What is Chunky?

2 parts

Chunky pre-generates chunks for you, quickly and efficiently. Instead of waiting for the world to generate as you explore, you tell it which area to build ahead of time and let it work through the job.[1]

This pack includes Chunky 1.5.4 (the NeoForge build). It was already in the pack by FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]

What it can do

  • Run one or several chunk generation tasks at the same time, which helps if you want to make more use of your CPU.[1]
  • Pause a task and save it for later, then pick it up again.[1]
  • Show detailed progress, including chunks processed, percent to completion, ETA and chunk processing rate.[1]
  • Generate custom world shapes, not just squares.[1]

Basic commands

  • chunky radius <radius> sets the current radius, and chunky start begins a new task from the current selection.[1]
  • chunky pause saves your progress, chunky continue resumes, and chunky cancel stops the task and throws the progress away.[1]
  • chunky world sets the currently selected world, chunky shape sets the shape to generate, chunky center sets the current center block location, chunky spawn sets the center to the spawn point, and chunky worldborder matches the center and radius to the world border in the selected world.[1]
  • chunky progress shows how every task is doing in game.[1]
Tip: To use Chunky you need to be in a singleplayer world, or be an operator on a dedicated server. In older versions of Chunky you may also need cheats enabled for the world.[1]

A simple first run is to set a radius of 1000 and then start the task. That generates a square centered at 0,0 in the overworld with a 1000 block radius.[1]

How do you get started with Chunky?

5 parts

Chunky pre-generates chunks for you, quickly and efficiently, so your world is already built before you fly or walk into it. There is nothing to craft to get started. You just run a few commands.[1]

Permissions first

To use Chunky you need to be in a singleplayer world, or be an operator on a dedicated server. On a server, someone with console access has to run the op command with your username. In older versions of Chunky you may also need cheats enabled, which you can do at world creation or with the Open to LAN button.[1]

Your first pre-generation

The simplest run is a square centered at 0,0 in the overworld. Here is the order to do it in:[1]

  1. Run chunky radius 1000 to set the radius. The mod's own example uses a 1000 block radius around 0,0.[1]
  2. Run chunky start to start a new chunk generation task from whatever the selection currently is.[1]
  3. Run chunky progress at any time to see pre-generation progress in-game for all tasks.[1]

Choosing what to generate

Before you start, you can shape the selection. Use chunky world to pick the world, chunky shape to set the shape, chunky center to set the center block, and chunky spawn to center on the spawn point. You can also use chunky corners to select by corner coordinates, and chunky selection to check what you have picked.[1]

If you want to match a world border, set the border first, then run chunky worldborder. It copies the border's center and radius into your selection.[1]

Pausing and stopping

  • chunky pause pauses the chunk generation tasks that are currently running and saves progress.[1]
  • chunky continue continues running the current or saved chunk generation tasks.[1]
  • chunky cancel stops the chunk generation tasks that are currently running and cancels their progress.[1]
Tip: You can run several generation tasks at once if you want to put more of your CPU to work.[1]

What the pack sets

The pack ships Chunky's config with silent set to false, updateInterval set to 1, continueOnRestart set to false and forceLoadExistingChunks set to false. The language is language = "en".[3]

The chunky silent command toggles displaying update messages, and chunky reload reloads the configuration.[1]

How does Chunky work?

7 parts

Chunky is described on its project page as a tool that pre-generates chunks quickly, efficiently and safely, so exploring doesn't have to generate terrain on the fly. The page documents it as a set of chunky commands.[1]

Who can use it

The project page says that on a dedicated server you need to be an operator. Someone with server access has to run the command op followed by your username from the server console. In a singleplayer world you can use it directly, though the page notes that in older versions of the mod you may also need cheats enabled, either at world creation or through the Open to LAN button.[1]

How a generation task works

According to the project page, you first describe what to generate (the selection), then start a task from that selection. You can start one task or several at once if you want to put more of your CPU to work. The mod is described as showing detailed information such as chunks processed, percent to completion, ETA and chunk processing rate.[1]

Task commands

  • chunky start: listed on the project page as starting a new chunk generation task from the current selection.[1]
  • chunky pause: listed as pausing the current chunk generation tasks and saving progress, so you can come back to them later.[1]
  • chunky continue: listed as continuing current or saved chunk generation tasks.[1]
  • chunky cancel: listed as stopping the current chunk generation tasks and cancelling their progress.[1]
  • chunky progress: listed as displaying pre-generation progress in-game for all tasks.[1]

Building a selection

  • chunky world [world]: sets the currently selected world.[1]
  • chunky shape <shape>: listed as setting the shape to generate. The project page also mentions custom world shapes.[1]
  • chunky center [<x> <z>]: listed as setting the current center block location.[1]
  • chunky radius <radius>: listed as setting the current radius.[1]
  • chunky spawn: listed as setting the center to the spawn point.[1]
  • chunky worldborder: listed as setting the center and radius to match the world border in the selected world.[1]
  • chunky corners <x1> <z1> <x2> <z2>: listed as setting the selection by corner coordinates.[1]
  • chunky pattern <pattern>: listed as setting the preferred generation pattern.[1]
  • chunky selection: listed as displaying the current selection, which is handy to check before you start.[1]

Example workflows

The project page's example for a square centered at 0,0 in the overworld with a 1000 block radius is to run chunky radius 1000 and then chunky start.[1]

Its example for a circle centered at spawn in the nether with a 1000 block radius is to run chunky world the_nether, chunky shape circle, chunky spawn, chunky radius 1000 and then chunky start.[1]

Its example for generating inside a world border centered at 0,0 with a 10000 block radius is to run worldborder center 0 0, then worldborder set 20000, then chunky worldborder and chunky start.[1]

Miscellaneous commands

  • chunky silent: listed as toggling the display of update messages.[1]
  • chunky quiet <interval>: listed as setting the quiet interval in seconds for update messages.[1]
  • chunky reload: listed as reloading the configuration.[1]
  • chunky trim: listed as deleting chunks outside the selection.[1]
Watch out: The project page lists chunky trim as deleting chunks outside the selection. Check what your selection is with chunky selection before you run it.[1]

Config values in this pack

The pack ships the config file with these values. The sources here don't describe what each key does, so treat this list as what is set rather than an explanation.[3]

Which Chunky config options matter?

1 part

Chunky keeps its settings in one small file, config/chunky/config.json. Here is exactly how this pack sets each entry.[3]

The sources here do not show which of these values differ from the mod's own defaults, so I won't claim the pack changed any of them.[3]

Using Chunky day to day

Most of what you do with Chunky happens through commands rather than the config. You start a task with chunky start, pause it and save progress with chunky pause, resume current or saved tasks with chunky continue, and stop and discard progress with chunky cancel.[1]

To pick the area, you can use chunky world, chunky shape, chunky center and chunky radius. You can also use chunky worldborder to match the selection to the world border.[1]

Tip: You need to be an operator on a dedicated server, or be in a singleplayer world, to run Chunky commands. On older versions of Chunky you may also need cheats enabled.[1]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as chunky, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
