What is Kindred Spirits?
Kindred Spirits is part of the pack's mod list. This version of the pack ships Kindred Spirits 1.0.7, in the file kindredspirits-26.1.2-1.0.7.jar.[1]
It isn't a new arrival. The pack's mod list shows it was already included in version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[1]
Unverified What Kindred Spirits actually does is not shown in the sources here. There is no platform description and no in-mod guidebook to draw on, so this page doesn't describe its features. Check the mod in-game for the details.
How do you get started with Kindred Spirits?
4 parts
Kindred Spirits adds spirit companions that you tame, bond with and level up. This pack changes several of the mod's progression numbers, so the values below are the pack's own. Here is the order I'd go in.[2][3]
Step one: tame a companion
Everything starts with taming a companion, and each species has its own trick for it. Taming is not a sure thing: one of the species' taming items has a 0.33 chance to tame a wild companion, so bring a few.[2][3]
- Direwolf: give a wolf a Golden Bone and tame the Direwolf it becomes.[2]
- Quokka: find one in a jungle and tame it.[2]
- Nightfox: use sculk on a fox, then tame the Nightfox it becomes.[2]
- Baby Dragon: let lava flow against a dragon egg and tame the Baby Dragon that hatches.[2]
- T-Rex: hatch a T-Rex Egg from suspicious sand. The pack scatters the odd block of suspicious sand into beach sand in new chunks, and brushing it can turn up the egg.[2][3]

The Golden Bone is the Direwolf route, so craft it first if you want that one.
Step two: craft the Kindred Charm
The Kindred Charm is the item to make next. Sneak and use it on your tamed spirit to bond with it. It can also bring a fallen companion back.[2]

Crafting it also earns you an advancement.
Bond grows by one point a second while your companion is out with an active owner. It stops growing after 120 seconds without you moving or looking around, so don't leave it idling. A revive makes the charm rest for 300 seconds, and the companion loses half its progress towards the next level.[3]
Step three: keep it healthy
Spirit Bandage restores 6 health to a companion, and one craft gives you two bandages. Keep a few on you before you take your companion into a fight.[3][4]

What this pack changed
The pack makes early companions friendlier than the mod's defaults. Here is what changed:[3]
- Feeding gives 10 experience instead of 4 (progression.experience_per_feed).[3]
- Your companion receives 0.75 of the experience you earn instead of 0.5 (progression.xp_share).[3]
- A companion starts with 9 storage slots at zero bond instead of 3 (progression.storage_base_slots).[3]
- Each level adds 2 max health instead of 1, and 0.2 armour instead of 0.1, before the species growth multiplier (progression.health_per_level and progression.armour_per_level).[3]
- Level 2 needs 90 experience instead of 93 (progression.base_experience).[3]
- The wait between bond feeds is 500 seconds instead of 600 (bond.bond_feed_cooldown_seconds).[3]
How does Kindred Spirits work?
7 parts
The systems the sources describe for Kindred Spirits revolve around spirit companions rather than machines or power networks: you tame them, bond with them, level them up, gear them out and let their abilities work for you. This section walks through that loop the way the pack sets it up.[2][3]
Taming
Each wild species has its own taming item, and one of those items tames a wild companion with a chance set by taming.taming_chance, which is 0.33 in this pack (the same as the mod default). Several species also need a special setup before they appear, as the advancement descriptions explain.[2][3]
- Baby Dragon: Dragon Breath is the taming item. The advancement says to let lava flow against a dragon egg and tame the Baby Dragon that hatches.[2][5]
- Direwolf: use a Golden Bone on a wolf to call out the Direwolf in it.[2][6]
- Gremlin: cooked chicken is the taming item. The advancement says to feed a rabbit a carrot, then cooked chicken after midnight.[2][7]
- Mini Player: a golden carrot is the taming item, and the advancement points to a Mini Player from a wandering trader's spawn egg.[2][8]
- Nightfox: sculk is the taming item. Use it on a fox and tame the Nightfox it becomes.[2][9]
- Quokka: short grass, fern or tall grass count as its taming items. Quokkas spawn in jungle biomes in groups of 1 to 3.[10][11][12]
- T-Rex: cooked beef is the taming item. You get the egg by brushing suspicious sand, and the pack leaves worldgen.beach_suspicious_sand on, so the odd block is scattered into beach sand as new chunks generate.[3][13][14][15]
The pack also runs a script for starter spirits. When a Nightfox, Direwolf or Quokka spawns carrying the ftb_starter_spirit tag, one tick later the script tames it to the nearest player in range.[16]
Bond
Bond is the long-term relationship. Sneak and use a Kindred Charm on your tamed spirit to start it. A companion earns one bond point a second while it is out with an active owner, and level 1 costs bond.bond_base_cost points, which is 760. Each further level multiplies that cost by bond.bond_growth (1.06), up to bond.bond_max_level (30).[2][3]
Bond stops growing after bond.afk_seconds (120) seconds without the owner moving or looking around. Feeding the species' taming item also grants bond: bond.bond_feed_fraction (0.05) of the points already earned. The pack shortened the cooldown between those feeds to 500 seconds, down from the mod default of 600 (bond.bond_feed_cooldown_seconds).[3]
Reaching bond level 5 unlocks your companion's special ability. If your companion dies while above bond level 10 (bond.bond_death_floor), it loses a bond level.[2][3]
Levels, stars and experience
Experience works separately from bond. Going from level 1 to level 2 takes progression.base_experience (90 in this pack, mod default 93), and each level adds half that amount again. Feeding a companion grants progression.experience_per_feed (10, up from the default 4), and the bonded companion also receives progression.xp_share (0.75, up from 0.5) of the experience you earn.[3]
The level cap is progression.max_level (30). At max level you can prestige your companion for stars, up to progression.max_stars (5). Each star adds a fraction to per-level stat growth (progression.star_growth_bonus, 0.1).[2][3]
Two systems shape how fast experience comes in. Rested experience builds after five minutes without a gain, doubles gains until it is spent and stores up to 1,200. Saturation is the opposite: once recent companion experience passes 200, gains drop to half rate, and at 500 they drop to a tenth. It decays by one point a second, and moving 3 chunks from where it started clears it.[3]
Every level adds stats on top of the species base, and the species growth multiplier scales the health and attack gains. The pack doubled the health and armour gains from the mod defaults.[3][17]
- Max health per level: 2 (progression.health_per_level), mod default 1.[3]
- Armour per level: 0.2 (progression.armour_per_level), mod default 0.1.[3]
- Attack per level: 0.25 (progression.attack_per_level), unchanged from the mod default.[3]
- Movement speed per level: 0.002 (progression.speed_per_level), unchanged from the mod default.[3]
Species base stats
These are the level 1 values from the startup config. The pack leaves all of them at the mod defaults.[17]
- Baby Dragon: 25 health, 7 attack, 2 armour, growth multiplier 1.5.[17]
- Direwolf: 45 health, 5 attack, 4 armour, growth multiplier 1.[17]
- Gremlin: 25 health, 2 attack, 2 armour, growth multiplier 1.5.[17]
- Mini Player: 45 health, 4 attack, 2 armour, growth multiplier 0.5.[17]
- Nightfox: 35 health, 3 attack, 2 armour, growth multiplier 1.[17]
- Quokka: 45 health, 2 attack, 6 armour, growth multiplier 0.5.[17]
- T-Rex: 75 health, 4 attack, 2 armour, growth multiplier 1, with 0.9 knockback resistance and a slow 0.25 movement speed.[17]
Storage and healing
Open your companion's storage by using it with an empty hand. It grants progression.storage_base_slots slots at zero bond (9 in this pack, up from the default 3), and the rest unlock as bond grows, up to the species maximum.[2][3]
To heal a hurt companion, give it an item from the companion healing tag: a golden apple or a Spirit Bandage. An item from that tag restores progression.healing_per_item (10) health, while the bandage restores progression.bandage_healing (6).[3][18]

Charm, revival and gear
The Kindred Charm also brings a fallen companion back. After a revive the charm must rest for charm.revive_cooldown_seconds (300) seconds, and the companion loses half of its progress towards the next level (charm.revive_experience_penalty).[2][3]

Each species has its own gear. The charm screen lets you take it off again.[2]
- Gremlin: Battery. Every second there is a one in ten chance it pushes a nearby machine eight ticks further along, and the jolt deals 2 lightning damage to every hostile within 3 blocks.[2][19]
- T-Rex: Boxing Gloves. They give three blocks more reach and two more damage.[2][20]
- Baby Dragon: Dragon Tablet. Its breath attack becomes a falling meteor, and the dragon occasionally wanders off for half a minute.[2][21]
- Nightfox: Running Shoes. They make it much faster and make Swift Step twice as strong.[2][22]
- Quokka: Quokka Snack. It charms nearby monsters into fighting each other.[2][23]
- Direwolf: wolf armor. Mini Player: chest armor.[24][25]

Abilities
Abilities unlock at bond level 5. abilities.abilities_enabled is true in this pack, and turning it off leaves companions as cosmetic pets.[2][3]
Two abilities have config options. The T-Rex's Crushing Might crushes raw ore and ore items within 5 blocks every 5 seconds, when a mod makes a matching dust. Each one gives 3 dusts (abilities.crushing_might_dust).[2][3]
The Mini Player's Helping Hand slips you a second copy of something you craft. abilities.helping_hand_recipe_blacklist is empty in this pack, so no recipe ids are excluded. abilities.helping_hand_reverse_depth is 4: it follows that many recipe steps looking for a way back to what went into the item, and any recipe chain that leads back is never copied.[2][3]
charm.allow_skin_choice and charm.mimic_owner_weapon are both on. The first lets you name the player skin a Mini Player wears, and the second lets a companion that carries weapons copy the one you are holding.[3]
How do you progress through Kindred Spirits?
3 parts
The sources for this pack don't show a tier ladder for Kindred Spirits. What they do show is how you get your first companion, which items you can craft, and where eggs and digging loot come from, so that is what this section covers.[4][16]
Starter spirits
This pack ships a script that can hand you a companion for free. When a nightfox, a direwolf or a quokka spawns carrying the ftb_starter_spirit tag, the script waits 1 tick and then adopts it to the nearest player. That player must be within a squared distance of 64 of the spirit. If nobody is in range, or the spirit is no longer alive, nothing happens.[16]

Kindred Spirits has mod recipes in this pack that make the Battery, Quokka Snack, Boxing Gloves, Spirit Bandage, Dragon Tablet, Golden Bone, Kindred Charm and Running Shoes. The exact recipe for each one is shown below.[4]

Eggs and digging loot
The mod's T-Rex egg turns up through archaeology. Its archaeology loot table gives T-Rex Egg at weight 1 against an empty result at weight 7. Once you place the egg, breaking it drops the egg item again.[15][26]
The mod's beach sand archaeology table just rolls the vanilla desert well table once, so brushing that sand gives normal desert well loot.[27]
Direwolves can dig up gifts. The direwolf dig loot table has plain results with these weights: bone 8, flint 5, wheat seeds 4 and beetroot seeds 2. On sand it can also pull from the vanilla desert pyramid, desert well and warm ocean ruin archaeology tables (weights 3, 3 and 2). On gravel it can pull from the cold ocean ruin table (weight 2) and the common and rare trail ruins tables (weights 6 and 1).[28]
Which Kindred Spirits config options matter?
3 parts
Every value this pack changes for Kindred Spirits is in the common config. The changes lean toward faster levelling, sturdier companions and more storage from the start. The startup and client configs are left at the mod defaults.[3][17][36]
What the pack changed
- progression.experience_per_feed is 10 here (mod default 4). This is the experience a companion gets each time you feed it.[3]
- progression.xp_share is 0.75 (mod default 0.5). It is the share of the experience you earn that your bonded companion also receives.[3]
- progression.base_experience is 90 (mod default 93). That is the experience needed to go from level 1 to level 2, and each level adds half this again.[3]
- progression.health_per_level is 2 (mod default 1) and progression.armour_per_level is 0.2 (mod default 0.1). Both are applied before the species growth multiplier.[3]
- progression.storage_base_slots is 9 (mod default 3). That is how many storage slots a companion grants at zero bond. The rest unlock as bond grows, up to the species maximum.[3]
- bond.bond_feed_cooldown_seconds is 500 (mod default 600). That is the wait in seconds between feeds of the species' taming item for bond.[3]
Left at the mod default
The level caps are untouched: progression.max_level and bond.bond_max_level are both 30. taming.taming_chance is 0.33, so each taming item has that chance to tame a wild companion.[3]
Reviving is also stock. charm.revive_cooldown_seconds is 300 and charm.revive_experience_penalty is 0.5, which is the fraction of progress towards the next level that a revived companion loses.[3]
The per-level attack and speed gains, progression.attack_per_level (0.25) and progression.speed_per_level (0.002), are also at the mod default. The species stats in the startup config match the mod defaults too. A T-Rex, for example, starts with species.trex.max_health set to 75.[3][17]
Toggles worth knowing
- abilities.abilities_enabled is true. Turn it off and companions become cosmetic pets.[3]
- charm.allow_skin_choice is true, so players can name the skin a Mini Player wears. Turn it off and every Mini Player wears its owner's skin.[3]
- charm.mimic_owner_weapon is true, so a companion that carries weapons can copy the one you are holding.[3]
- display.show_level_in_name is true and adds the companion's level to its name plate.[36]
- display.resolve_companion_skins is true and looks up real player skins. Turn it off to dress every Mini Player in a default skin.[36]
