What is Functional Storage?

Functional Storage is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 26.1.2-1.6.2 of it (the file functionalstorage-26.1.2-1.6.2.jar).[1]

It has been in the pack since version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

4 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers. The recipes for the controller, the tools and several upgrades in this pack take any drawer as an ingredient, so your first steps are simple: make a drawer, then add the tools and upgrades that make drawers easier to use.[2]

Make some drawers

Start with the wooden drawers. They come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, and each size has its own recipe. For Oak that gives you Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2). The 1x2 recipe makes 2 drawers and the 2x2 recipe makes 4.[2][3]

Other woods have their own versions, such as Birch Drawer (1x1), Cherry Drawer (1x1) and Spruce Drawer (1x1). Pick whatever looks best in your base.[2][3]

Tip: Make a drawer or two before anything else. The recipes for the Storage Controller, the Linking Tool, the Configuration Tool and several upgrades are listed as taking any drawer from the drawer tag, so any drawer type will do.[2]

Add a Storage Controller

Once you have some drawers, craft a Storage Controller. The Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) is a related block with its own recipe.[2][3]

Get the tools

The Linking Tool has two modes: one links a drawer to a controller, and the other links multiple drawers between 2 points. The Configuration Tool is the other tool you can craft.[2][3]

The mod's screen text says: Right Click while Crouching to open the GUI.[3]

Upgrades

The pack has Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. The Netherite Upgrade is made at a smithing table, not a crafting grid. Going the other way, the Iron Downgrade downgrades the slots to a max of 64 items.[2][3]

Later you can look at the utility upgrades, like the Puller Upgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Collector Upgrade and Void Upgrade, and at specialised drawers such as the Fluid Drawer (1x1), Compacting Drawer and Ender Drawer. All of these have recipes in the pack.[2][3]

How does Functional Storage work?

5 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers. Every wooden drawer comes in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, so you pick how many separate slots you want in one block. Framed and fluid drawers come in the same layouts.[3][4][5][6]

Drawer types

The wooden drawers exist for oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, warped, mangrove, cherry and pale oak, for example Birch Drawer (1x2) or Cherry Drawer (2x2). The Framed Drawers, such as Framed Drawer (1x1), sit in the same item groups. Fluid drawers have their own 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 blocks and are not part of the general drawer tag that the wooden and framed drawers share.[3][4][5][6][7]

To open a drawer's GUI you right click while crouching. The GUI has Storage and Utility sections, and it uses labels such as Slot, Item, Amount and Priority.[3]

Fluid drawers

Fluid drawers show hints in their interface for emptying a container into the drawer and for filling a container from the drawer. That is how you move fluids in and out by hand. The mod's own fluid drawer denylist tag is empty, so the mod itself does not block any fluid from being stored.[3][8]

Controllers and linking

The mod has a Storage Controller and a Framed Storage Controller, plus a Controller Access Point and a Framed Controller Access Point. The Linking Tool connects drawers to a controller. Its single mode links one drawer to a controller, and its multiple mode links multiple drawers between 2 points.[3]

Upgrades

Storage upgrades describe themselves in one of these ways: they increase a base value, decrease it, or set it to a fixed value. The mod has Copper Upgrade, Netherite Upgrade, a Gold Upgrade and a Diamond Upgrade. The Iron Downgrade goes the other way and limits the slots to a maximum of 64 items.[3]

Items that have a Direction or Slot setting are adjusted by right clicking them in a GUI. The mod also has a Redstone Upgrade, a Void Upgrade and a Water Generator Upgrade. Upgrades that generate a fluid describe themselves as generating an amount in mb of that fluid.[3]

    Other storage blocks

The Compacting Drawer, the Simple Compacting Drawer and their framed versions are separate blocks, and the pack has crafting recipes for several of them. The Ender Drawer and the Configuration Tool also have their own recipes.[2][3]

The Armory Cabinet has an insertable tag that covers swords, axes, hoes, pickaxes, shovels, and head, chest, leg and foot armor. It also covers bows, crossbows, tridents and maces, plus the elytra, shield, fishing rod, flint and steel, shears, brush and enchanted books.[3][9]

The mod's own item denylist for drawer storage is empty too, so the mod itself does not exclude any item from drawers.[10]

Unverified Drawer capacities and the exact amounts each upgrade adds are not shown in the sources here. There are no config files and no in-jar guidebook for this mod in the pack, so check the numbers in game.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

    4 parts

What the pack's recipes show for Functional Storage is a clear order of parts: you craft a basic drawer first, and many of the other pieces then use a drawer as an ingredient.[2]

    Drawers

Drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes. In this pack the 1x2 recipe makes 2 drawers and the 2x2 recipe makes 4, while the 1x1 recipe makes a single drawer. Oak uses recipes named as alternates, so check these.[2]

The same sizes exist for acacia, birch, cherry, crimson, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, pale oak, spruce and warped wood, each with its own recipe. Fluid drawers also come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2, for example Fluid Drawer (1x1).[2]

    Framed drawers

Framed drawers (Framed Drawer (1x1), Framed Drawer (1x2) and Framed Drawer (2x2)) have their own crafting recipes, and there are framed fluid versions too. The pack also has "from simple" recipes for them, shown below.[2]

    Pieces built from a drawer

A long list of recipes takes a drawer from the mod's drawer tag as an input. These include the Storage Controller, the Controller Access Point, the Ender Drawer, the Configuration Tool and the Linking Tool. The framed controller parts use one too.[2]
