What is flying unicorns?

1 part

flying unicorns adds winged unicorns you can find in the wild, tame, ride and fly. This pack ships it as version 1.0.1, in the file simply-winged-1.0.1.jar.[1][2]

Watch out: The mod's project page describes a newer release than the one in this pack. It says players updating directly from 1.0.1 have their existing winged horses converted into unicorns, so some details below may differ in the pack's 1.0.1 build.[1][2]

What the mod does, per its project page

  • Natural herds: you can discover herds with both adults and foals, in 32 different color variants.[1]
  • Riding and flight: tame a unicorn and equip it with a saddle to travel over land and through the air, with direct control over forward movement, ascent and descent.[1]
  • Flight stamina: flying uses stamina, which recovers while the unicorn rests on the ground or when you feed it golden foods. When stamina runs out, the unicorn starts descending.[1]
  • Summoning horn: harvest a fully grown horn from an adult unicorn with shears, then use it to craft a summoning horn. The horn is bonded to the unicorn it came from, and the unicorn's horn gradually grows back.[1]
  • Calling your mount: the summoning horn makes your bonded unicorn fly toward you and land nearby, even from a long distance or another dimension.[1]
  • Optional command: /unicorn habitat teleports you to the nearest wild unicorn herd.[1]

The default flight controls are W while holding Space to run forward and take off, W to move forward in the air, Space to ascend and S to descend.[1]

Unverified The sources here do not show where this pack's quest book places the mod (its chapter, group, or the quests before and after it), nor whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the pack's quest book for that.

How do you get started with flying unicorns?

1 part

Welcome to flying unicorns! This mod adds winged unicorns that you find in the wild, tame, ride and fly. Here is the order I would do things in, so you end up with a mount that comes when you call it.[1]

Step by step

  1. Find a wild herd. Herds contain adults and foals, and come in 32 different color variants. The mod's page says unicorns are much easier to find than they used to be. If you are struggling, the optional command /unicorn habitat instantly locates and teleports you to the nearest wild herd.[1]
  2. Tame a unicorn and equip it with a saddle. The saddle is what lets you ride and fly it.[1]
  3. Take off. Hold W and Space together to run forward and take off. Then use W to move forward while flying, Space to ascend and S to descend.[1]
  4. Watch your stamina. Flying uses it up, and it recovers while the unicorn rests on the ground or when you feed it golden foods. When stamina runs out, the unicorn starts descending, so land before that happens.[1]
  5. Harvest a fully grown horn from an adult unicorn using shears. You need this for the summoning horn.[1]
  6. Craft the summoning horn from the harvested horn. It becomes bonded to the unicorn it came from, and you can use it to call that unicorn from long distances or even from another dimension. The unicorn flies toward you and lands nearby.[1]
Tip: Taking the horn does not cost you the unicorn's horn for good, because it gradually grows back over time.[1]

Unverified The exact crafting recipe for the summoning horn is not shown in the sources used for this guide, so I can't give you its ingredients here. The mod's page says the mod works with recipe viewers such as Just Enough Items, so check the recipe in game.

How does flying unicorns work?

5 parts

flying unicorns is a creature mod, so there are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems to wire up here. The mechanics are about finding a unicorn, taming it, riding it, keeping its flight stamina up, and calling it back with a bonded horn. The sources here describe the mod itself and do not show any pack-specific changes to it.[1]

Finding unicorns

Winged unicorns spawn in the wild as herds that contain both adults and foals, with 32 different color variants. The mod's notes say unicorns are now much easier to find than when they were extremely rare.[1]

If you don't want to wander around searching, there is an optional command: /unicorn habitat instantly locates the nearest wild unicorn herd and teleports you to it.[1]

Riding and flying

Tame a unicorn and equip it with a saddle, and you can travel over land and through the sky. You get direct control over forward movement, ascent and descent. These are the default controls:[1]

  • W + hold Space: run forward and take off.[1]
  • W: move forward while flying.[1]
  • Space: ascend.[1]
  • S: descend.[1]

Flight stamina

Flying uses up stamina. It recovers while the unicorn rests on the ground, or when you feed it golden foods. When the stamina runs out, the unicorn starts descending, so keep an eye on it before you cross big gaps.[1]

Tip: Carry golden foods on long flights. Feeding them to your unicorn is one of the two ways to get stamina back.[1]

The summoning horn

The summoning horn lets you call your bonded unicorn from long distances, or even from another dimension. The unicorn flies toward you and lands nearby.[1]

To get one, harvest a fully grown horn from an adult unicorn using shears, then use it to craft the summoning horn. The crafted horn is bonded to the unicorn it came from. The unicorn's horn gradually grows back over time, so harvesting does not use the animal up.[1]

Unverified The mod's project page says the summoning horn is crafted from a recipe, but the sources here do not show that recipe as it exists in this pack. Check it in the recipe viewer in game, since the mod has full Just Enough Items (JEI) compatibility. This site does hold FTB Evolution 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Upgrading from older versions

Watch out: If you update directly from version 1.0.1 of the mod, your existing winged horses are automatically converted into unicorns.[1]

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as in2bubble_simply_winged, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
