Cooking Table. Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after it, so this is your starting point.[2]

The Cooking Table recipe builds on the upgraded book, Cooking for Blockheads II. That book is made from the first book, Cooking for Blockheads I, so the book upgrade is your first real step.[4]

Step 2: The first branches

Once the Cooking Table quest is done, a whole set of quests opens up at the same time. Each one asks for a single item:[2]

Here are the in-pack recipes for those items. They are all listed in the pack's recipe dump, except the Cow in a Jar, which isn't covered by the sources here.[4]

Step 3: Upgrades for the Oven and Fridge

The last quests in the chapter sit one step deeper. "Heating Unit" quest asks for a Heating Unit and unlocks after the Oven quest. "Preservation Unit" quest asks for a Preservation Chamber, and "Ice Unit" quest asks for an Ice Unit. Both of those unlock after the Fridge quest.[2]

Beyond the quests

Some craftable blocks have no quest in this chapter, such as the Kitchen Counter, Kitchen Cabinet, Kitchen Connector and Cutting Board. They all have in-pack recipes, so they are worth making once your kitchen is running.[2][4]

Many of the kitchen blocks can also be dyed with shapeless dye recipes, and the Kitchen Floor has dyed versions too. If you dye a Cooking Table or a Sink and change your mind, there are recipes that turn it back into the plain version.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Cooking for Blockheads?

3 parts

Everything from Cooking for Blockheads lives in one quest chapter, "cooking_and_brewing". Every quest in it has a single item task, so each one just asks you to have the matching block or item. The quests are untitled in the pack files, so I refer to them by their IDs below.[2]

Where it starts

The entry point is quest "Building Your Kitchen" quest, which asks for the Cooking Table. Every other quest in the chapter depends on it, directly or through another quest, so start here.[2]

Branches after the Cooking Table

Once the Cooking Table quest is done, seven quests open up. You can do them in any order:[2]

Second-tier quests

Three more quests unlock from two of those branches. The Fridge quest leads to two of them, and the Oven quest leads to the third.[2]

Tip: If you want to follow the chain in order, go Cooking Table, then Fridge, then Preservation Chamber and Ice Unit. Do the Oven before the Heating Unit. The other branches don't block anything, so grab them whenever you have the materials.[2]
