What is FTB Backups 3?

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

FTB Backups 3 is part of this pack's mod list. The pack ships version 21.1.5, and the file is ftb-backups-3-21.1.5.jar.[1]

The pack data shows the mod was already included in this pack version or an earlier one, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what the mod does, which settings it has, or how it behaves in this pack, so I'm not guessing about any of that. No quests in this pack involve the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it has no place in the pack's progression. The pack's mod list is the only source for this section.

How do you get started with FTB Backups 3?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Good news: FTB Backups 3 is a set-it-and-forget-it mod, so there's nothing to craft first. Your first steps are all about choosing sensible backup settings before you start building your base.[2]

Unverified No recipes, items or quests tied to this mod were found for this pack, so there is no crafting order to follow and no recipe blocks in this section.

Your first steps, in order

  1. Open the mod's settings from the sidebar button, which is described as the settings for the FTB Backups 3 mod. Everything below is adjusted there.[2]
  2. Decide on automatic backups. When Automatic Backups is true, backups run based on the Backup Timer setting, which is a frequency in minutes.[2]
  3. Choose how much history to keep. Backups to Keep sets how many backups are stored, and the oldest is deleted when a backup runs. Max Total Size caps the total size of all backups, accepts the suffixes KB, MB, GB and TB, and also deletes the oldest backups to stay under the limit.[2]
  4. Check where backups go. If the folder setting is empty, they land in the ftbbackups3 folder in your game instance. You can set an absolute path instead, and on Windows you may need double backslashes.[2]
  5. Pick how chatty it is. Run Silently stops players being notified when a backup runs, and Notify Admins Only limits on-screen progress to admin-level players and single-player server owners. If Run Silently is off, you can also show the backed-up file size to players.[2]
  6. Learn where to restore from. The mod has a restore screen for backups created by FTB Backups 3, so you know where to go if a world goes sideways.[2]

Handy extras

  • If you want to back up more than the world folder, use the extra files option. By default only the world folder is backed up, and extras must be inside the game instance.[2]
  • To skip files, use the excluded files option. It supports both globs and regexes, written as glob:<file-glob> or regex:<regular-expression>.[2]
  • Compression level runs from 1 (minimum) to 9 (maximum), and 0 means no compression at all.[2]
  • On a server, you can make backups run only when at least one player is online. You can also force a backup when the server stops, as long as automatic backups are on.[2]
  • The command is /ftbbackups3, and there's an option to register /backups as an alias for it.[2]
Watch out: Leave the buffer size under the advanced settings alone unless you understand the implications. The mod itself warns against adjusting it.[2]

Unverified The default values for these settings in this pack (timer length, number of backups kept, size limit) could not be confirmed, so check them in the settings screen yourself.

How does FTB Backups 3 work?

6 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

FTB Backups 3 doesn't add machines, multiblocks or anything that uses power, fluids or items. The sources describe it as a backup tool for your world, driven by settings, with a restore screen and a command. So there's nothing to automate here, and this section explains how the backup system behaves.[2]

When backups run

  • Automatic backups run on a timer. The backup timer is the frequency in minutes, and it only matters while automatic backups are turned on.[2]
  • There's an option to always run a backup when the server is being stopped. It only applies if automatic backups are on.[2]
  • Another option makes automated backups run only when at least one player is online. That's handy if you don't want identical backups piling up while nobody is playing.[2]
  • The mod registers a /ftbbackups3 command. An option can also add /backups as a shorter alias.[2]

What gets backed up and where it goes

By default, only the files in the world folder are backed up. That folder is called "world" on a dedicated server and "saves/<worldname>" on a single-player instance. You can add extra files from outside the world folder, as long as they're still inside the game instance.[2]

You can also exclude files from the archive. Both file globs and regular expressions work, using the prefixes glob: or regex: in front of the pattern.[2]

If you leave the backup folder setting empty, backups go into a folder called "ftbbackups3" in your game instance. If you give it an absolute path, they're written there instead. On Windows you may need double backslashes in that path.[2]

How the archive is created

An archival plugin does the actual writing to disk. The built-in options create ZIP files or flat file copies.[2]

Compression level runs from 1 (minimum) to 9 (maximum), and 0 means no compression at all. There's also an advanced buffer size for reading the files being backed up. The mod itself warns you not to change it unless you understand the implications.[2]

Keeping disk usage under control

  • The number of backups to keep is configurable. When a backup runs, the oldest one is deleted.[2]
  • A maximum total size can also be set, using the suffixes KB, MB, GB or TB. The oldest backups are deleted to keep the total under that amount.[2]

Notifications

Online players are told when a backup runs, unless the silent option is on. You can limit the on-screen progress messages to admin-level players (and the owner on a single-player server). With silent off, you can also show the backed-up file size to players.[2]

Restoring

The mod has a restore screen for backups created by FTB Backups 3. It also adds a settings button to the sidebar.[2]

Unverified The pack's actual values for these settings (timer, backups to keep, size limit, compression level and so on) aren't confirmed, because no config files for this mod were available. Check the in-game settings before relying on any default.

Which FTB Backups 3 config options matter?

4 parts

Good news: every option in the FTB Backups 3 server config is set in this pack to the same value as the mod default. The pack changed nothing here, so what you see below is also what the mod ships with. These are the options worth knowing about.[3]

When backups happen

  • auto is true, so backups run automatically.[3]
  • backup_timer is 120. It is measured in minutes and accepts values from 1 to 43,800.[3]
  • only_if_players_online is true. A backup is only made when at least one player is online, or has been online since the last backup.[3]
  • force_on_shutdown is false, so stopping the server does not trigger an extra backup.[3]

How many backups and how much space

  • backups_to_keep is 12. Setting it to 0 keeps an infinite number, and more backups means more space used.[3]
  • max_total_size is "50 GB". Once the backups folder passes that, older backups are deleted to make room for newer ones.[3]
  • archival_plugin is "ftbbackups3:zip", which creates a ZIP file. The other built-in method is a simple recursive file copy with no compression, and other mods may add more plugins.[3]
  • compression_level is 5, on a scale from 0 (no compression) to 9 (full compression). Higher values typically take longer but use less disk space, and the effect depends on the archival plugin in use.[3]
Tip: If disk space is tight, lower backups_to_keep or max_total_size. Both cap how much the backups folder can grow.[3]

Where backups go and what they include

  • folder is an empty string, which means the folder named "ftbackups3" inside the game instance folder is used. You can set an absolute path instead.[3]
  • extra_files is empty. Anything you add is backed up on top of the world folder, and it must be within the game instance.[3]
  • excluded_files lists the patterns "glob:*.neoforge-tmp" and "glob:session.lock".[3]

Messages and commands

  • silent is false, so backup messages show in chat and the status bar.[3]
  • display_file_size is true. When a backup finishes, all online players get a "(current size | total size)" message.[3]
  • notify_admins_only is false. If you set it to true, only players with permission level 2 or higher (or the owner of a singleplayer integrated server) see the on-screen progress.[3]
  • add_backup_command_alias is true, so /backup works as an alias for /ftbbackups3 backup.[3]
  • advanced.buffer_size is 4096, the buffer size for reading and writing files. It accepts 256 to 65,536, and most people never need to touch it.[3]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as ftbbackups3, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
