Magnum Torch is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 26.1.0. Powerful torches to prevent mob spawns around your home in a large area. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Magnum Torch?

3 parts

Magnum Torch adds three very powerful torches that stop mobs from spawning in a huge area around your base. Only natural spawns are blocked, so spawners and raids still work as they should.[1]

This pack includes Magnum Torch 26.1.0, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.2 or earlier.[2]

The three torches

The type of torch you craft decides which mobs it keeps away:[1]

  • Diamond: all monsters, such as zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders and phantoms.[1]
  • Emerald: passive mobs such as wandering traders and trader llamas. Animals are technically affected too, but they only appear during world generation or from breeding, and the torches don't touch either of those.[1]
  • Amethyst: cave and water mobs, such as bats, all squids, axolotls and all fish.[1]
Tip: Only new spawns are prevented. Mobs that are already in the world won't vanish when you place a torch, so clear out any that are already around your base.[1]

Customisation

Each torch type can be configured: its effective range, the shape it covers (cuboid, cylinder or ellipsoid), a whitelist or blacklist for individual mobs, and the kind of mobs it blocks (monster, water, cave or passive). The item tooltip shows you the important values for the torch you are holding.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

Unverified The sources here do not show a chapter, group or position for this mod in the pack's quest book, and they do not show whether the ATM Star path uses it.

How do you get started with Magnum Torch?

3 parts

Magnum Torch adds three torches that stop mobs from spawning in a huge area around them. Each torch type targets different mobs, so the first thing to decide is which threat you want gone from your base.[1][3]

One thing to know up front: a magnum torch only stops new spawns. Mobs already in the world will not vanish when you place one.[1]

Step 1: Diamond Magnum Torch, stop monsters

Make Diamond Magnum Torch first. In this pack it blocks the monster category (zombies, skeletons, creepers, spiders, phantoms and so on), which is the danger that matters most when you are setting up a safe base. It blocks the natural, patrol and structure spawn reasons, but spawner spawns are not blocked. The switch for the category is diamond_torch.blocked_mob_categories.monster.[1][4][5]

Step 2: Emerald Magnum Torch, stop passive mobs and events

Next, make Emerald Magnum Torch. In this pack it blocks the creature category (animals, passive mobs, villagers and similar) plus the natural and event spawn reasons. The event reason covers things like zombie sieges, raids and wandering trader visits. The mod description also names wandering traders and trader llamas as targets. The category switch is emerald_torch.blocked_mob_categories.creature.[1][4][5]

It has the longest reach of the torches in this pack.[5]

Finally: Amethyst Magnum Torch, stop water mobs

Finish with Amethyst Magnum Torch. In this pack only the aquatic category is switched on for it (squids, fishes, axolotls and so on), together with the natural spawn reason. The aquatic switch is amethyst_torch.blocked_mob_categories.aquatic.[4][5]

Tip: Hold Shift over any of the torches in your inventory. The tooltip shows its horizontal and vertical block range, shape type, mob type, and its whitelist and blacklist, so you can check what a torch does before you place it.[3]

All the values above live in config/magnumtorch-server.toml. In this pack they match the mod's own defaults, so nothing has been changed for the three torches.[1][5]

        How does Magnum Torch work?

        6 parts

Magnum Torch has no machines, multiblocks, power or item handling to wire up. Each torch is a single block that stops mobs from spawning in a huge area around it. The real mechanics are which mobs it stops, how far it reaches and what shape the area has, and the pack sets all of that in the file diamond_torch.shape_type and its neighbours in the same config.[3][5]

        What a torch does

A torch only stops new spawns. Mobs already in the world do not vanish when you place one, so clear out anything that is already around your base.[1]

Which mobs a torch blocks depends on its type. The item tooltip shows the details: hold Shift to see the mob type, the horizontal and vertical block range, the shape type, and the whitelist and blacklist.[1][3]

        The torches in this pack

The mod adds a diamond, an emerald and an amethyst torch, and each has its own section in the config, so they can behave quite differently. Here is how the pack has them set up.[5][6]

        • Diamond Magnum Torch blocks the monster category, which covers night time monsters, illagers and nether creatures. It stops natural, patrol and structure spawns, so pillager patrols and zombified piglins from nether portals are covered too.[5][6]
        • Emerald Magnum Torch blocks the creature category, which covers animals, passive mobs and villagers. It stops natural and event spawns, which the config describes as game events such as zombie sieges, raids and wandering trader visits.[5][6]
        • Amethyst Magnum Torch blocks the aquatic category, which covers squids, fish and axolotls. It stops natural spawns only.[5][6]

The category switches are diamond_torch.blocked_mob_categories.monster, emerald_torch.blocked_mob_categories.creature and amethyst_torch.blocked_mob_categories.aquatic. Each torch has all the category options, so a torch could be pointed at a different category.[5]

        Spawn reasons

Besides the mob category, each torch has a list of spawn reasons it blocks. Natural spawns are blocked by every torch. These are monsters at night, cats in villages and phantoms in the sky.[5]

The other reasons are patrol, event, structure, reinforcement, spawner, summoned and triggered. In this pack, reinforcement, spawner, summoned and triggered are off for every torch. That means monster spawners, zombie reinforcements, iron golems from villagers, skeleton horse traps and wardens from sculk shriekers are not stopped by any torch.[5]

The reasons that differ between torches are diamond_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.patrol and diamond_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.structure (on for the diamond torch) and emerald_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.event (on for the emerald torch).[5]

        Range and shape

Range is measured in chunk sections of 16x16x16 blocks, with a horizontal value for the x-z plane and a vertical value for the y dimension. Each can be set from 1 to 16. Here is what the pack uses for every torch.[5]

The allowed shapes are ELLIPSOID, CYLINDER and CUBOID. The config describes the choice as being between maximum and euclidean metrics.[5]

        Whitelist and blacklist

Every torch has a mob whitelist and a mob blacklist, and both are empty in the pack. A whitelisted mob is still allowed to spawn even if its category is blocked. A blacklisted mob is blocked even if its category is not. See emerald_torch.mob_whitelist and emerald_torch.mob_blacklist for the emerald torch.[5]

Entries use the format namespace:path, and the namespace can be left out to mean minecraft. Tags work if you write them as #namespace:path. An asterisk works as a wildcard, and starting an entry with ! excludes it, which helps when another pattern has already matched it.[5]

Tip: Because every setting is per torch, you can change what a torch does without touching the others. The mod's own description gives the example of a torch that only prevents phantoms and another that only handles wandering traders.[1]

        Getting and moving torches

The pack removes the mod's own crafting recipes for all the torches and adds a fabricating recipe for each instead.[4][7]

When you break a torch it drops itself as an item, so you can pick it up and move it.[8][9][10]

How do you progress through Magnum Torch?

              2 parts

Magnum Torch adds the Amethyst Magnum Torch, the Diamond Magnum Torch and the Emerald Magnum Torch, and all of them sit in the mod's magnum torch block tag. In this pack, the interesting part is how you get them, because the pack changes how they are made.[6]

The pack replaces the crafting recipes

The pack removes the mod's own recipes for the diamond, emerald and amethyst magnum torches. So whatever the mod does by default, that is not how you get these torches here. Instead, the pack adds a fabricating recipe for each torch.[4][7]

Every torch has its own fabricating recipe, and each recipe is added by the pack. They are shown below exactly as they are in the pack.[4]

                    Picking them back up

Each torch block drops itself when broken, as long as it survives an explosion, so you can pick one up and move it.[8][9][10]

Tip: Because the pack removed the mod's default recipes, do not rely on crafting guides written for the standalone mod. Look the torch up in your recipe viewer and use the fabricating recipe shown there.[4][7]

Which Magnum Torch config options matter?

                    4 parts

Magnum Torch keeps all its settings in config/magnumtorch-server.toml, with a separate set of options for the diamond, emerald and amethyst torch. The good news is that this pack leaves every one of those values at the mod default, so nothing here has been tweaked by the pack. Here is what the pack actually runs with.[5]

                    Which mobs each torch blocks

                    Which spawn reasons are blocked

All three torches block natural spawns, because diamond_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.natural, emerald_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.natural and amethyst_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.natural are all true.[1][5]

The diamond torch also blocks pillager patrols and the structure reason (zombified piglin from nether portals), through diamond_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.patrol and diamond_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.structure. The emerald torch also blocks game event spawns (zombie sieges, raids, wandering trader visits) through emerald_torch.blocked_spawn_reasons.event. The amethyst torch blocks natural spawns only.[5]

Reinforcement, spawner, summoned and triggered are false for all three torches. That means mob spawners, summoned iron golems, zombie reinforcements, skeleton horse traps and sculk shrieker wardens are not stopped by any of them.[1][5]

                    Range and shape

Ranges are measured in chunk sections (16x16x16 blocks), and each range option accepts values from 1 to 16. The shape option accepts ELLIPSOID, CYLINDER or CUBOID.[5]

                    Whitelist and blacklist

The mob whitelist and blacklist options are empty for all three torches in this pack, for example diamond_torch.mob_whitelist and diamond_torch.mob_blacklist. The whitelist lets a mob still spawn even though its category is blocked. The blacklist blocks a mob even though its category is not.[1][5]

Tip: If you want to fine-tune a torch, entries use the format <namespace>:<path>, and the namespace can be left out for minecraft mobs. Tags start with #, an asterisk works as a wildcard, and starting an entry with ! makes sure it is excluded.[5]

What changed in Magnum Torch between versions?

                    1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Magnum Torch 26.1.0, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 26.1.x. The pack has carried the mod since FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier.[2]

                    Mod changelog

                    • v26.1.0-mc26.1.x (released 2026-04-28): the only listed change is an update to Minecraft 26.1.x.[11]

That is the only change the mod's own changelog records for this version, so there is nothing else to report for the release in this pack.[11]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Magnum Torch, so any pack-level changes to the mod across releases are not shown.
