What is Natural Sizes?

Natural Sizes is a lightweight Vanilla+ mod that makes your world feel more alive. Every mob gets a slightly different random size when it spawns, so no two zombies or cows look exactly alike.[1]

The size limits can be changed in the mod's config file, so the variety can be tuned to your taste. The mod's author also says modpacks are free to use it.[1]

This pack ships Natural Sizes 1.2, and it has been included since version 1.0.2 or earlier.[2]

How do you get started with Natural Sizes?

1 part

There is nothing to craft to get started with Natural Sizes. It is a lightweight mod that gives every mob a slightly different random size when it spawns, so your world feels more varied. You just play and notice the differences.[1]

What the pack sets

The size range lives in the mod's config file. In this pack, [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.minScale]] is 0.9 and [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.maxScale]] is 1.1. Both match the mod's defaults, so the pack has not changed them. Mobs end up slightly smaller or larger than normal.[1][3]

  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.affectPlayer]] is false in this pack, so your own size is not randomized.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleHealth]] is false in this pack, so max health does not scale with size.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleDamage]] is false in this pack, so attack damage does not scale with size.[3]

In practice, a mob can look a little bigger or smaller than usual, but its max health and attack damage do not follow its size.[3]

Tip: If you want a wider spread of sizes, you can change the minimum and maximum scale in the config file. Both accept values from 0.1 to 16.0, and the pack ships with 0.9 and 1.1.[1][3]

How does Natural Sizes work?

2 parts

Natural Sizes is a small Vanilla+ mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems to learn here. What it does is simple: every mob gets a slightly different random size when it spawns, so your world looks a bit more varied. All the control you get lives in one config file.[1]

Size limits

The size of a spawned mob is kept between two limits, set by [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.minScale]] and [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.maxScale]]. Both are scale multipliers. In this pack the minimum is 0.9 and the maximum is 1.1, which are the same as the mod's defaults, so the pack has not changed them.[3]

Both options accept values from 0.1 to 16.0. If you want a more dramatic effect, widen the gap between the two. If you want the variation even subtler, tighten it.[3]

Other options

  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.affectPlayer]] decides whether the player's size is also randomized. It is false in this pack, so your own size stays untouched.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleDamage]] decides whether attack damage scales with size. It is false in this pack, so a bigger or smaller mob hits with the same damage.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleHealth]] decides whether max health scales with size. It is false in this pack, so size is cosmetic as far as health goes.[3]
Tip: With health and damage scaling both off, a larger mob is not tougher in this pack. If you want size to matter in combat, those are the two options to switch on in the config file.[3]

Which Natural Sizes config options matter?

2 parts

Natural Sizes gives every spawned mob a slightly different random size, and the size limits are set in a config file. Everything lives in [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.minScale]] and its neighbours, all under the General Settings group. Here is exactly how this pack sets them.[1][3]

Size limits

  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.minScale]] is 0.9 in this pack, the smallest size multiplier a mob can get. That is the same as the mod default, so the pack did not change it. The allowed range is 0.1 to 16.0.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.maxScale]] is 1.1 in this pack, the largest size multiplier. This also matches the mod default, so the pack left it alone. The allowed range is 0.1 to 16.0.[3]

So in this pack mobs only vary by a small amount, between 0.9 and 1.1 times their normal size. That keeps the effect subtle.[1][3]

Player, health and damage

  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.affectPlayer]] is false, so your own size is not randomized.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleHealth]] is false, so a mob's max health does not change with its size.[3]
  • [[config:config/naturalsizes-common.toml#General Settings.shouldScaleDamage]] is false, so attack damage does not change with size either.[3]
Tip: With health and damage scaling both off, the size changes are purely visual. A slightly bigger mob is not tougher and does not hit harder.[3]
Tip: If you want more dramatic size differences, widen the gap between minScale and maxScale. Both accept values from 0.1 to 16.0.[1][3]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as naturalsizes, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
