What is Auroral?
2 parts
Auroral is a winter expansion mod that turns cold biomes into a place with their own progression. You harness the Aurora Borealis to make unique tools, armor and potions, and you never have to visit the Nether to do it. This pack ships Auroral 1.21.1-1.0.7.[1][2]
The Aurora event
On certain nights in cold biomes, ribbons of green and pink light fill the sky, and that event drives the whole mod. During an aurora, Glacial Basins fill with Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel gear slowly repairs itself, and Aurora Blooms sprout on snow blocks. The blooms vanish for good when morning comes.[1]
What you can do with it
- Glacial Basin: the heart of the crafting system. Place it under open sky in a cold biome, then right-click it with materials to turn Unrefined Shimmersteel into Shimmersteel Ingots, Woven Leather into Shimmerweave Fabric, and Frozen Petals into Aurora Shards.[1]
- Shimmersteel tools: you upgrade iron tools at a Smithing Table with Shimmersteel Ingots. The shovel has inherent Silk Touch, and the bow fires Star-Shots using snowballs as ammo.[1]
- Shimmerweave armor: you upgrade iron armor with Shimmerweave Fabric. The tunic automatically extinguishes fire, and the skates give you ice skating and Frost Walker.[1]
- Nether-free brewing: the Cold Brewing Stand uses snowballs instead of Blaze Powder, and Frozen Petals work like Nether Wart for Awkward Potions.[1]
- Extras: Glow Leeks grown on Shimmering Ice give Night Vision when eaten, and a Hearthwood Log burns for 7 days. You can also use an Aurora Shard on a Snow Golem to make a tiny Snowlette pet.[1]
Unverified The sources here do not show where this pack's quest book places Auroral, what comes before or after it, or whether the ATM Star path uses it. They also do not include an in-jar guidebook for the mod, so the details above come from the mod's own description.
How do you get started with Auroral?
5 parts
Auroral is all about aurora nights in cold biomes. Your first goal is to set up a base somewhere snowy and place the one block that turns those nights into progression. Here's the order I'd follow.[1]
Craft a Glacial Basin
The Glacial Basin is the heart of the mod. Place it under open sky in a cold biome, and during an aurora it collects Liquid Aura. The pack changes this recipe, so go by the one below rather than anything you've seen on the mod's project page.[1][3]
To use the basin, right-click it with items while an aurora is active. Infusion needs Liquid Aura, which is only collected during an aurora.[4]
Collect Frozen Petals and make Aurora Shards
During an aurora, Aurora Blooms sprout on snow blocks and are harvested for Frozen Petals. Right-click the basin with Frozen Petals and you get an Aurora Shard.[1]
Make Shimmersteel
Next, craft Unrefined Shimmersteel. The pack changes this recipe too, so use the one below.[3]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper ingot
- any iron ingot
Coal
Recipe id: auroral:unrefined_shimmersteel
Then right-click the basin with it during an aurora to refine it into a Shimmersteel Ingot.[1][4]
Craft the upgrade template
Every Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave upgrade needs the Smithing Template, so craft it before you start smithing.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: auroral:shimmersteel_upgrade_smithing_template
Upgrade your iron gear
At a Smithing Table, put iron armor, a weapon or a tool in the base slot, then add either a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric. Tools and weapons use ingots. Here is the pickaxe as an example, and the other tools and the sword and bow follow the same pattern.[3][4]
Armor uses Shimmerweave Fabric instead. You make it by infusing Woven Leather in the basin during an aurora.[1][4]
The goggles, leggings and skates use the same pattern with a different iron armor piece.
How does Auroral work?
9 parts
Auroral is built around one timed event, the aurora, and one key block, the Glacial Basin. The sources I have don't describe power, multiblocks, fluid pipes or item automation for this mod, so this section covers what they do document: the aurora, the basin, smithing upgrades, brewing and the gear stats as the pack sets them.[1]
The aurora event
On some nights in cold biomes the sky fills with green and pink ribbons. That is the trigger for almost everything in the mod. While an aurora is active, Glacial Basins fill with Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel gear slowly repairs itself, and Aurora Blooms sprout on snow. The blooms vanish for good when morning comes.[1]
- aurora.aurora_chance is 0.33, the chance of an aurora each night in cold biomes. That is the mod default.[5]
- aurora.aurora_min_duration is 6,000 ticks, the shortest an aurora can last (20 ticks = 1 second). Also the mod default.[5]
- aurora.aurora_max_duration is 12,000 ticks, the longest an aurora can last. Also the mod default.[5]
- aurora.aurora_repair_rate is 1, meaning 1 durability repaired per second on Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear during an aurora. Also the mod default.[5]
The Glacial Basin
The Glacial Basin is the heart of the mod. Place it under open sky in a cold biome and it collects Liquid Aura during auroras. Then you right-click it with materials to transform them. The pack changed the basin's crafting recipe, so use the one shown here.[1][3][4]

Recipe id: auroral:glacial_basin
This recipe is changed by the pack.
basin.basin_max_aura is 3, the maximum aura levels a basin can hold. That matches the mod default.[5]
basin.basin_fill_rate is 100, the ticks between each aura fill during an aurora (lower is faster). That also matches the mod default.[5]
The basin turns these inputs into outputs:[1]
- Unrefined Shimmersteel becomes Shimmersteel Ingot.[1]
- Woven Leather becomes Shimmerweave Fabric.[1]
- Frozen Petals become an Aurora Shard.[1]
- Ice becomes Shimmering Ice.[1]
Preparing the basin inputs
Frozen Petals are harvested from Aurora Blooms, which only appear during auroras. Unrefined Shimmersteel is a normal crafting recipe, and the pack changed it. Woven Leather is also crafted by hand.[1][3]

Smithing upgrades
Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor are made at a Smithing Table. You upgrade iron gear with a Smithing Template plus either a Shimmersteel Ingot for tools and weapons or Shimmerweave Fabric for armor. The template's tooltips say the same: add iron armor, weapon or tool as the base, and a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric as the addition.[1][3][4]

The other Shimmersteel tools follow the same pattern, each with its matching iron tool.
The other Shimmerweave pieces follow the same pattern with the matching iron armor.
Gear numbers in this pack
The Shimmersteel Sword applies Slowness and executes low-health enemies. The values below are the pack's settings, and both match the mod defaults.[1][5]
- combat.sword_slowness_duration is 3, the seconds of Slowness the sword applies.[5]
- combat.execute_threshold is 0.15, the health threshold for the sword's execute.[5]
- Shimmerweave Goggles make nearby hostile mobs glow within the radius set by equipment.goggles_glowing_radius, which is 32 blocks.[1][5]
- Shimmerweave Leggings get a snow speed multiplier from equipment.leggings_snow_speed_boost, set to 0.2 (+20% speed).[1][5]
- Shimmerweave Leggings also get Soul Speed on soul sand and soil: equipment.leggings_soul_speed_boost is 0.3 (+30% speed).[1][5]
- Shimmerweave Skates have a frost walker and lava walker radius of 2 blocks (equipment.skates_frost_walker_radius).[1][5]
- The skates' speed multiplier on regular ice is 1.05 (equipment.skates_ice_speed_boost).[5]
- The skates' speed multiplier on packed or blue ice is 2.1 (equipment.skates_packed_ice_speed_boost).[5]
The Shimmersteel Bow fires Star-Shots using snowballs as ammo. The pack sets items.snowball_max_stack_size to 64, while vanilla stacks snowballs to 16. Because it is a startup setting, changing it needs a game restart.[1][6]
Nether-free brewing
The Cold Brewing Stand uses snowballs where a normal stand uses Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals take the place of Nether Wart for making Awkward Potions.[1]

Hearthwood Log
The Hearthwood Log gives frostbite immunity nearby and acts as an Aurora Catalyst. These are the pack's settings, and all of them match the mod defaults:[1][5]
- hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_burn_time is 168,000 ticks, which is 7 in-game days.[5]
- hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_frostbite_radius is 16, the radius of the frostbite protection.[5]
- hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_villager_discount is 0.2, the trade discount for villagers near the log.[5]

Auroral Nautilus
You can ride an Auroral Nautilus, and wild ones are tied to auroras. The pack's settings are:[4][5]
- nautilus.nautilus_despawn_delay is 600 ticks (30 seconds) before wild nautili despawn after the aurora ends.[5]
- nautilus.nautilus_boost_duration is 10 ticks (0.5 seconds), the length of the charge boost.[5]
- nautilus.nautilus_boost_strength is 3, the maximum boost multiplier at full charge (3x velocity).[5]
Client-side visuals
The client config controls how the aurora looks on your screen: aurora_visuals.show_aurora_effect, aurora_visuals.show_aurora_particles and aurora_visuals.play_aurora_ambient_sound are all true. aurora_visuals.aurora_intensity is 1 on a 0.0 to 2.0 scale, and footprints.show_footprints is true for snow footprints. These only affect visuals and sound.[7]
How do you progress through Auroral?
5 parts
This pack has no quest path for this mod, so there are no official tiers to follow. What the pack does give you is its recipe list, so the order below is a sensible way to work through the items based on what each recipe needs.[3]
Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter for Auroral, so any quest-book guidance on how to progress with this mod is unverified. The recipes below are what the pack's recipe dump confirms.
Base materials
Unrefined Shimmersteel is a shapeless crafting recipe, and the pack changed it, so don't assume the mod's default applies. Use the recipe below.[3]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper ingot
- any iron ingot
Coal

This recipe was changed by the pack.
Woven Leather is a simple shapeless crafting recipe, and it uses the mod's own recipe.[3]
The key unlock for gear is the Smithing Template. Every Shimmersteel tool and Shimmerweave armor piece uses one in its smithing recipe.[3]

Shimmersteel tools and bow
The Shimmersteel Sword, Shimmersteel Pickaxe, Shimmersteel Axe, Shimmersteel Shovel, Shimmersteel Hoe and Shimmersteel Bow are all smithing table upgrades. Each one upgrades the matching vanilla item (iron for the tools, the plain bow for the bow) using a Shimmersteel Ingot and the smithing template. Here is the pickaxe as an example, and the others follow the same pattern.[3]
Shimmerweave armor
The armor set is also made at a smithing table. It uses Shimmerweave Fabric and the same template, and it upgrades the matching vanilla iron armor piece. You get Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings and Shimmerweave Skates.[3]
The goggles, leggings and skates use the same pattern with their own iron armor piece.
Utility and cold-themed items
The pack changed the recipes for the Aurora Lantern and the Glacial Basin. Use these versions, not the mod's defaults.[3]

Food
The food items need no Shimmersteel. Hot Cocoa and Frosted Cookies are plain shapeless crafting recipes. For farming, Glow Leek Seeds are crafted, and you can turn the resulting Glow-Leek into Candied Glow-Leek.[3]
Which Auroral config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Good news: in this pack, every Auroral option you can see in the config files is set to the mod's own default. The pack changed nothing, so anything you know about the mod's default tuning applies here. Below are the options you're most likely to want to tweak, with the exact values this pack uses.[8][9][10]
Aurora events
- aurora.aurora_chance is 0.33, the chance of an aurora each night in cold biomes. The allowed range is 0.0 to 1.0.[9]
- aurora.aurora_min_duration is 6000 ticks and aurora.aurora_max_duration is 12000 ticks. 20 ticks make 1 second.[9]
- aurora.aurora_repair_rate is 1, the durability repaired per second on Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear during an aurora.[9]
- basin.basin_fill_rate is 100 ticks between each aura fill during an aurora, and lower means faster. basin.basin_max_aura is 3, the maximum aura levels a basin can hold.[9]
Since basins only fill during auroras, the chance and duration options decide how quickly you get Liquid Aura for your crafting.[1][9]
Gear and combat
- combat.execute_threshold is 0.15 for the Shimmersteel Sword's execute, and combat.sword_slowness_duration is 3 seconds of Slowness.[9]
- equipment.goggles_glowing_radius is 32 blocks, the radius in which Shimmerweave Goggles apply Glowing to hostile mobs.[9]
- equipment.leggings_snow_speed_boost is 0.2 (+20% on snow) and equipment.leggings_soul_speed_boost is 0.3 (+30% on soul sand and soil).[9]
- equipment.skates_ice_speed_boost is 1.05 on regular ice and equipment.skates_packed_ice_speed_boost is 2.1 on packed or blue ice.[9]
- equipment.skates_frost_walker_radius is 2 blocks for the Shimmerweave Skates' frost walker and lava walker effect.[9]
Hearthwood Log and nautilus
- hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_burn_time is 168000 ticks, which is 7 in-game days.[9]
- hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_frostbite_radius is 16 blocks for frostbite protection, and hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_villager_discount is 0.2 for the trade discount on nearby villagers.[9]
- nautilus.nautilus_boost_duration is 10 ticks (0.5 seconds) and nautilus.nautilus_boost_strength is 3, meaning up to 3x velocity at full charge.[9]
- nautilus.nautilus_despawn_delay is 600 ticks, so wild nautili despawn 30 seconds after the aurora ends.[9]
Client visuals
The client options are all on or at their default. aurora_visuals.show_aurora_effect, aurora_visuals.show_aurora_particles, aurora_visuals.play_aurora_ambient_sound and footprints.show_footprints are all true. aurora_visuals.aurora_intensity is 1, with a range of 0.0 to 2.0.[8]
Snowball stack size
items.snowball_max_stack_size is 64 in this pack, which is the mod's default. The file notes that vanilla stacks snowballs to 16, so you carry far more of them. That matters for the Shimmersteel Bow, which uses snowballs as ammo. The allowed range is 16 to 64.[1][10]
What changed in Auroral between versions?
2 parts
FTB Skies 2 1.15.0 ships Auroral 1.21.1-1.0.7. The mod was already in the pack by 1.13.0 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]
Auroral 1.0.7 (the version in this pack)
This release backported fixes from the mod's 26.1 / 1.5.2 branch that also affect 1.21.1. Several of them change how things behave in your world.[11]
- Aurora Lanterns now drop themselves when broken instead of disappearing.[11]
- Glow Leeks now drop a leek plus bonus seeds when harvested at full maturity, like wheat. Right-click harvesting with the Reap mod works correctly too.[11]
- Hearthwood Logs can be relit with flint and steel after they burn out.[11]
- Shimmering Ice now hydrates vanilla farmland within 4 blocks, not just Shimmer Soil. This also works for Shimmering Ice you placed before the update.[11]
- The client config toggles show_aurora_particles and play_aurora_ambient_sound now actually work. Before this, both were defined but never read, so toggling them did nothing.[11]
Auroral 1.0.4
This earlier release added missing recipes and fixed a lot of broken ones. It added recipes for the Shimmersteel Upgrade Smithing Template, for ice, and for the Auroral Guide. It also fixed all crafting recipes not working because of an incorrect JSON format.[12]
It also changed the Auroral Nautilus. The Nautilus now drops 1-2 leather instead of Aurora Shards, has a small chance to drop Prismarine Shards, and spawns less often.[12]
The release also fixed the spawn egg textures for the Auroral Snowlette and Auroral Nautilus, the advancement tab background, and duplicate resource files that were causing build issues.[12]
Unverified I have no pack changelog entries for Auroral, so whether FTB Skies 2 changed any Auroral recipes or values in its own releases is unverified.
