What is Miner's Helmet?

2 parts

Miner's Helmet is a very simple mod: it adds a mining helmet that gives you dynamic lighting, so you can light your own way through dark places like caves and ravines.[1]

The pack includes version 2.1.3 of the mod. It has been in the pack since 1.0.2 or earlier.[2]

Where it helps

  • Caves and other dark areas, where the helmet lights your path.[1]
  • The Ancient City, though the helmet does not protect you from the Darkness effect.[1]
  • The Nether, for lighting your way while you hunt for Netherite.[1]
  • Dark underwater areas such as trenches, since the helmet lights your path while you swim.[1]

Getting one

The recipe for the helmet unlocks as soon as you obtain a Lantern.[1]

Mobs can wear it too. Zombies can spawn with an iron pickaxe and a mining helmet, and when you kill one there is a chance it drops its helmet. The mod has a config option to turn this off. The mobs that can spawn as miners are listed in the tag #mining_helmet:miner_mobs, which covers Zombies, Husks and Zombie Villagers, so it is easy to customise.[1]

How do you get started with Miner's Helmet?

2 parts

Miner's Helmet is a very simple mod: it adds one item, the Mining Helmet, a helmet that gives you dynamic lighting. Wear it and it lights your way, so you don't need to keep placing torches in dark places.[1][3]

Your first steps

  1. Get hold of a Lantern. The mod unlocks the Mining Helmet recipe in your recipe book as soon as you obtain one.[1]
  2. Craft the Mining Helmet with the recipe below.[4]
  3. Put it on your head and take it into the dark. It lights up caves, ravines, dark underwater areas, the Nether and the Ancient City.[1]

This is the in-pack recipe, a shaped crafting recipe added by the mod itself.

Watch out: In the Ancient City the helmet brightens the rooms, but it does not protect you from the Darkness effect.[1]

Miner mobs

Some mobs can spawn as miners, holding a pickaxe and wearing the helmet. The mobs that can do this are listed in a tag, #mining_helmet:miner_mobs, which covers Zombies, Husks and Zombie Villagers. When you kill one, there is a chance it drops its helmet.[1]

How often this happens is set by Mobs.minerSpawnChance. This pack sets it to 20, meaning 1 in 20 of the tagged mobs spawn with a helmet. Setting it to 0 stops them from spawning with helmets.[5]

How does Miner's Helmet work?

5 parts

Good news: there's nothing to set up here. Miner's Helmet is a very simple mod with no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to manage. It adds a single item, the Mining Helmet, which lights your way with dynamic lighting in dark places.[1][3]

Getting the helmet

The recipe unlocks as soon as you pick up a Lantern. The block below shows the exact in-pack recipe.[1][4]

What it does for you

  • It lights up dark areas such as caves and ravines, and also the Ancient City and the Nether.[1]
  • It also lights up dark underwater areas, so you can swim through trenches with it on.[1]
  • It does not protect you from the Darkness effect in the Ancient City.[1]

Repairing it

The helmet is repaired with anything in the iron armor repair materials tag, so whatever repairs iron armor in this pack also repairs your helmet.[6]

Miner mobs

Mobs can wear the helmet too. The mobs that can spawn as miners are listed in a tag: Zombies, Husks and Zombie Villagers. Zombies can also spawn with iron pickaxes. When you kill a miner, there's a chance it drops its helmet.[1][7]

In this pack, Mobs.minerSpawnChance is set to 20. That means a tagged mob has a 1 in 20 chance to spawn with a Mining Helmet. Setting it to 0 stops mobs from spawning with helmets.[5]

Smoother lighting with Lucent

The mod's project page recommends pairing it with a separate dynamic lighting mod called Lucent. It is not required, but when it is installed the helmet uses it instead for smoother, more performant lighting.[1]

How do you progress through Miner's Helmet?

3 parts

Good news for keeping things simple: in this pack the Mining Helmet from Miner's Helmet is a single item. The recipe dump lists one recipe for the mod, and it makes the helmet. No upgrade steps or separate tiers show up in the sources, so there is no tier ladder to climb.[4]

Getting the helmet

The helmet is crafted at a normal crafting grid with a shaped recipe that comes from the mod itself, not changed by the pack. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

Repairing it

The mod has a repair tag for the helmet, and that tag points at the vanilla iron armor repair tag. So whatever items are in that iron armor repair tag are what the helmet accepts for repairs.[6]

Where it fits in the quest book

Which Miner's Helmet config options matter?

1 part

The Miner's Helmet mod is very small, and one config option is the one you'll most likely care about: how often mobs spawn wearing a mining helmet. It lives in the server config file, so it applies to the world you're playing in.[1][5]

Miner mob spawn chance

Mobs.minerSpawnChance is set to 20 in this pack. It is a "1 in x" chance for applicable tagged mobs to spawn with a Mining Helmet, so in this pack that works out to 1 in 20. Setting it to 0 stops them from spawning with helmets at all.[5]

Which mobs count is decided by a tag, #mining_helmet:miner_mobs. It covers the original Zombie, plus Husks and Zombie Villagers. Because it is a tag, you can customise which mobs can be miners.[1]

Tip: If you don't want helmeted mobs in your world, set the spawn chance to 0 in the server config. The mod page also says mobs wearing a helmet can be switched off through a config option.[1][5]

What changed in Miner's Helmet between versions?

1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Miner's Helmet 2.1.3. The mod was already in the pack as of 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a new addition in this release.[2]

Miner's Helmet 2.1.3

  • Updated to 26.1.2.[8]
  • Added a baby model for the Miner's Helmet.[8]

The jar in this pack is mining_helmet-26.1.2-2.1.3.jar, which matches the 26.1.2 update listed above.[2][8]
