What is Auroral?

2 parts

Auroral is a winter expansion that turns cold biomes into places worth building in. The pack includes version 1.21.1-1.1.1. Auroras can appear on nights in cold biomes, and while one is active you can collect Liquid Aura in a Glacial Basin, which you use to craft Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor.[1][2][3]

What it adds

  • Aurora events: each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance to start one. They fill basins with Liquid Aura, repair Shimmersteel gear and make Aurora Blooms appear on snow.[3][4]
  • Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor, made by upgrading iron gear with the matching material.[1]
  • Nether-free brewing: the Cold Brewing Stand uses snowballs as fuel, and Frozen Petals make Awkward Potions like Nether Wart does.[1][5]
  • Creatures and food: peaceful Auroral Nautili that show up during auroras, tiny Snowlette pets, and treats like Hot Cocoa and Frosted Cookies.[6][7][8]

The piece of Auroral this pack cares about most is Shimmering Ice. You make it by using Ice on a Glacial Basin. It is a glowing ice that never melts and hydrates crops.[1]

In the quest book

Auroral shows up in the "Pina Colada" chapter, which sits in the "Main Questline" group as chapter 6 of 31 and has 39 quests. The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path.[9]

The quest that uses it is "Weird-tasting Fruit Juice" quest. It comes after a quest in "Pina Colada" and asks you to put Shimmering Ice and a Time Crystal Block on either side of a grown Pineapple, with an extractor above, to get Temporal Pineapple Juice.[9]

After it comes "Time-Iced Juice" quest, and that in turn leads to "Paradoxical Mixing" quest, which also needs the Artificial Fruits quest. One quest in this chapter isn't covered here, so check the quest book for it.[9]

How do you get started with Auroral?

7 parts

Auroral is built around one loop: wait for an aurora, fill a basin with Liquid Aura, then turn ordinary materials into Shimmersteel gear. Here is the order I'd do it in, so you don't waste your first night.[3][5]

First, find a cold biome and wait for an aurora

Auroras only happen at night in cold biomes: Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga. Each night in one of those has a 33% chance of an aurora, and the pack leaves aurora.aurora_chance at the mod default of 0.33. So set up camp in the cold and be patient.[3][4][10]

Second, craft the Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation, so make it first.[5]

Place it under open sky in a cold biome. During an aurora it slowly fills with Liquid Aura. In this pack basin.basin_fill_rate is 100 ticks between fills and basin.basin_max_aura is 3 levels. Both are the same as the mod defaults.[5][10]

Third, harvest Frozen Petals

During an aurora, Aurora Blooms spawn on snow. They grow through four stages, and only a fully grown (stage 3) bloom drops Frozen Petals. Breaking an immature one gives you nothing. Any blooms left when the aurora ends wilt at sunrise, so harvest while the lights are up. Auroral Nautiluses can also drop petals during auroras.[5][11]

Fourth, turn petals into Aurora Shards

Right-click the basin with Frozen Petals while it has aura and they become an Aurora Shard. You need shards for the smithing template below, and also for the Hearthwood Log and the Aurora Lantern.[1][12]

Fifth, make your first Shimmersteel Ingot

Craft Unrefined Shimmersteel, then right-click the basin with it during an aurora to refine it into a Shimmersteel Ingot.[1][12]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: auroral:unrefined_shimmersteel

Sixth, upgrade your iron gear

Shimmersteel tools are upgrades of iron ones at a Smithing Table. You need the Smithing Template first, then an ingot and the iron tool.[1][12]

Shimmersteel gear repairs itself during auroras. aurora.aurora_repair_rate is 1 durability per second, the same as the mod default.[3][10]

Worth making early

Once you have a shard, the Hearthwood Log helps you get more auroras. Light it with Flint and Steel. A lit log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Three logs stack for +45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log does nothing extra.[13]

The Cold Brewing Stand gives you potions without the Nether. It uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder, and Frozen Petals brew an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle just like Nether Wart. The pack also stacks snowballs to 64 through items.snowball_max_stack_size (vanilla is 16), so fuel is easy to carry.[5][14]

Tip: Auroral shows up in the main questline too. In the Piña Colada chapter (group Main Questline, chapter 6 of 31), the quest "Weird-tasting Fruit Juice" quest comes after the Pineapple quest and asks for Shimmering Ice. You make Shimmering Ice by infusing ordinary Ice in the basin, so a working basin pays off beyond the mod itself.[1][9]

How does Auroral work?

7 parts

Auroral's core mechanics run on a nightly aurora event, a Glacial Basin that soaks up Liquid Aura under open sky, and a few special blocks that bend the odds. Once you understand that loop, the rest of the mod falls into place.[4][15]

The aurora clock

Each night in a cold biome, an aurora has a 33% chance to begin. The pack keeps the mod default for this: aurora.aurora_chance is 0.33. Cold biomes here means Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga.[3][4][10]

How long it lasts is set by aurora.aurora_min_duration and aurora.aurora_max_duration. The pack uses the defaults of 6,000 and 12,000 ticks.[10]

While the lights are up, several systems switch on:[4]

  • Basins that are exposed to the sky slowly fill with Liquid Aura.[4][15]
  • Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped. aurora.aurora_repair_rate is 1 durability per second in the pack.[4][10]
  • Aurora Blooms appear on snow, and Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players.[4]

The Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation. It collects Liquid Aura only under open sky while an aurora is active, and it shows its aura level as a fraction of its maximum. Out of the box it holds up to 3 levels, and the pack leaves basin.basin_max_aura at 3.[10][15][16]

Glacial BasinMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

The fill speed is basin.basin_fill_rate, the number of ticks between each aura fill. The pack value is 100, the mod default, and lower means faster.[10]

  1. Place the basin under open sky.[15]
  2. Wait for an aurora and watch it fill with glowing Liquid Aura.[15]
  3. Right-click the basin while holding the input item to transform it.[15][16]

Each transformation has its own aura cost:[15]

Watch out: A Shimmersteel Ingot needs the basin to be completely full, and it consumes all 3 levels of Liquid Aura at once. If you try with too little, the basin tells you how many aura levels it requires.[15][16][17]
Tip: Keep several basins out under the sky to collect more aura per event. Each one needs a clear view of the sky.[15]

This is the input for the 3-level infusion.

Hearthwood Log: tilting the odds

Right-click a Hearthwood Log with Flint and Steel to light it. A burnt-out log can be relit the same way. A lit log burns for 168,000 ticks (7 in-game days), but the timer only runs while its chunk is active. The pack keeps the default for hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_burn_time.[10][13]

A lit log gives Frostbite Immunity within 16 blocks, which is the default for hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_frostbite_radius. It also sets Phantoms on fire within 16 blocks, and villagers nearby may offer better trades. The discount option hearthwood_log.hearthwood_log_villager_discount is 0.2 in the pack.[10][13]

The big one is the aurora catalyst. A lit log within 32 blocks of a player in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which takes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing.[4][13]

Cold Brewing Stand

The Cold Brewing Stand works like the vanilla brewing stand, but its fuel is snowballs instead of Blaze Powder. You can load up to 20. Frozen Petals act like Nether Wart to make an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle, and you brew the rest of the tree with standard ingredients.[19]

Snowballs are plentiful here. The pack sets items.snowball_max_stack_size to 64, where vanilla is 16.[14]

Farming: Shimmering Ice and Shimmer Soil

Shimmering Ice never melts, glows at light level 8, and hydrates farmland within 4 blocks like water does. You get it by infusing regular ice in a basin, or rarely find it in aurora-touched frozen biomes. Glow Leeks can only be planted on it.[18][20]

Till snow with a Shimmersteel Hoe to make Shimmer Soil, which grows crops 3x faster at night and 5x faster during an aurora. Paired with Shimmering Ice, that gives you a farm that needs no water channels.[16][18]

Smithing upgrades

Shimmersteel gear isn't crafted from scratch. You upgrade an iron tool at a Smithing Table with the Smithing Template and a Shimmersteel Ingot. Shimmerweave armor works the same way, using Shimmerweave Fabric as the addition, as with the Shimmerweave Goggles.[12][16]

Nautilus handling

Wild Nautili stay after the aurora ends for nautilus.nautilus_despawn_delay, which is 600 ticks (30 seconds) in the pack. A tamed one no longer despawns when the aurora ends. Each Aurora Shard you feed a wild one has a 33% chance to tame it. Riding charge boost tops out at 3x, set by nautilus.nautilus_boost_strength.[7][10]

Eating a Roasted Snowball stops wild Nautili spawning near you. A Sugared Roasted Snowball makes peace again.[21][22]

How do you progress through Auroral?

7 parts

Auroral has no formal tier ladder in this pack. The recipes and guide pages point to a clear order, though: catch an aurora, collect its materials, then move into Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear. Here is that path, step by step.[4][12]

Step 1: Grab the guidebook

Start with The Auroral Guidebook, which is a shapeless craft.[12]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: auroral:auroral_guide

Step 2: Auroras and Frozen Petals

Everything starts with auroras. Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance of starting one. While it is active, the mod's magical effects switch on, and Aurora Blooms appear on cold-biome surfaces such as snow and ice. Blooms left behind when the aurora ends wilt at sunrise.[4][11]

Harvest fully grown blooms during an aurora to get Frozen Petals. The guide calls the blooms the gateway to most of the mod's content. Petals feed several recipes, including Glow Leek Seeds, Frosted Cookies and the decorative Aurora Bloom.[11][12][23]

Step 3: Tilt the odds with Hearthwood

Waiting for a lucky night is slow, so get a Hearthwood Log and light it with Flint and Steel. A lit log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds 15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for 45%, which the guide says brings the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing.[4][13]

Lit logs also give Frostbite Immunity within 16 blocks and set Phantoms on fire if they stray close, so they are worth placing around your base anyway.[13]

Step 4: Shimmersteel

Auroras also fill surfaces exposed to the sky with Liquid Aura, which the guide describes as the substance needed for Shimmersteel infusion. On the recipe side, Unrefined Shimmersteel is a simple shapeless craft.[4][12]

The tools are smithing upgrades of the matching iron tool, using the template and a Shimmersteel Ingot. That covers the Shimmersteel Sword, Shimmersteel Pickaxe, Shimmersteel Axe, Shimmersteel Shovel, Shimmersteel Hoe and Shimmersteel Bow. Here is the pickaxe as an example.[12]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: auroral:shimmersteel_pickaxe_smithing

Tip: Shimmersteel tools repair themselves while equipped during an aurora, so the gear rewards you for being out in the cold.[4]

Step 5: Shimmerweave armor

The armor line is Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings and Shimmerweave Skates. Each is a smithing upgrade of the matching iron armor piece that uses the same template, with Shimmerweave Fabric in place of the ingot. Shimmerweave armor repairs itself during an aurora too.[4][12]

Extras once you have Shimmersteel

  • Aurora Lantern: a light source (level 15) that grants immunity to the Darkness effect while held, handy against the Warden. Its recipe uses a Shimmersteel Ingot.[12][24]
  • Cold Brewing Stand: a shaped craft that also uses a Shimmersteel Ingot.[12]

Where it shows up in the quest book

Auroral appears once in the quest book: "Weird-tasting Fruit Juice" quest, in the Piña Colada chapter of the Main Questline group (chapter 6 of 31). It comes after a quest in "Pina Colada" and leads into "Time-Iced Juice" quest.[9]

The quest asks for Shimmering Ice and a Time Crystal Block. You place one on each side of a growing Pineapple, with an extractor above, to get Temporal Pineapple Juice.[9]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Auroral?

2 parts

In this pack, the quest sources show Auroral in one place: the Piña Colada chapter. It sits in the Main Questline group as chapter 6 of 31 in the book, and it has 39 quests. The only Auroral item the quest book asks for is Shimmering Ice.[9]

The quest that needs Shimmering Ice

"Weird-tasting Fruit Juice" quest asks you to hand in Shimmering Ice and a Time Crystal Block. The quest text says a regular juicer won't be enough to get what you need from the Pineapple. You place and grow a Pineapple like any other crop, then put a Shimmering Ice and a Time Crystal Block on either side of it, with an extractor above, to extract Temporal Pineapple Juice.[9]

The order leading there and beyond

The Shimmering Ice quest sits in a chain that starts with a black hole and ends at the chapter's final quest. Here is that chain in order.[9]

  1. "Black Hole Juicing" quest asks for a Black Hole block and an Extractor. You set the extractor above the black hole with a one-block gap in between to extract Liquid Antimatter. The quest warns that you need a block placer that places items every tick, or the Black Hole will consume your extractor and nearby blocks. It also says not to build this inside a Compact Machine.[9]
  2. a quest in "Pina Colada" comes after Black Hole Juicing and asks for a Pineapple. The quest text says you decondense Liquid Antimatter into chemical Antimatter and convert an Insanium Apple.[9]
  3. "Weird-tasting Fruit Juice" quest comes after the Pineapple quest. This is the step that asks for Shimmering Ice.[9]
  4. "Time-Iced Juice" quest follows the Shimmering Ice quest and asks for a bucket of Temporal Pineapple Juice.[9]
  5. "Paradoxical Mixing" quest comes after Time-Iced Juice and "Artificial Fruits" quest. It asks for a Paradox Mixer and a Pineapple Juice bucket, and the quest text says to use the Paradox Mixer to combine the Flashpine and the Temporal Pineapple Juice.[9]
  6. "Piña Colada" quest comes after a quest in "Pina Colada", "Bedrockium Mug" quest, a quest in "Pina Colada", a quest in "Pina Colada" and Paradoxical Mixing. The quest text calls the Piña Colada the ultimate end-goal of the pack.[9]
Watch out: Do not build the black hole extractor setup inside a Compact Machine. The quest text says the room does not tick reliably while you are outside it, so your block placer falls behind and the Black Hole will consume your setup.[9]

Which Auroral config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Good news: in this pack, every Auroral option you can see in the config files is set to the mod's own default. The pack changed nothing, so anything you know about the mod's default tuning applies here. Below are the options you're most likely to want to tweak, with the exact values this pack uses.[25][26][27]

Aurora events

Since basins only fill during auroras, the chance and duration options decide how quickly you get Liquid Aura for your crafting.[1][26]

Gear and combat

Hearthwood Log and nautilus

Client visuals

The client options are all on or at their default. aurora_visuals.show_aurora_effect, aurora_visuals.show_aurora_particles, aurora_visuals.play_aurora_ambient_sound and footprints.show_footprints are all true. aurora_visuals.aurora_intensity is 1, with a range of 0.0 to 2.0.[25]

Tip: If the aurora particles or sounds are too much for your setup, these client options are the ones to switch off. They only affect visuals and audio on your side, not the aurora itself.[25]

Snowball stack size

items.snowball_max_stack_size is 64 in this pack, which is the mod's default. The file notes that vanilla stacks snowballs to 16, so you carry far more of them. That matters for the Shimmersteel Bow, which uses snowballs as ammo. The allowed range is 16 to 64.[1][27]

What changed in Auroral between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Auroral 1.21.1-1.1.1. The mod was already in the pack by version 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been part of Aero for a long time.[2]

The only mod changelog I have is for 1.1.1, so that is what is covered below. I have no pack changelog entries about Auroral, so I can't tell you what changed for it between individual pack releases.[2][28]

Auroral 1.1.1 (the version in this pack)

This is a compatibility and polish update. It makes the aurora render correctly with Iris and Sodium plus a shader pack, and it makes the start sound quieter.[28]

  • Shader fix: with Iris, Sodium and a shader pack such as Complementary installed, the aurora used to break into visible triangle facets across the sky. Now the ribbon blends through the shader pack's atmospheric pipeline and glows smoothly.[28]
  • Start sound fix: the sound now plays on the weather sound channel at 30% volume, and only once per night.[28]
  • Before this, the start sound played at full volume on the ambient channel. It could also replay if a Hearthwood Log and an Aurora Shard forced a second aurora during the same night.[28]
  • Requirement change: Auroral now needs NeoForge 21.1.215 or newer.[28]
Tip: If you play with shaders, the rendering fix is the one you will notice most. The aurora should look like a smooth glow now, not a sky full of triangles.[28]
