What is Nutritional?

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships with Nutritional version 1.2.3, using the file nutritional-26.1.2-1.2.3.jar.[1]

It is not a recent addition. The pack's mod list shows it was already included in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[1]

How do you get started with Nutritional?

4 parts

Good news: Nutritional doesn't ask you to craft anything to get going. This guide has no in-pack recipes or quests for the mod to point you to, so there is no crafting order to follow. Your first steps are about learning the screen and the rules, then eating well.[2][3]

Open the nutrition screen

The mod adds a keybind called "Open Nutrition Screen", found under the "Nutritional" category in your controls. Bind it to something comfortable, then open the screen titled "Nutrition" to see where you stand.[2]

The screen has a HUD toggle ("HUD: On" or "HUD: Off"), a "Move HUD" button and an "Always Show" switch. In the placement screen you drag the widget, nudge it with the arrow keys, and use Reset to put it back.[2]

Know where you start

A nutrient falls back to a starting value of 50 when its own definition doesn't set one, set by nutrition.starting_default. That is the mod default and this pack leaves it alone.[3]

Nutrients decay over time. decay.enabled is the master switch and it is on, and decay.multiplier is 1, the mod default. Food yield is scaled by nutrition.multiplier, also 1.[3]

Eat varied meals

Variety matters. nutrition.loss_per_extra_nutrient is 15, meaning a food loses 15% of its nutrient value for each additional nutrient it carries. A food that covers lots of groups at once isn't as strong as it looks.[3]

The mod's advancements give you a simple checklist: the root one asks you to eat balanced meals, then there are advancements for drinking milk or picking up dairy, eating protein-rich food, and eating something from every nutrient group. After that you can aim for the Nourished and Gourmand tiers.[2]

Tip: Overeating is off in this pack: nutrition.allow_overeating is false, so you can't eat when your hunger bar is full. The option's own description says allowing it is required for survival in peaceful mode, so keep that in mind if you play peaceful.[3]

Dying is gentler here

The pack changed death.penalty_amount to 0, down from the mod default of 15, so dying doesn't subtract anything from your nutrients. death.penalty_floor is 30, and death.penalty_reset_below_floor is true, which the config describes as raising any nutrient below the floor up to the floor at death.[3]

How does Nutritional work?

5 parts

The sources for Nutritional describe a diet system. Foods feed nutrient groups, those values decay over time, and the mod's screen and HUD show you where you stand. Dairy and protein are named as food groups, and Nourished and Gourmand are named as tiers.[2][3]

Seeing your nutrition

The mod adds a keybind called Open Nutrition Screen, and the screen is titled Nutrition. It has a HUD widget you can toggle on or off, move, and set to always show. In the placement screen you drag the widget, nudge it with the arrow keys, hold Shift to move 10px at a time, and hold Shift while dragging to ignore snapping.[2]

How food feeds your nutrients

A nutrient that has no starting value in its own definition begins at the fallback set by nutrition.starting_default. This pack sets it to 50, the same as the mod default.[3]

nutrition.multiplier scales how much nutrient you get from food. It is 1 in this pack, which is also the mod default.[3]

Foods that count toward several nutrients are penalised. nutrition.loss_per_extra_nutrient is the percentage of nutrient value lost for each additional nutrient on the same food. At the pack's value of 15, that is 15% per extra nutrient, unchanged from the mod default.[3]

nutrition.allow_overeating is false in this pack, so you cannot eat when your hunger bar is full. Its description says it is required for survival in peaceful mode, so keep that in mind if you play on peaceful.[3]

Decay

Nutrients fade over time. decay.enabled is the master switch and it is on in this pack. decay.multiplier is a global multiplier on the decay rate, set to 1 (the mod default). It stacks with per-nutrient decay and with the Nutrient Decay Rate attribute.[2][3]

The mod also has a Nutrient Absorption attribute. The sources here do not say what modifies either attribute.[2]

Dying

The pack changed the death penalty. death.penalty_amount is the amount subtracted from each nutrient on death. The mod default is 15, but this pack sets it to 0, so dying does not subtract anything from your nutrients.[3]

death.penalty_floor is 30, the same as the mod default. It is the value below which the death penalty stops removing more. death.penalty_reset_below_floor is true, which means nutrients below the floor at death are raised to the floor.[3]

Logging

Both logging options are off in this pack. logging.missing_food logs items named in nutrient or food_hint JSON that are not in the item registry. logging.missing_nutrients logs food items that have no nutrient mapping.[3]

Unverified Which foods count toward which nutrient is defined in the mod's data files, for example the dairy nutrient item tag. The sources here do not show those contents.

Which Nutritional config options matter?

3 parts

Everything for Nutritional lives in one file, config/nutritional-server.toml. Only one value in it was changed by this pack: death.penalty_amount. It is the one you will feel most. Every other option that lists a mod default is left at that default, so here is what the important ones do and how the pack sets them.[3]

The one change: death penalty

death.penalty_amount is the amount subtracted from each nutrient when you die. The mod default is 15, but this pack sets it to 0, so dying does not knock your nutrients down.[3]

The other death options are still there. death.penalty_floor is 30, the same as the mod default, and it is the value below which the penalty stops removing more. death.penalty_reset_below_floor is true, which means nutrients that are below the floor at death are raised to the floor.[3]

Nutrient gain and decay

  • nutrition.multiplier: global multiplier for how many nutrients you get from food. The pack leaves it at 1, the mod default.[3]
  • nutrition.loss_per_extra_nutrient: the percentage of nutrient value lost for each additional nutrient on the same food. At 15, that is 15% per extra nutrient, and it matches the mod default.[3]
  • nutrition.starting_default: the fallback starting value for a nutrient when its definition does not set one. The pack uses 50, the mod default.[3]
  • decay.enabled: the master switch for nutrient decay. It is true in the pack.[3]
  • decay.multiplier: global multiplier for the decay rate, set to 1 like the mod default. It stacks with per-nutrient decay and the nutrient_decay_rate attribute.[3]

Overeating and logging

nutrition.allow_overeating is false in this pack, so you cannot eat when your hunger is full. The config comment notes that this option is required for survival in peaceful mode.[3]

The logging options logging.missing_food and logging.missing_nutrients are both false. They are mainly useful for pack makers: one logs items referenced by nutrient or food hint JSON that are not in the item registry, and the other logs food items with no nutrient mapping.[3]

Tip: If you run your own server and want the mod's stock death behaviour back, set death.penalty_amount back to the mod default instead of the pack's 0.[3]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as nutritional, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
